Comparison of mercury and methylmercury in northern pike and Arctic grayling from western Alaska rivers.

In western Alaska, mercury (Hg) could be a potential health risk to people whose diet is primarily fish-based. In 2000, total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were examined in northern pike (Esox lucius) and Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) from two watersheds in western Alaska, the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers. Whitefish (Coregonus sp.) were also examined from the Kuskokwim River. Pike from the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers had mean concentrations of THg in muscle of 1.506 and 0.628 mg/kg wet wt, respectively. The mean concentrations of THg in grayling muscle from these rivers were 0.264 and

A call for phylogenetic context to understand geographic variation and host specificity in the parasitic copepod genus Salmincola.

Freshwater parasitic copepods appear to exhibit great taxonomic diversity. However, little is known about gene flow between species or whether there is incongruence between morphological and phylogenetic species definitions. Additionally, little is known about what evolutionary factors may contribute to speciation across various lineages. The copepod genus Salmincola, which includes common ectoparasites of fishes in the family Salmonidae, is distributed throughout the northern hemisphere and is a good model to demonstrate limited taxonomic understanding. Much of the regular scholarly output re

First report of Gyrodactylus teuchis (Monopisthocotyla: Gyrodactylidae) on farmed rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792) in Russia.

We recorded Gyrodactylus teuchis Lautraite, Blanc, Thiery, Daniel & Vigneulle, 1999 on one-year-old farmed rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Salmoniformes, Salmonidae) from Lake Kalmozero (White Sea drainage system, Republic of Karelia, Russia) in May and October 2023. Morphological identification of these specimens was confirmed by molecular data on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene and the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). Analyses of the newly obtained cox1 gene sequences show they are identical to fragments of sequences of this gene for G. teuchis

Ambient Developmental Temperatures and Maternal Thyroid Supply Promote Early Life Diversification in Salmonids.

The interplay between ambient temperature and thyroid signaling controls the morphogenesis of poikilotherms in the early stages of life. These two metabolic conditioning factors are crucial for the divergence of fish morphs undergoing adaptive diversification. Using Salvelinus malma, a model salmonid species with high phenotypic plasticity and a capacity for adaptive radiation, we conducted a series of experiments by rearing sympatric large predatory, mid-sized generalized and dwarf insectivorous morphs from both lacustrine and riverine environments. First, we compared the developmental rates

First detection of Flavobacterium psychrophilum in juvenile Siberian sturgeons (Acipenser baerii) and description of the pathological findings.

Flavobacterium psychrophilum affects many cultured fish species and is considered one of the most important bacterial pathogens causing substantial economic losses in salmonid aquaculture worldwide. Here, F. psychrophilum was identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and nested PCR as the aetiological agent causing mortality in diseased juvenile Siberian sturgeons (Acipenser baerii) reared on a freshwater fish farm. Diseased sturgeons were lethargic and displayed dark skin pigmentation, increased mucus production and the presence

Assessing the presence and spread of Renibacterium salmoninarum between farmed and wild fish in Sweden.

Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) can be a devastating bacterial infection in salmonids, and it is present in aquaculture throughout the world. BKD is caused by the Gram-positive facultative intracellular bacterium Renibacterium salmoninarum (R. salmoninarum) that is spread both horizontally and vertically. Disease signs include external ulcerations and blisters and internal signs such as organ swelling, granulomas, petechiae and ascites. In Sweden, BKD accounts for a significant income loss in aquacultures due to expensive decontamination of the facility and increased disease susceptibility for

Application of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) shock to induce triploid development in the European grayling (Thymallus thymallus L.).

Use of parental individuals from allochthonous lineages to produce stocking specimens resulted in genetic contamination of many local European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) populations. Stocking programs including triploid individuals that are not able to reproduce with stocks located in natural habitats due to being reproductively sterile could contribute to populations of the European grayling and prevent regional lineages from the genetic pollution. The main goal of the present research, therefore, was to provide conditions for triploidization of the European grayling and examine gonads of

Microhabitat preference of Anisakis simplex in three salmonid species: immunological implications.

Three salmonid fish species, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo salar and Salmo trutta, were infected experimentally with the parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex (A. simplex) and the difference between in vivo behaviour of the nematode in the three fish species was investigated. Infection success rate differed between species. S. salar (Baltic salmon) showed the highest number of successfully established nematodes, whereas S. trutta (brown trout) and O. mykiss (rainbow trout) had a higher natural resistance. Microhabitat selection of nematodes differed according to fish species. In brown trout, A. sim

Oxygen transfer, gill resistance and structural changes in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri, Richardson) gills perfused with vasoactive agents.

1. Gill resistance (Rg) and oxygen transfer (To2) were measured in perfused rainbow trout gills. After perfusion the gills were analysed morphometrically. 2. Rg increased with 40% and To2 decreased with 91% during 60 min perfusion without vasoactive substances in the perfusion Ringer. 3. In presence of 10 micro M adrenaline both Rg and To2 remained stable at their starting levels throughout the experimental period (60 min). 4. With 0.2 micro M acetylcholine and 10 micro M adrenaline in Ringer Rg increased nearby to the same extent as in perfusions without vasoactive agents, while To2 was not s

Acute toxicity and tissue concentrations of 6PPD-quinone in Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus, Thymallinae).

Studies of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPDQ) toxicity have identified sensitive and resistant species within the subfamily Salmoninae, but thus far fewer than 10 species, all in two genera (Oncorhynchus and Salvelinus), have shown sensitivity in experiments. The Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus, Salmonidae, Thymallinae) was extirpated from its range in the Great Lakes region of the United States, but because of the importance of this species to the Native American tribes of Michigan, a reintroduction effort is underway. Because high 6PPDQ concentrations have

Simulated effects of increasing salmonid production on sea lice populations in Norway.

Norway produces more than one million tonnes of salmonids every year, almost exclusively in open-water net pens. In 2014, the Norwegian government announced plans to increase salmonid production. However, increasing the number of farmed salmonids can have negative effects on the marine environment that threaten the industry's sustainability. In particular, production growth can lead to an increase in density-dependent diseases, including parasitic sea lice. The aim of this study was to simulate the effects of increased salmonid production on sea lice abundance using different scenarios for inc

Gene transcriptional profiling of osmoregulatory stress response in salmonids: Development and assessment of high-throughput multispecies assays.

Osmoregulatory stress is a critical factor in the welfare and performance of salmonids under captive rearing for aquaculture and conservation, and characterizing cellular responses to that stress may foster better husbandry. One approach for early detection of osmotic stress is gene transcriptional profiling, where a suite of qPCR assays designed for related-function genes is used to determine patterns of transcriptional responses to stress. This study describes the development, assessment and application of 28 Taqman qPCR assays for use on the OpenArray® platform as an osmoregulatory stress t

Pathogen coinfections in wild and farmed salmonids: A systematic review.

Coinfections have been reported in a wide range of organisms, including wild and farmed salmon and trout. However, the effects of coinfections on host resistance to pathogens remain poorly understood. A primary pathogen can modulate the host's immune response to subsequent infections, either by suppressing or priming the immune system. However, in some cases, pathogens may compete within the same host, potentially reducing or neutralizing the severity and impact of the disease. This systematic review examines the impacts of coinfections on farmed and wild salmonids, synthesizing evidence from

Investigation of wild caught whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), for infection with viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) and experimental challenge of whitefish with VHSV.

Abstract One hundred and forty-eight wild whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), were caught by electrofishing and sampled for virological examination in December 1999 and 2000, during migration from the brackish water feeding grounds to the freshwater spawning grounds, where the whitefish may come into contact with farmed rainbow trout. All samples were examined on cell cultures. No viruses were isolated. Three viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) isolates of different origin were tested in infection trials by immersion and intraperitoneal (IP) injection, using 1.5 g farmed whitefish: an

Species-specific reaction of liver ultrastructure in Zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) and trout (Salmo gairdneri) after prolonged exposure to 4-chloroaniline.

The morphological alterations of hepatocytes of female zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio, and fingerling rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, following prolonged exposure to 0.04, 0.2 and 1 mg/L of 4-chloroaniline were investigated by means of light and electron microscopy. Changes in peroxisomes were visualized by cytochemical demonstration of catalase activity after incubation in the alkaline diaminobenzidine medium. The amount of storage products was illustrated by the silver impregnation technique. In a dose-dependent manner, the reaction of female zebrafish liver is characterized by a disturbance o

Biomicroscopic and histologic pathology of the eye in riboflavin deficient rainbow trout (Salmogairdneri).

Quadruplicate lots of 35 fingerling rainbow trout (mean body weight 11.2 g) were fed for 20 weeks a complete diet or one deficient in riboflavin. Five fish from each low were examined for ocular lesions each week. At the end of the experiment eyes of three fish form each lot were examined histologically. Beginning with the 14th week, epithelial changes were present in the cornea; they appeared as thickening of the stroma and endothelium and resulted in clouding. Opacity of the lens originated in the posterior subcapsular cortex and progressed to lens fiber autolysis and liquefaction.
