Infections by Sarcocystis in cattle are ubiquitous worldwide. There is considerable debate concerning the identity of Sarcocystis spp. in cattle. Proper diagnosis of Sarcocystis spp. is important to assess their economic and public health importance. Currently there are seven named species: Sarcocystis hirsuta, Sarcocystis cruzi, Sarcocystis hominis, Sarcocystis bovifelis, arcocystis heydorni, Sarcocystis bovini and Sarcocystis rommeli. Additionally, there are unnamed Sarcocystis spp. Two species, S. hominis and S. heydorni, are zoonotic. One out of seven species (S. hirsuta, contracted from c

Sarcocystis miescheriana infection is an important cause of carcass condemnation during meat inspection. The infection can cause morbidity and mortality in domestic pigs. In this study, an 8-month-old finisher pig was presented to a local abattoir for slaughter. Multiple white nodular lesions affecting the meat were observed, resulting in the condemnation of the carcass. Consequently, half of the carcass was submitted to the necropsy diagnostic laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medicine for further evaluation. Grossly, all superficial and deep muscle groups had severe multifocal macrocyst

Recent reports of Sarcocystis fayeri-induced toxicity in people consuming horse meat warrant investigation on the prevalence and molecular characterization of Sarcocystis spp. infection in horses. Sarcocysts in skeletal muscle of horses have been commonly regarded as an incidental finding. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of sarcocysts in skeletal muscle of horses with neuromuscular disease. Our findings indicated that S. fayeri infection was common in young mature horses with neuromuscular disease and could be associated with myopathic and neurogenic processes. The number of infe

Samples of muscle tissue from the diaphragm, oesophagus and/or heart of eight adult red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) from the Quintos de Mora Park in Toledo, Central Spain, were screened for sarcocysts by means of the compression method. From positive samples, individual sarcocysts were excised and examined in wet mounts under a light microscope (LM) in order to study their basic morphology before being preserved for molecular studies. In all red deer examined, only microscopic sarcocysts were found. Those in the diaphragm and oesophagus were spindle-shaped and about 1 × 0.1 mm in size, wh

Sarcocystis infections are common in the muscles of herbivores but were, until recently, considered relatively rare in carnivores. Little is known of sarcocysts in the muscles of river otters in the United States. In a previous epidemiologic study of Toxoplasma gondii infections in North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) from Michigan in the 2018 and 2019 harvest season, Sarcocystis DNA was found in 34 (27.4%) of 124 otter muscles. Tongues from these 34 PCR-positive samples were further examined here for Sarcocystis species. An additional batch of frozen 62 samples collected at the end

Species of Sarcocystis parasitize a wide range of vertebrate hosts, sometimes causing disease in humans and animals. Here, frozen muscles of 239 bobcats (Lynx rufus) from Minnesota were tested for Sarcocystis infections. After thawing, muscles were examined microscopically by compression preparations of unfixed muscles and histological sections of paraffin embedded tissues. Some sarcocysts were later characterized using electron microscopy and gene sequencing for comparison to other Sarcocystis species in the genus. In the first batch of 50 bobcats trapped in 2014-2015, only tongues were exami

Mule deer fawns (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) inoculated with sporocysts of Sarcocystis hemionilatrantis became infected, developed clinical signs of disease, and died, due to the infection itself or from intercurrent pneumonia. Clinical signs were first noticed 18 days after infection and fawns died from postinfection days 27 to 63. Histopathologic examination revealed early lesions in skeletal muscle which consisted of perivascular necrosis with mononuclear and neutrophilic cell infiltration, accompanied by edema, degeneration, and focal necrosis of muscle. Subsequently, this reaction subsi

Lesions of sarcocystosis were studied in 14 calves necropsied between seven and 110 days after inoculation with 5000 to 25 million sporocysts of Sarcocystis hirsuta from cats. Calves developed fever, anemia, and diarrhea between 11 and 30 days after inoculation. The development of first generation meronts in arteries of small intestine, mesentery, and mesenteric lymph nodes seven to 25 days after inoculation was associated with vascular occlusion and necrosis of associated tissues. The development of second generation meronts in capillaries of striated muscles 15 to 23 days after inoculation w

BACKGROUND: Sarcocystis is a protozoan parasite of significant zoonotic and economic importance, primarily transmitted through the consumption of contaminated meat. Conventional antiparasitic drugs show limited efficacy and potential side effects, leading to growing interest in nanotechnology-based alternatives.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the in vitro antiparasitic activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against Sarcocystis bradyzoites isolated from sheep.
METHODS: Macroscopic cysts were collected from infected sheep muscles at the Tabriz abattoir, and bradyzoites were purified and con

Sarcosporidian cysts in the skeletal muscle of domestic pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica) have previously been attributed to infection with Sarcocystis falcatula, which is shed in the faeces of the opossum (Didelphis virginiana). Here, we describe fatal spontaneous encephalitis and myositis associated with Sarcocystis infections in three flocks of racing pigeons with 47 of 244 animals affected. The clinical course was characterized by depression, mild diarrhoea, torticollis, opisthotonus, paralysis and trembling. Histopathological examination of 13 pigeons revealed generalized severe granul

The prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. infection was investigated in 605 sheep, 826 goats, 1080 cattle, 580 water buffaloes and 36 camels slaughtered from 1992 to 1996 in the Baghdad area (Iraq) using naked eye examination for macroscopic sarcocysts, and peptic digestion, muscle squash, squeezing methods and indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) for microscopic types. The intestinal stages of the parasite were also studied in dogs experimentally fed with tissues containing microscopic cysts. The percentage prevalence of macroscopic cysts were 4.1, 33.6, 0.2, 15.6 and 0, and of the microscopic

Samples of heart, tongue, oesophagus and diaphragm muscle from twenty-two naturally infected roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) harvested in central Italy were examined for sarcosporidiasis. The structure of Sarcocystis spp. muscle cysts was examined by light and electron microscopy. Only one type of thin-walled cyst was distinguished by light microscopy. Electron microscopy showed cysts having a thin highly folded primary cyst wall, without fibrillar material, that formed thin hair-like protrusions often having a T-form, especially close to host cell mithocondria. The cysts appeared to belong to

To assess the roles of the German cockroach (Blatella germanica) and the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) in the transmission of Sarcocystis muris and of 3 other coccidia of cats-Toxoplasma gondii, Isospora felis, and Isospora rivolta, cockroaches exposed to feces containing these coccidia were periodically fed to mice, as was a portion of the fecal matter. Sarcocystis muris sporocysts, which in feces remained infectious for at least 20 days, were also transmitted to mice by P. americana for at least 20 days and by B. germanica for 5 days after exposure to infectious feces. The increase of wild boar populations density and their meat consumption across Europe could expose humans to a plethora of foodborne diseases as sarcocystosis, caused by the zoonotic protozoan Sarcocystis suihominis. Humans become infected by eating raw or undercooked pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) containing S. suihominis sarcocysts. Despite this, to date very few data are available on the risk of infection by this parasite to wild boar (Sus scrofa) meat consumers. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the occurrence of Sarcocystis spp. in wild boars from southern Italy, applying both histolo

Raptors may serve as both intermediate and definitive hosts for Sarcocystis spp. Past research has documented fatal encephalitis in raptors caused by various Sarcocystis spp., whereas other surveys have found a high prevalence of tissue cysts without evidence of disease. Little is known about the prevalence of Sarcocystis in raptors in the eastern USA. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of tissue cysts and histopathologic changes associated with Sarcocystis spp. infection in raptors in eastern Tennessee. Tissues of 33 raptors from Tennessee, USA, were assessed with histopath

Sarcocystis spp. cause pigeon protozoan encephalitis, a neuronal disease. A female pigeon exhibiting torticollis had a necrotic area in the cerebral hemisphere surrounded by lesions with perivascular cuffing, gliosis, granulomatous foci, and meningitis. Non-necrotic lesions were also observed in the brainstem. Intact and degenerative schizonts were observed within the neuropils and neurons in the lesions. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted from paraffin-embedded brain tissues and genetically analyzed after gel electrophoresis to determine Sarcocystis spp. using specific primer sets for

The only Sarcocystis species currently known to inhabit the fibers of skeletal and cardiac muscles in horses are S. fayeri, S. bertrami, and S. asinus. We describe herein the invasion of myofibers in a horse by S. gigantea, a sheep-specific species with low virulence in the original host. A hunter gelding was referred to a veterinary surgeon in Newmarket (UK). The anamnestic data reported that the horse had an initial history of swelling of the right forelimb with fluid on the front of the carpus and edema spreading up the forearm. Subsequently, 2 firm lumps were found on the left pectoral mus
