Enteric fever is a multisystem febrile illness caused by Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Typhi, Paratyphi A, B and C. It is usually transmitted through contaminated food and water. The disease usually manifests as a febrile illness with bacteraemia after the initial entry through the gastrointestinal tract. However, extraintestinal seeding of this pathogen can occur in rare instances. Here, we report a case of chocolate cysts of the ovaries which was infected with Salmonella Paratyphi A in a sexually active woman with a previous history of enteric fever that was neglected. We r

Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis was employed to measure chromosomal genotypic diversity and evolutionary relationships among 761 isolates of the serovars Salmonella typhi, S. paratyphi A, S. paratyphi B, S. paratyphi C, and S. sendai, which are human-adapted agents of enteric fever, and S. miami and S. java, which are serotypically similar to S. sendai and S. paratyphi B, respectively, but cause gastroenteritis in both humans and animals. To determine the phylogenetic positions of the clones of these forms within the context of the salmonellae of subspecies I, comparative data for 22 other c

Enteric fever is a major public health concern in endemic areas, particularly in infrastructure-limited countries where Salmonella Paratyphi A has emerged in increasing proportion of cases. We aimed to evaluate a method to detect Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) and Salmonella Paratyphi A (S. Paratyphi A) in febrile patients in Bangladesh. We conducted a prospective study enrolling patients with fever > 38°C admitted to two large urban hospitals and two outpatient clinics located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We developed and evaluated a method combining short culture with a new molecular assay to simultan

Introduction. Enteric fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi (typhoid fever) or S. enterica serotype Paratyphi A, B or C (paratyphoid fever), is a major health problem in developing countries. Vertical transmission of Salmonella can cause miscarriage, still birth, preterm labour and neonatal sepsis. In the literature, many cases of vertical transmission of S. enterica Typhi from mother to foetus have been reported, but there are very limited studies showing vertical transmission of S. enterica Paratyphi. Case presentation. Here, we report a rare case of S. enterica serotype Paraty

We describe a case of a 69-year-old woman, a known case of compensated Hepatitis C cirrhosis, presenting with recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) secondary to Salmonella Paratyphi B. She had recently tested positive for Salmonella Paratyphi bacteremia associated with UTI, managed with antibiotics. Two weeks later, she presented with fever and burning micturition with signs of abdominal distension and pedal edema suggestive of decompensation of cirrhosis. She had repeat positive urine cultures for Salmonella and was managed with broad-spectrum antibiotics, surgical stone removal, and suppor

Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A (S. Paratyphi A) is a pathogen that can cause enteric fever. According to the recent epidemic trends of typhoid fever, S. Paratyphi A has been the major important causative factor in paratyphoid fever. An effective vaccine for S. Paratyphi A has not been developed, which made it a tricky public health concern. Until now, how S. Paratyphi A interacts with organisms remain unknown. Here using lifespan assay, we found that S. Paratyphi A could infect Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) at 25°C, and attenuate thermotolerance. The immune response of C. elegan

Salmonella enterica infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Asian continent, and are increasingly associated with antimicrobial resistance. Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A, B, and C cause enteric fever, while non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars (usually Typhimurium and Enteritidis) cause mainly gastroenteritis which can lead to systemic infections. Vaccines are only licensed against S. Typhi, but different combinations are in clinical development to prevent S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi A or S. Typhi and non-ty

Human infection with typhoidal Salmonella serovars causes a febrile systemic disease, termed enteric fever. Here we establish that in response to a temperature equivalent to fever (39 °C-42 °C) Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi, Paratyphi A, and Sendai significantly attenuate their motility, epithelial cell invasion, and uptake by macrophages. Under these feverlike conditions, the residual epithelial cell invasion of S. Paratyphi A occurs in a type III secretion system (T3SS) 1-independent manner and results in restrained disruption of epithelium integrity. The impaired motility and invasion

Certain serovars of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica cause invasive disease (e.g., enteric fever, bacteremia, septicemia, meningitis, etc.) in humans and constitute a global public health problem. A rapid, sensitive diagnostic test is needed to allow prompt initiation of therapy in individual patients and for measuring disease burden at the population level. An innovative and promising new rapid diagnostic technique is microwave-accelerated metal-enhanced fluorescence (MAMEF). We have adapted this assay platform to detect the chromosomal oriC locus common to all Salmonella enterica subsp. e

50 Blood samples were collected from in-patients with febrile splenomegaly suspected to be Malta fever, in Sharkia fever hospitals; Egypt. The samples were subjected to serological tests (tube agglutination, Widal & Coombs) for diagnosis of brucellosis. The results of tube agglutination (TAT) revealed that 5 (10%) were positive; the titre ranging from 1/80-1/320, 3 doubtful (1/40) and 42 negative (1/20, 1/10 and no agglutination). Results of the Coombs test on negative and doubtful of TAT showed that out of 45 patients; 3 (6.66%) were positive; the titre ranging from 1/80-1/160, one doubtful a

Salmonella enterica (S. enterica) has infected humans for a long time, but its evolutionary history and geographic spread across Eurasia is still poorly understood. Here, we screened for pathogen DNA in 14 ancient individuals from the Bronze Age Quanergou cemetery (XBQ), Xinjiang, China. In 6 individuals we detected S. enterica. We reconstructed S. enterica genomes from those individuals, which form a previously undetected phylogenetic branch basal to Paratyphi C, Typhisuis and Choleraesuis-the so-called Para C lineage. Based on pseudogene frequency, our analysis suggests that the ancient S. e

Enteric fever is caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A, B, and C. While S. Typhi remains the primary causative agent of enteric fever, S. Paratyphi A is responsible for an increasing portion of enteric fever incidence. However, the current available vaccines for enteric fever are all developed from S. Typhi, and lack adequate cross immune protection against paratyphoid fever A. Therefore, paratyphoid A vaccines are urgently needed. The present paper reviews the latest progresses in pathogenesis, global burden, infection features of paratyphoid fev

BACKGROUND: Enteric fever remains an important cause of morbidity in many low-income countries and Salmonella Paratyphi A has emerged as the aetiological agent in an increasing proportion of cases. Lack of adequate diagnostics hinders early diagnosis and prompt treatment of both typhoid and paratyphoid but development of assays to identify paratyphoid has been particularly neglected. Here we describe the development of a rapid and sensitive blood culture PCR method for detection of Salmonella Paratyphi A from blood, potentially allowing for appropriate diagnosis and antimicrobial treatment to

BACKGROUND: Diseases caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi remain a major public health concern. Due to overlapping clinical symptoms and the limitations of diagnostic methods, distinguishing S. Typhi from S. Paratyphi (A, B, and C) is challenging. Delayed and inaccurate diagnoses increase the risk of complications and transmission, highlighting the need for rapid, reliable molecular markers.
AIM OF STUDY: This study aimed to develop and validate gene-based molecular markers, using optimized PCR conditions, for the accurate identification of S.

Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) are the leading cause of foodborne infections worldwide and a major cause of bloodstream infections in infants and HIV-infected adults in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Salmonella Typhimurium (serogroup B) and Salmonella Enteritidis (serogroup D) are the most common serovars in this region. However, data describing rarer invasive NTS serovars, particularly those belonging to serogroups C1 and C2, circulating in SSA are lacking. We previously conducted systematic blood culture surveillance on pediatric patients in Bamako, Mali, from 2002 to 2014, and the results showed

Salmonella paratyphi A, the second most common cause of enteric fever in Southeast Asia, is a habitant of and a pathogen for humans only. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are both essential virulence factors and protective antigens for systemic infections caused by groups A, B, C, and D nontyphoidal salmonellae. The O-specific polysaccharide of S. paratyphi A is composed of a trisaccharide, -->2-alpha-D)-Manp-(1-->4)-alpha-L-Rhap-(1-->3)-alpha-D-Galp -(1-->, with a branch of D-paratose from the C-3 of alpha-D-mannose, and the C-3 of beta-L-rhamnose is partially O acetylated (C. It has previously been shown that Salmonella paratyphi A associates with adult Schistosoma mansoni worms in animal models and in patients with schistosomiasis, resulting in Salmonella infections that are difficult to manage unless the helminthic parasite is eliminated. In the present study, characteristics of this association were explored. In vitro, fresh serum, but not heat-inactivated (56 degree C, 30 minutes) serum, from normal hamsters (NH) and schistosome-infected hamsters (SIH) equally inhibited bacterial growth. When either group of animals was given S. paratyphi A intracardially, ther

Enteric fever, a systemic illness, is caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi or S. enterica serovar Paratyphi A, B or C. The organism is transmitted to humans by the faecal oral route and is endemic in countries with poor sanitation and lacking clean drinking water. There are around 27 million individuals infected with S. Typhi worldwide annually. Enteric fever is a particular problem in travellers to endemic areas, especially those visiting friends and relatives. Currently, the two main vaccines recommended for travellers are the Vi polysaccharide vaccine and the oral Ty21a vaccine. Thes
