High prevalence of muscular sarcocystosis in cattle and water buffaloes from Selangor, Malaysia.

The prevalence of sarcocystosis in cattle and water buffaloes from peninsular Malaysia was investigated in abattoirs in Selangor state, February, 2011, to March, 2012. Fresh muscle samples were collected from the tongue, heart, oesophagus, diaphragm and skeletal muscles of 102 cattle and 18 water buffaloes. Each sample was initially screened by light microscopy and then fixed for further histopathological analysis. Out of 120 animals examined, 49 (40.8%) harboured the microscopic type of Sarcocystis spp. The positivity rate for cattle was 36.2% and for water buffaloes 66.7%. In cattle, the org

The Sarcocystis muris-infection as a model for research on the chemotherapy of acute sarcocystosis of domestic animals.

Twelve anticoccidial or antimalarial drugs were tested for their efficacy against various development stages of Sarcocystis muris in NMRI-mice. Schizogonic stages present in the liver from day 11 to 17 p.i. showed to be most sensitive to drug action. Sulfaquinoxaline plus pyrimethamine, zoalene and Bay g 7183 completely eliminated these stages. A strong though not 100 per cent efficacy was observed in experiments with primaquine. The other drugs tested were less (halofuginone, sulfadoxine plus trimethoprim) or not effective (sulfadimethoxine, amprolium, monensin, aprinocid, sulfaquinoxaline pl

Pharmacokinetics of oral ponazuril in kea (Nestor notabilis) support its use as a preventative for sarcocystosis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pharmacokinetic profile of ponazuril in kea following administration of a single oral dose and evaluate trough values associated with weekly dosing. The hypothesis was that weekly dosing would maintain plasma ponazuril concentrations above the inhibitory concentration of 5 µg/mL for Sarcocystis organisms. METHODS: 8 adult kea were administered 30 mg/kg of ponazuril via oral gavage. Blood samples were collected at 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, and 192 hours in an incomplete balanced block design. Ponazuril administration was then continued weekly, and bloo

Atypical fatal sarcocystosis associated with Sarcocystis neurona in a White-nosed coati (Nasua narica molaris).

The protozoan parasite Sarcocystis neurona is an important cause of disease in horses (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, EPM) and marine mammals. Isolated reports of clinical EPM-like disease have been documented in a zebra, raccoon, domestic cat, domestic dog, ferret, skunk, mink, lynx, red panda and fisher. The predominant disease is encephalomyelitis associated with schizonts in neural tissues. Here, we report highly disseminated sarcocystosis, in many tissues of a captive White-nosed coati (Nasua narica molaris). The 14year old, neutered male coati was euthanized due to progressive weakn

Acute muscular sarcocystosis: an international investigation among ill travelers returning from Tioman Island, Malaysia, 2011-2012.

BACKGROUND: Through 2 international traveler-focused surveillance networks (GeoSentinel and TropNet), we identified and investigated a large outbreak of acute muscular sarcocystosis (AMS), a rarely reported zoonosis caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Sarcocystis, associated with travel to Tioman Island, Malaysia, during 2011-2012. METHODS: Clinicians reporting patients with suspected AMS to GeoSentinel submitted demographic, clinical, itinerary, and exposure data. We defined a probable case as travel to Tioman Island after 1 March 2011, eosinophilia (>5%), clinical or laboratory-supp

Sarcocystosis from a One Health perspective: Revisiting zoonotic potential, transmission dynamics, clinical features, and control strategies.

Sarcocystosis is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by apicomplexan parasites of the genus Sarcocystis, which can infect a wide range of hosts, including humans, animals, reptiles, and birds. Humans may serve as either definitive or intermediate hosts, depending on Sarcocystis species. Consumption of undercooked beef containing mature sarcocysts of Sarcocystis hominis or Sarcocystis heydorni, or of raw or partially cooked pork containing Sarcocystis suihominis zoitocysts, may lead to intestinal sarcocystosis in humans. In contrast, muscular sarcocystosis follows ingestion of food or water con

Fatal hepatic sarcocystosis in a captive black bear (Ursus americanus) associated with Sarcocystis canis-like infection.

Fatal hepatic sarcocystosis was diagnosed in a 13-year-old captive black bear (Ursus americanus) with a history of acute onset of vomiting, polyuria, polydipsia, and bilirubinuria. Gross lesions included severe icterus, multisystemic hemorrhage, and gall bladder edema. The most significant microscopic lesion was severe necrotizing hepatitis with intralesional protozoa that reproduced by endopolygeny consistent with a Sarcocystis spp. Infrequent microglial nodules were randomly scattered within the white matter of the cerebral cortices, thalamus, and brainstem, but intralesional protozoal schiz

Economic burden and biological drivers of carcass condemnation due to macroscopic sarcocystosis in Peruvian alpacas (Vicugna pacos).

Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) are essential for Andean food security and represent a sustainable global livestock alternative. However, macroscopic Sarcocystis infection leads to widespread carcass condemnation, devaluing this high-value protein source. This study quantified the biological determinants of sarcocystosis, the carcass condemnation prevalence, and the associated economic burden at the slaughterhouse through a stochastic modeling approach. Retrospective records (2021-2024) from two Andean locations (Ninacaca and Huancavelica) were analyzed to estimate economic impacts, while prospective

Muscular Sarcocystosis in Sheep Associated With Lymphoplasmacytic Myositis and Expression of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I and II.

Sarcocystosis is a protozoal disease affecting a wide range of animals. The aims of this study were to characterize the following in sheep: (1) the muscle pathology in Sarcocystis infection, (2) the inflammatory infiltrate and its relationship to severity of infection, and (3) immune markers expressed by parasitized muscle fibers and parasitic cysts. Skeletal muscle samples from 78 sheep slaughtered in southern Italy were snap frozen and analyzed by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing were used for Sarcocystis species ide

Oesophageal sarcocystosis observed at slaughter provides a reliable and efficient proximate measure of Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in sheep.

OBJECTIVE: Successful disease management requires effective surveillance. Slaughterhouse inspections provide opportunities to efficiently collect regular disease data from many animals across large areas. Toxoplasma is a cat-borne parasite that causes reproduction failure in sheep, although it is not visually detectable at slaughterhouses. Macroscopic sarcocystosis is a disease of sheep that is visually detectable at slaughter and is caused by parasites that share a similar biology with Toxoplasma. We investigated if sarcocystosis could act as a proximate measure for Toxoplasma exposure in she

Spatial Analysis of a Cat-Borne Disease Reveals That Soil pH and Clay Content Are Risk Factors for Sarcocystosis in Sheep.

Cat-borne parasites and their associated diseases have substantial impacts on human, livestock, and wildlife health worldwide. Despite this, large and detailed datasets that allow researchers to study broad-scale trends in the ecology of cat-borne diseases are either difficult to obtain or non-existent. One condition that is easily detected at slaughter is macroscopic sarcocystosis, a cat-borne parasitosis of sheep (Ovis aries). We conducted a cross-sectional study to describe the geographic distribution of sarcocystosis in sheep throughout South Australia and investigate ecosystem characteris

Neglected tropical diseases among two indigenous subtribes in peninsular Malaysia: highlighting differences and co-infection of helminthiasis and sarcocystosis.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections have been documented among these minority groups since 1938. However the prevalence of STH is still high among these communities. Most studies tend to consider the Orang Asli (indigenous) as a homogenous group. In contrary, different subtribes have their own cultural practices. To understand this variation better, we studied the prevalence and associated factors of STH and other gut parasitic infections among two common subtribes (i.e. Temuan and Temiar). Results showed that the prevalence of the overall STH infections was higher in the Temuan subtrib

Bovine sarcocystosis: Sarcocystis species, diagnosis, prevalence, economic and public health considerations, and association of Sarcocystis species with eosinophilic myositis in cattle.

Infections by Sarcocystis in cattle are ubiquitous worldwide. There is considerable debate concerning the identity of Sarcocystis spp. in cattle. Proper diagnosis of Sarcocystis spp. is important to assess their economic and public health importance. Currently there are seven named species: Sarcocystis hirsuta, Sarcocystis cruzi, Sarcocystis hominis, Sarcocystis bovifelis, arcocystis heydorni, Sarcocystis bovini and Sarcocystis rommeli. Additionally, there are unnamed Sarcocystis spp. Two species, S. hominis and S. heydorni, are zoonotic. One out of seven species (S. hirsuta, contracted from c

SARCOCYSTOSIS IN A CAPTIVE FLOCK OF THICK-BILLED PARROTS (RHYNCHOPSITTA PACHYRHYNCHA) FROM 2005 TO 2016: MORBIDITY, MORTALITY, DIAGNOSTICS, AND MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES.

Sarcocystosis was diagnosed in a captive flock of thick-billed parrots (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) at the Wildlife Conservation Society's Queens Zoo. Since the index case in 2005, 45% of mortalities in birds over 30 days of age were due to sarcocystosis. Sarcocystis falcatula was repeatedly identified as the causative agent. The disease predominantly affected younger adult parrots. Administration of antiparasitic medications prior to development of respiratory signs prolonged life in infected birds, but disease was fatal until utilization of a three-drug combination (pyrimethamine, trimethopr
