Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects children, causing a strong impact on the quality of life. The most affected subjects live in urban areas or in developed countries, with prevalence increased up to 15%-20% in children and from 1% to 3% in adults during the past 30 years. Most adults had the first signs of illness before the age of 5, many of them before the age of 1. Many therapies in use are associated with side effects and often induce intolerance; therefore, many studies are based on the search for topical products that have an effective benefit, are we

The potato, being an underground vegetable crop, faces consistent threats from soil- and tuber-borne fungal and bacterial pathogens. Black scurf and stem canker disease caused by the fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn is a critical global concern in the potato cultivation system. In this study, we evaluated the disease mitigation potential of five systemic acquired resistance-inducing chemicals viz., salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, β-aminobutyric acid, γ-aminobutyric acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Two common methods, tuber dipping and foliar spray, were utilized in this experiment to e

Zanha africana (Radlk.) Exell (Sapindaceae) root bark is used by farmers throughout sub-Saharan Africa to protect stored grain from bruchid beetles, such as Callosobruchus maculatus. Chloroform, methanol and water extracts of Z. africana root bark inhibited oviposition and caused significantly higher mortality of C. maculatus at a rate of application equivalent to that applied by farmers compared to control insects. The chloroform extract contained nor-hopanes rarely found in plants of which seven were isolated, one of which was previously known. Two of the most abundant nor-hopanes 3β,6β-dihy

Pathogenic bacteria and difficult-to-degrade pollutants in water have been serious problems that always plague people. Therefore, finding a "one stone-two birds" method that can quickly catalyze the degradation of pollutants and show effective antibacterial behavior become an urgent requirement. This work reports a facile one-step strategy for fabricating a Rambutan-like Fe3O4@AgAu@PDA (Fe3O4@AgAu@Polydopamine) core/shell nanosphere with both catalytic and antibacterial activities which can be critically improved by externally applying an NIR laser irradiation (NIR, 808 nm) and a rotating magn

L-α-amino-methylenecyclopropyl propionic acid (Hypoglycin A, HGA) has been found to be the toxic compound in fruits of the Sapindaceae family causing acute intoxication when ingested as food or feed. Clinical symptoms are consistent with acquired multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD). Ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to measure HGA after butylation. Sample volumes were 10μL for serum and 20μL for urine. Internal standard for HGA was d3-leucine, samples were plotted on a 7-point linear calibration curve. Coefficients of variation were <15% at

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) films exhibit limited functionality, a constraint that impedes their large-scale application in food packaging. The objective of this study was to modify CMCS films with longan seed extracts (LSE) to enhance their comprehensive performance. The fundamental physicochemical properties of LSE were characterized, and the structure-performance relationship of the resultant blended films was explored. All samples were characterized for microstructure, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, UV-blocking ability, and antibacterial activity. The findings indicated

There is a need to investigate new methods of controlling cyathostomins in horses due to increasing anthelmintic resistance amongst these parasites. In a previous study we identified the Australian plant Alectryon oleifolius as having anthelmintic activity towards cyathostomins. This study aimed to isolate and identify the bioactive compound(s) responsible for all or part of this anthelmintic activity and quantify its activity in vitro. The condensed tannin procyanidin A2 was isolated from the plant through a process of bioassay guided fractionation and identified using 1D and 2D nuclear magne

BACKGROUND: Malaria is one of the most important infectious diseases in the World. The choice for the treatment is highly limited, and several of these may eventually be lost or compromised due to drug resistance. The use of plant medicine in the treatment of malaria and its various presentations is a common practice in many countries of Africa where the disease is mostly endemic. Dodonaea angustifolia is traditionally used in Ethiopia for prophylaxis against malaria. The present study is attempted to evaluate the antimalarial activity of the solvent fractions of root extracts of D. angustifol

Although various hair health medicines have been developed and are used today, additional safe and effective natural hair growth therapies still need to be developed. Nephelium lappaceum var. pallens (Hiern) Leenh. extract (NLE) reportedly exhibits anticancer, antidiabetic, and antioxidant effects, which could be linked to androgenic processes; however, there are no reports of its effects on testosterone (TS)-inhibited hair growth. The present study investigated the effects of NLE on TS-induced inhibition of hair growth in C57BL/6 mice and human follicular dermal papilla cells. Oral administra

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Candida albicans is developing resistance to existing drugs increasing morbidity and mortality, which elevates an immediate need to explore new antifungal agents. Phytochemicals are an excellent source of therapeutic agents. We previously reported the antifungal activity of the crude extract of Dodonaea viscosa var. angustifolia Jacq. (DVA) from which a beneficial compound flavone: 5,6,8-trihydroxy-7,4' dimethoxy flavone (5,6,8-trihydroxy-7-methoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-4-one) abbreviated as TMMC, was extracted.

Litchi (Litchi chinesis Sonn.) is the most economically significant member of Sapindaceae family, especially in sub-tropical regions. However, its tall tree body often brings many inconveniences to production management. In order to modify the tree size or growth for productivity optimization and simplifying management, it is urgent to reveal the dwarf mechanism of litchi for dwarfing rootstocks or cultivar breeding. However, to date, the mechanisms on litchi dwarfism is still poor known. In the present study, transcriptome profiling were performed on L. chinensis cv. 'Feizixiao' (FZX, vigorou
