Pericyazine for schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Pericyazine is a 3-cyano-10 (3-4'-hydroxypiperidinopropyl) phenothiazine. It is overall pharmacologically similar with chlorpromazine, though particularly sedating. Dopamine receptor subtype analysis has not been performed for pericyazine, but the drug appears to induce greater noradrenergic than dopaminergic blockade. Compared to chlorpromazine, pericyazine reportedly has more potent antiemetic, antiserotonin, and anticholinergic activity. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical effects and safety of pericyazine in comparison with placebo, typical and atypical antipsychotic agents a

Complexity and schizophrenia.

Complexity estimators have been broadly utilized in schizophrenia investigation. Early studies reported increased complexity in schizophrenia patients, associated with a higher variability or "irregularity" of their brain signals. However, further investigations showed reduced complexities, thus introducing a clear divergence. Nowadays, both increased and reduced complexity values are reported. The explanation of such divergence is a critical issue to understand the role of complexity measures in schizophrenia research. Considering previous arguments a complementary hypothesis is advanced: if

[The etiology of schizophrenia].

Research conducted in recent years represents a new dawn of knowledge for the risk factors of schizophrenia, and genome-wide approaches have revolutionized the field of genetic mapping of schizophrenia. The aggregate genetic data increasingly support a combination of rare and common genetic variation in schizophrenia, a major role for polygenic inheritance, and a genetic overlap (pleiotropy) of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder and autism. A main challenge for the field is the translation of established genetic associations into a better pathophysiological

[Schizophrenia and toxoplasmosis].

Schizophrenia is one of the most severe and disabling psychiatric disease that affects about 1 % of the adult worldwide population. Aetiology of schizophrenia is still unknown but genetic and environmental factors are suspected to play a major role in its onset. Recent epidemiologic studies indicate that infectious agents may contribute to some cases of schizophrenia. In particular, several epidemiological, behavioural and neurochemical studies suggested the existence of an association between schizophrenia and past history of primo-infection by the Toxoplasma gondii. However, they are some li

Benzodiazepines for schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Many people with schizophrenia do not achieve a satisfactory treatment response with ordinary antipsychotic drug treatment. In these cases, various add-on medications are used, among them benzodiazepines. OBJECTIVES: To review the effects of benzodiazepines for the treatment of schizophrenia and schizophrenia-like psychoses. SEARCH STRATEGY: The reviewers searched the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's register (last search March 2005). This register is compiled by methodical searches of BIOSIS, CINAHL, Dissertation abstracts, EMBASE, LILACS, MEDLINE, PSYNDEX, PsycINFO, RUSSMED, Soci

Estrogen for schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In terms of clinical outcomes, women with schizophrenia seem to fare better then men, but appear more vulnerable to psychotic illness in the period after birth and menopause. As these vulnerable periods to psychosis are associated with estrogen withdrawal, this hormone has been proposed as a treatment for schizophrenia. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical effects of estrogens alone or in combination with progesterone, as a sole treatment or as an adjunctive therapy, for the treatment of schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like illnesses. Boundaries of schizophrenia.

The frontiers of schizophrenia are being increasingly challenged from several directions. In addition to ongoing debate as to divisions between schizophrenia and disorders of the schizophrenic spectrum, including schizotypal personality disorder and schizophreniform disorder, it has been suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder might overlap phenomenologically with schizophrenia. There has been a long debate around the relationship of schizophrenia to affective disorders, particularly bipolar and schizoaffective disorder. The evidence suggests that although schizotypal personality and schi

Thioridazine for schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Thioridazine is a piperidine phenothiazine used for the treatment of people with schizophrenia. It has often been considered the drug of choice in the elderly because of reputed lower levels of extrapyramidal adverse events. It may, however, be more likely to cause cognitive adverse events, such as delirium or worsening of memory, and, on rare occasions, thioridazine has caused pigmentary retinopathy. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of thioridazine for those with schizophrenia, and, in particular, elderly people with schizophrenia. SEARCH STRATEGY: Electronic searches of Biolo

Caffeine and schizophrenia.

Although the database is small and not completely consistent, it appears that patients with schizophrenia have high caffeine intakes. The reasons are unclear. In nonhumans, caffeine enhances the effects of dopamine, which might be expected to worsen positive symptoms and improve negative symptoms of schizophrenia and worsen tardive dyskinesia. Eliminating caffeine among patients with schizophrenia does not appear to make them better or worse. Acute intake of large amounts of caffeine may increase psychoses and hostility. However, those who chronically use large amounts of caffeine may develop

Perseveration in schizophrenia.

Perseveration in schizophrenia may take a variety of forms, which can be conceptualized as varying manifestations of an underlying neurocognitive deficit. Comparative studies have demonstrated higher than normal levels of perseverative responding among schizophrenia patients on capacity-demanding tasks, including prompted discourse, reversal learning, and the generation of guessing sequences. There is little evidence that perseveration is associated with deficit signs of schizophrenia. However, perseveration appears to covary with both positive thought disorder and voluntary motor disturbance.

Distractibility in schizophrenia.

This study examined the effects of neuroleptic medication on the allocation of attentional resources to distracting stimuli in patients with schizophrenia. Twenty-five patients were tested twice (medication-free and after medication stabilization) on the Identical Pairs versions of the Continuous Performance Test under both distraction and no-distraction conditions. Sixteen patients were chronically ill adults and nine patients were young neuroleptic-native patients in the early stages of illness. Results indicated that neuroleptic treatment did not improve distractibility for either group and

Neurosyphilis and schizophrenia.

Neurosyphilis continues to present in atypical forms, leading to erroneous diagnoses by physicians and psychiatrists. This patient, with a previous history of psychosis, presented in a catatonic state with rhabdomyolysis and renal failure. A subsequent breakdown was thought to be schizophrenic until unusual features led to a reassessment and discovery of neurosyphilis which was treated with penicillin and resulted in a remarkable clinical recovery.

Hallucinations in schizophrenia.

The prevalence of different types of hallucinations and their clinical correlates were examined in 117 DSM-III-R schizophrenic or schizoaffective disorder patients. Auditory hallucinations were by far the most common, followed by visual hallucinations, and then by tactile and olfactory or gustatory hallucinations. Auditory hallucinations were associated with an earlier age of first hospitalization among the schizophrenics. Global severity of the illness for schizophrenics was related to the presence of visual hallucinations, but not other types of hallucinations. Tactile and olfactory or gusta

Tiaspirone in schizophrenia.

It was predicted that tiaspirone, a novel compound, would benefit schizophrenic patients since in animal experiments it is a potent dopamine blocker. Following a placebo washout period of 1 to 2 weeks, 14 patients were treated for 28 days with the drug in a single-blind, dose ranging trial. GAS, NOSIE, and BPRS scores all showed significant improvement. No serious adverse effects were found. The absence of extrapyramidal symptoms was particularly encouraging since 10 of the 14 subjects had previously had them on other neuroleptics. Tiaspirone may represent a step forward in the search for a sa
