Salicylic acid negatively affects the response to salt stress in pea plants.

We studied the effect of salicylic acid (SA) treatment on the response of pea plants to salinity. Sodium chloride (NaCl)-induced damage to leaves was increased by SA, which was correlated with a reduction in plant growth. The content of reduced ascorbate and glutathione in leaves of salt-treated plants increased in response to SA, although accumulation of the respective oxidised forms occurred. An increase in hydrogen peroxide also occurred in leaves of salt-exposed plants treated with SA. In the absence of NaCl, SA increased ascorbate peroxidase (APX; 100 μm) and glutathione-S transferase (GS

Hydrogen Sulfide Regulates Salt Tolerance in Rice by Maintaining Na(+)/K(+) Balance, Mineral Homeostasis and Oxidative Metabolism Under Excessive Salt Stress.

Being a salt sensitive crop, rice growth and development are frequently affected by soil salinity. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been recently explored as an important priming agent regulating diverse physiological processes of plant growth and development. Despite its enormous prospects in plant systems, the role of H2S in plant stress tolerance is still elusive. Here, a combined pharmacological, physiological and biochemical approach was executed aiming to examine the possible mechanism of H2S in enhancement of rice salt stress tolerance. We showed that pretreating rice plants with H2S donor so

Hydrogen Sulfide Mediates K+ and Na+ Homeostasis in the Roots of Salt-Resistant and Salt-Sensitive Poplar Species Subjected to NaCl Stress.

Non-invasive micro-test techniques (NMT) were used to analyze NaCl-altered flux profiles of K+, Na+, and H+ in roots and effects of NaHS (a H2S donor) on root ion fluxes in two contrasting poplar species, Populus euphratica (salt-resistant) and Populus popularis (salt-sensitive). Both poplar species displayed a net K+ efflux after exposure to salt shock (100 mM NaCl), as well as after short-term (24 h), and long-term (LT) (5 days) saline treatment (50 mM NaCl, referred to as salt stress). NaHS (50 μM) restricted NaCl-induced K+ efflux in roots irrespective of the duration of salt exposure, but

Responses, Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms, and Mitigation Strategies of Grapevine Under Salt Stress.

Soil salinization has become a major global abiotic threat restricting sustainable viticulture, especially in coastal and inland saline-alkali zones. Unlike cereal crops mainly suffering from sodium toxicity, grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is a typical chloride-sensitive woody perennial, subjected to superimposed damages of osmotic stress, ionic imbalance and secondary oxidative injury under saline conditions which severely suppress vegetative growth and degrade berry quality. This review systematically summarizes the multi-layered physiological adaptive mechanisms of grapevine against salt str

Mechanistic insights and breeding prospects of secondary metabolites in wheat salt stress tolerance.

Secondary metabolites play important roles in osmotic adjustment, ion homeostasis, and redox signaling in wheat under salinity stress. Together, these functions support plant acclimation to saline conditions. Integrative omics approaches can clarify the regulation of their biosynthetic pathways. Applying this knowledge in targeted breeding may accelerate the development of saltresilient wheat cultivars. Salt stress is a major environmental challenge that adversely affects wheat growth, developmental cascades, and grain yield and quality. As a major staple crop, it is imperative to improve whea

MYB Transcription Factors Negatively Regulate StL3OH in Salt Stress Response of Schizonepeta tenuifolia.

Salt stress affects the growth, quality, and secondary metabolism of medicinal plants, but its effects on essential oil biosynthesis in Schizonepeta tenuifolia remain unclear. In this study, a salt stress model was established for Schizonepeta tenuifolia (Benth.) Briq. to investigate changes in growth, monoterpenoid accumulation, non-targeted metabolism, and transcriptional profiles. To further clarify the regulatory mechanism of monoterpenoids biosynthesis, the MYB family members were identified at the genome-wide level, and candidate regulators were screened based on the expression patterns

REM Gene Family in Sugar Beet and Functional BvREM12 in Salt Stress Tolerance.

Soil salinization acts as a major abiotic stress and severely hampers global agricultural productivity. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying plant salt tolerance is of great significance for crop improvement. Remorin (REM) proteins are plant-specific membrane marker proteins that play a key role in stress signaling; however, their function in the salt tolerance response of sugar beet remains unclear. In this study, 14 BvREM gene family members were identified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that this family can be divided into five subgroups and exhibits significant interspecies col

Loss of Aucsia2 remodels root architecture and enhances salt stress resilience in tomato.

Aucsia (Auxin cum silencing action) genes are widespread throughout the green plant lineage and encode miniproteins of 40-56 amino acids characterized by a conserved 16-amino acid motif. In tomato, the Aucsia gene family comprises two members, Aucsia1 and Aucsia2, whose simultaneous silencing has previously revealed a role in auxin biology. Here, we demonstrate that the knockout of Aucsia2, the most highly expressed family member, had a positive effect on fruit set and modified root system architecture. Specifically, Aucsia2 CRISPR-Cas9 mutants (cr-Aucsia2) displayed fewer lateral roots than W

Exogenous curcumin alleviates salt stress in lavender plants: a physiological and biochemical investigation.

This work aimed to study the responses of Lavandula angustifolia (subspecies officinalis and angustifolia) to salt stress and curcumin (Cur). Salt stress was imposed by NaCl at different concentrations (0, 100, and 200 mM) with or without Cur (100 mg/L). Salt stress significantly inhibited growth in both subspecies (subsp.). However, subsp. officinalis was more NaCl sensitive and attained lower biomass under salt stress than subsp. angustifolia. Proline accumulation and reduction of chlorophylls were detected in both subsp. exposed to salt stress. An increment in malondialdehyde (MDA) content

Label-Free Quantitative Proteomics Unravel the Impacts of Salt Stress on Dendrobium huoshanense.

Salt stress is a constraint on crop growth and productivity. When exposed to high salt stress, metabolic abnormalities that disrupt reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis result in massive oxygen radical deposition. Dendrobium huoshanense is a perennial orchid herb that thrives in semi-shade conditions. Although lots of studies have been undertaken on abiotic stresses (high temperature, chilling, drought, etc.) of model plants, few studies were reported on the mechanism of salt stress in D. huoshanense. Using a label-free protein quantification method, a total of 2,002 differential expresse

Transcriptome-Based Analysis of the Effects of Salt Stress on the Embryos of Hypomesus nipponensis.

The increasing salinization and alkalization of inland waters in China pose a growing threat to the early developmental stages of fish. This study investigated the survival rates and transcriptomic response mechanisms of pond smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis) embryos, a species naturally adapted to brackish water, under different salinity stresses. Fertilized eggs were exposed to four salinity gradients: freshwater (0‱, experimental control) and 7‱, 14‱, and 21‱ for 7 days. The results showed that the upper salinity tolerance limit for embryos was between 21‱ and 28‱; hatching rates were zero in t

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of Ginkgo biloba to salt stress and exogenous melatonin.

INTRODUCTION: Soil salinization constrains plant growth, and enhancing salt tolerance is of great significance. METHODS: Here, Ginkgo biloba seedlings were treated with control (CK), salt stress (S), or salt stress + melatonin (S+M). Integrating physiology, transcriptomics, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we explored how melatonin enhances salt tolerance. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Salt stress reduced chlorophyll content, suggesting potential impairment of photosynthetic capacity, appeared to increase membrane lipid peroxidation, and led to substantial proline accumula

Plant genomic and microbial interplay in the rhizosphere under salt stress: a review.

Soil salinization has been considered as a global problem in agriculture, which decreases crop productivity and threatens food security. Salt stress causes complex physiological damages in plants such as ionic imbalance, osmotic stress, and oxidative damage. However, plants have developed several genomic mechanisms to reduce these negative influences that are further supported by dynamic interactions with rhizosphere microbial communities. This review integrates current advances in understanding the interplay between plant genomes and the rhizosphere microbiome under salt stress. It highlights

Long Noncoding RNAs in Response to Hyperosmolarity Stress, but Not Salt Stress, Were Mainly Enriched in the Rice Roots.

Due to their immobility and possession of underground parts, plants have evolved various mechanisms to endure and adapt to abiotic stresses such as extreme temperatures, drought, and salinity. However, the contribution of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) to different abiotic stresses and distinct rice seedling parts remains largely uncharacterized beyond the protein-coding gene (PCG) layer. Using transcriptomics and bioinformatics methods, we systematically identified lncRNAs and characterized their expression patterns in the roots and shoots of wild type (WT) and ososca1.1 (reduced hyperosmolali

Suaeda salsa: stress adaptation, soil restoration, and agronomic potential in salt-affected environments.

Suaeda salsa is a widely distributed annual euhalophyte that thrives under both saline and saline-alkaline conditions, making it a valuable model for understanding plant salt-tolerance mechanisms and a promising resource for saline agriculture. However, the integrated understanding of how its physiological, biochemical, molecular, and microbial responses collectively support salt tolerance remains fragmented. Moreover, how these traits contribute to soil restoration and agricultural use remains insufficiently understood. S. salsa achieves optimal growth at 200 mM NaCl and tolerates salinity up

OsBTBZ1 Regulates Nitrate Transport in Arabidopsis thaliana via NRT2.1 Modulation Under Salt Stress.

Nitrogen availability and salinity are two major environmental factors affecting plant growth and development. Nitrate uptake is strictly regulated through transcriptional networks that balance nutrient assimilation and stress responses. The role of BTB-ZF transcription factors, which have been implicated in various abiotic stress responses, in coordinating nitrate uptake remains largely unknown; specifically, the precise molecular mechanisms through which OsBTBZ1, a BTB-ZF transcription factor from Oryza sativa, confers salt tolerance remain to be fully elucidated. Here, we characterize the f

High-salt/hyperosmotic stress induces cardiomyocyte hypertrophy via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

High-salt exposure is linked to maladaptive cardiac remodeling, but its underlying transcriptional mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the effects of NaCl-supplemented high-salt/hyperosmotic stress (final Na + concentration: 190-210 mM) on H9c2 cells. NaCl supplementation induced a distinct hypertrophic phenotype, most pronounced at 210 mM for 48 h, characterized by increased cell surface area, elevated protein levels of ANP and α-SMA, and upregulated mRNA expression of classic hypertrophic markers (ANP, BNP, and Myh7). Bulk RNA-seq identified 2125 differentially expressed genes under 2

CaCP15 Gene Negatively Regulates Salt and Osmotic Stress Responses in Capsicum annuum L.

Salt and osmotic stress seriously restrict the growth, development, and productivity of horticultural crops in the greenhouse. The papain-like cysteine proteases (PLCPs) participate in multi-stress responses in plants. We previously demonstrated that salt and osmotic stress affect cysteine protease 15 of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) (CaCP15); however, the role of CaCP15 in salt and osmotic stress responses is unknown. Here, the function of CaCP15 in regulating pepper salt and osmotic stress resistance was explored. Pepper plants were subjected to abiotic (sodium chloride, mannitol, salicylic ac

Graphene oxide decreases the effects of salt stress on Persian clover seed germination.

Among biotic and abiotic stresses, the most restrictive for plant distribution is salt stress, where different concentrations might exert harmful effects on seed germination. Recently, nanomaterials were used successfully to mitigate these stresses, indicating that plants may be able to develop normally in adverse conditions. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of graphene oxide (GO) on the germination of Persian clover seedlings under salt stress conditions. Following sown on substrate paper, seeds were tested after exposure to different concentrations of graphene oxide (0, 125,
