Skewed Th1/Th2 immune response to Sarcoptes scabiei.

Scabies is a contagious skin disease of humans and many other species of mammals. Previous studies suggested that the balance between the Th1 and Th2 immune responses may influence the outcome of a scabies infestation in a sensitized host. Therefore, in this study, we examined the T-helper cell cytokine profiles of splenocytes and lymph node cells in BALB/c mice that were immunized with scabies extract (primary response), infested with scabies mites (primary response), or immunized and then infested (secondary response). Lymphocyte cytokine expression was analyzed by flow cytometry after stain

Efficacy of ivermectin against Sarcoptes scabiei in pigs.

The efficacy of orally administered ivermectin against Sarcoptes scabiei was investigated in pigs harbouring experimentally induced infections. Treatment at dosage rates of 300 and 500 microgram per kg body-weight provided 100% control as assessed by mite populations and clinical signs, while at a dose rate of 180 microgram per kg mite populations were substantially reduced but not eliminated.

Experimental Sarcoptes scabiei infestation in pigs: (1) pathogenesis.

Animals were experimentally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei var suis at weekly intervals between birth and five weeks of age. Excoriations were observed on the luminal surface of the ear seven days after the initial infestation. Encrusted lesions developed in the ears of all pigs between the third and eighth weeks but spontaneously regressed and disappeared by the 14th week. A generalised pruritus, accompanied by focal erythematous skin lesions developed in a majority of pigs between seven and 11 weeks of age. The presence of pruritus was associated with an eosinophilia and histological change

A Proteomic Analysis of Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae).

The pruritic skin disease scabies is caused by the burrowing of the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer). It is difficult to diagnose this disease because its symptoms often resemble those of other skin diseases. No reliable blood or molecular diagnostic test is available. The aim of this project was to begin to characterize the scabies proteome to identify scabies mite proteins, including those that may be useful in the development of a diagnostic test or vaccine. Various scabies mite extracts were separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis, and 844 Coomassie Blue-stained protein spots wer

Response of human skin equivalents to Sarcoptes scabiei.

Studies have shown that molecules in an extract made from bodies of the ectoparasitic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei De Geer, modulate cytokine secretion from cultured human keratinocytes and fibroblasts. In vivo, in the parasitized skin, these cells interact with each other by contact and cytokine mediators and with the matrix in which they reside. Therefore, these cell types may function differently together than they do separately. In this study, we used a human skin equivalent (HSE) model to investigate the influence of cellular interactions between keratinocytes and fibroblasts when the cells we

Biology, host relations, and epidemiology of Sarcoptes scabiei.

Scabies continues to be an important parasitic disease of humans, and other mammals. Suprisingly for a disease that has afflicted humans since antiquity, little is directly known about the basic biology of the parasite, the host-parasite interactions, the host immune response, and host susceptibility. Much more research in these areas is needed if we are to understand fully the occurrence, transmission, and epidemiology of both human and animal scabies.

A rare case of Norwegian scabies in a 16 years old female patient is reported. There also was Silver Roussel's syndrome and cellular immunologic deficiency. The case was confirmed at the biopsy, direct examination and immunologic examinations. Clinically, by erythema and adherent, abundant, whitish desquamation. The treatment resulted in a full recovery.

Facts, fiction, and figures of the Sarcoptes scabiei infection.

Today scabies, an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei variety hominis, is estimated to infect over 300 million humans worldwide. Scabies most frequently occurs among children and young adults. Outbreaks in child care facilities and schools are common. Scabies affects all socioeconomic classes and races. Students presenting with a possible outbreak of scabies in the school setting must be referred by the school nurse to a medical provider for diagnosis and treatment because scabies is highly contagious and can be spread by skin contact. This article will provide scho

Prevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in Patients with Suspected scabies.

OBJECTIVE: Scabies is caused by an ectoparasite called Sarcoptes scabiei (S. scabiei), which penetrates the epidermis through skin folds and burrows in the stratum corneum, following the development of tunnels (sillion). The disease is specifically characterised by keratosis, allergy and itching that increases at night-time. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of S. scabiei in patients with a pro-diagnosis of scabies. OBJECTIVE: Between January 2012 and December 2019, a total of 746 [n=388 (52%), female; n=358 (48%) male] patients aged 0-80 years were admitted to Fırat University Ho

A review of Sarcoptes scabiei: past, present and future.

The disease scabies is one of the earliest diseases of humans for which the cause was known. It is caused by the mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, that burrows in the epidermis of the skin of humans and many other mammals. This mite was previously known as Acarus scabiei DeGeer, 1778 before the genus Sarcoptes was established (Latreille 1802) and it became S. scabiei. Research during the last 40 years has tremendously increased insight into the mite's biology, parasite-host interactions, and the mechanisms it uses to evade the host's defenses. This review highlights some of the major advancements of ou

A DNA fingerprinting system for the ectoparasite Sarcoptes scabiei.

We describe multiple hypervariable microsatellites that will provide a highly informative genetic marker system for the sarcoptid mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Eighteen positive clones containing the highly repetitive sequence (GA)n were isolated from a partial genomic library of S. scabiei. Ten of these clones were characterised by sequencing and primers were designed from the unique sequences flanking eight microsatellite loci. Genomic DNA was subsequently extracted from individual mites and the repeat blocks were amplified by way of [gamma 33P] ATP end-labelled polymerase chain reaction. Fragment

Clinical evaluation of sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus).

Sarcoptic mange is a disease potentially threatening to Brazilian carnivores, especially maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Recently, an outbreak of sarcoptic mange has affected maned wolves in part of their range; therefore, it is a priority to assess the clinical manifestation of the disease. A total of 20 maned wolves were evaluated in Southeast Brazil, 12 of which from research projects and eight were rescued between 2008 and 2023. Since the clinical signs of the sarcoptic mange vary considerably, the maned wolves were classified according to the degree of clinical manifestation and the

Efficacy of Fluralaner in the Treatment of Sarcoptic Mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in 12 Pet Rabbits.

Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi are cutaneous mites of companion rabbits. In rabbits, sarcoptic mange is characterized by intense pruritus, alopecia, erythema, scales, and crusts around the head, neck, trunk, feet, and genitals. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of oral fluralaner in pet rabbits naturally infested by S scabiei var. cuniculi. Twelve privately owned pet rabbits with a definitive diagnosis of sarcoptic mange were included in the study if they had compatible clinical signs and positive superficial skin scrapings for S scabiei. Clinical and parasitological ev
