Kaposi sarcoma following postmastectomy lymphedema.

Classical Kaposi sarcoma (KS) usually appears on lower extremities accompanied or preceded by local lymphedema. However, the development in areas of chronic lymphedema of the arms following mastectomy, mimicking a Stewart-Treves syndrome, has rarely been described. We report an 81-year-old woman who developed multiple, erythematous to purple tumors, located on areas of post mastectomy lymphedema. Histopathological examination evidenced several dermal nodules formed by spindle-shaped cells that delimitated slit-like vascular spaces with some red cell extravasation. Immunohistochemically, the hu

Classic Kaposi sarcoma mimicking chilblains.

Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade vascular tumor associated with human herpes virus-8 infection. It usually presents in elderly patients as violaceous plaques of the lower limbs. However, KS may present in a wide spectrum of atypical clinical forms, leading to misdiagnoses. We report a case of classic KS mimicking chilblains.

Fifty-one Kaposi sarcoma patients.

INTRODUCTION: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a mesenchymal tumor originating from lymphatic endothelial cells. Immunosuppressive patients have higher risk for KS. HHV-8 has a role in immunopathogenesis of KS. Aim Evaluation of demographical properties with tumor characteristics and treatment modalities of KS. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Histopathologically documented KS patients were evaluated retrospectively. Anti-HIV seroprevalence was also evaluated with patient and tumor characteristics besides treatment regimens. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients were included between September 1998 and February 2009. Kaposi sarcoma of lymph nodes.

Sixteen out of 48 adult African patients with Kaposi sarcoma were found to have tumour tissue in lymph nodes. The evidence suggests that there are probably two main types of involvement. One occurs predominantly in younger patients and involves many groups of glands, probably develops in situ, and is associated with a poor prognosis. The other form is the result of metastasis to a node from an aggressive tumour in the neighbourhood. This occurs more commonly in the older patient and carries a much better prognosis than in those with generalised lymphadenopathy, though worse than in patients wi

AIDS-Kaposi Sarcoma and Classic Kaposi Sarcoma: are different ultrasound patterns related to different variants?

BACKGROUND: Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is a malignancy of endothelial skin cells with multifocal localization on the skin, lymph nodes and visceral organs. Although all clinical variants are associated with HHV-8 infection, specific differences in the clinical onset and in the natural history of AIDS-KS and Classic-KS have been described. The present randomised prospective-observational study aimed to investigate whether the ultrasound pattern and color Doppler flow imaging of vascularisation of skin lesions of patients with Classic KS (CKS) or AIDS-KS could provide useful information to the evaluati

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection prior to onset of Kaposi's sarcoma.

OBJECTIVES: Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), a newly discovered human gammaherpesvirus, is found in the majority of KS lesions from patients with and without AIDS. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were examined for KSHV DNA to determine whether viral infection precedes onset of this neoplasm. DESIGN: Randomized and blinded case-control study of prospectively collected PBMC samples from ongoing cohort studies. METHODS: Paired PBMC drawn before and after KS onset from 21 AIDS-KS patients were compared to paired PBMC from 23 high-risk HIV-infected homo-/bisexual patients

Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus viral load in bronchoalveolar lavage as a diagnostic marker for pulmonary Kaposi sarcoma.

OBJECTIVE: Kaposi sarcoma is a vascular tumor that affects the pulmonary system. However, the diagnosis of airway lesions suggestive of pulmonary Kaposi sarcoma (pKS) is reliant on bronchoscopic visualization. We evaluated the role of Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) viral load in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) as a diagnostic biomarker in patients with bronchoscopic evidence of pKS and evaluated inflammatory cytokine profiles in BAL and blood samples. DESIGN: In this retrospective study, we evaluated KSHV viral load and cytokine profiles within BAL and blood samples in patients who underwent

Insights into pathogenic events of HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma and immune reconstitution syndrome related Kaposi sarcoma.

A decrease in the incidence of human immune deficiency virus-associated Kaposi sarcoma (HIV-KS) and regression of some established HIV-KS lesions is evident after the introduction of highly active anti-retroviral treatment (HAART), and is attributed to generalized immune restoration, to the reconstitution of human herpesvirus (HHV)-8 specific cellular immune responses, and to the decrease in HIV Tat protein and HHV-8 loads following HAART. However, a small subset of HIV-seropositive subjects with a low CD4+ T cell count at the time of introduction of HAART, may develop HIV-KS as immune reconst

Identification of HHV8 in early Kaposi's sarcoma: implications for Kaposi's sarcoma pathogenesis.

AIMS: Kaposi's sarcoma is a vascular tumour of uncertain pathogenesis possibly caused by an infectious agent, identified in high risk groups. Accumulating solution phase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and seroepidemiological data suggest that a previously undescribed herpes DNA virus (human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8)) is the causative agent. Using a unique cohort of early Kaposi's sarcoma, the precise cell type infected with HHV8 in such lesions was identified to elucidate further the role of HHV8 in the pathobiology of Kaposi's sarcoma. METHODS: Sixteen cases of early Kaposi's sarcoma (derived fr

Endemic Kaposi's Sarcoma.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a common neoplasm in Eastern and central Africa reflecting the spread of human gammaherpesvirus-8 (HHV-8), now considered a necessary causal agent for the development of KS. The endemic KS subtype can follow an aggressive clinical course with ulcerative skin lesions with soft tissue invasion or even bone or visceral involvement. In the latter cases, a thorough imaging work-up and better follow-up schedules are warranted. As KS is a chronic disease, the therapeutic goal is to obtain sustainable remission in cutaneous and visceral lesions and a good quality of life. Watc

[KAPOSI'S SARCOMA OF THE VULVA].

Kaposi's sarcoma represents multiple idiopathic hemorrhagic sarcoma--a mesenchymal tumor that affects the blood and lymph vessels. Its performance is associated with an infection with human herpes virus type 8--the so called KSHV (Kaposi's sarcoma -associated virus), and with the human immunodeficiency virus. Kaposi's sarcoma is considered as a typical clinical manifestation in male homosexuals suffering from acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), while his performance in HIV-positive women is unusual, with a ratio of men to women--10-15: 1. Vulvar localization is much rarer. It is up to
