Recurrent Pulmonary Infection Caused by Schizophyllum commune: A Case Report and Management of Inflammation.

This case report documents a recurrent pulmonary infection caused by Schizophyllum commune in a 59-year-old woman with repeated admissions for cough and sputum production. Using mNGS on BALF, S. commune sequences were identified. The patient's clinical symptoms, lab results, and imaging features aligned with six criteria from Asano's assessment table, confirming ABPM. During treatment, bronchoscopic airway clearance, antifungal agents, and inhaled corticosteroids proved effective. The case highlights mNGS's role in diagnosing rare fungal infections and the need for individualised antifungal th

Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis due to Schizophyllum commune in a patient with chronic hepatitis B.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophyllum commune (S. commune) is an opportunistic pathogenic fungus and can cause infection of the respiratory system in immunocompromised hosts. Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) is the major disease caused by S. commune. However, identification of S. commune using routine mycological diagnostic methods is difficult. It is easy to make mistakes in diagnosis and treatment, resulting in deterioration of the disease. We report the first case of ABPM due to S. commune in a Chinese patient with chronic hepatitis B. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient presented cough, sputum a

Post-transplant Schizophyllum commune abscess in a pediatric patient with chronic granulomatous disease.

Schizophyllum commune is a widely distributed basidiomycete fungus that occasionally causes sinusitis or allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis. The invasive infection mostly occurs in immunocompromised adults. The number of reports on S. commune infection have increased in this decade due to the expansion of diagnostic techniques and awareness in clinical practice. However, S.commune infection in patients with primary immunodeficiencies has not been reported yet. Here, we described S. commune-abscesses developed in the brain and lung of a boy with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) after allogeni

Japanese Encephalitis Virus and Schizophyllum commune Co-Infection in a Harbor Seal in Japan.

The Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has a wide host range, extending from pigs and ardeid birds to opportunistic dead-end hosts, such as humans and horses. However, JEV encephalitis infections in aquatic mammals are rare, with only two cases in seals reported to date. Here, we report a lethal case of JEV and Schizophyllum commune co-infection in an aquarium-housed harbor seal in Japan. We isolated JEV from the brain of the dead seal and characterized its phylogeny and pathogenicity in mice. The virus isolate from the seal was classified as genotype GIb, which al

Successful management of nasopharyngitis caused by Schizophyllum commune in a captive cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus).

Herein, we describe the management of nasopharyngitis caused by Schizophyllum commune infection in a captive cheetah. Computed tomography revealed a nodule in the nasal cavity and pharynx, and an endoscopic biopsy was performed. As a result, the nodule was surgically resected because of a suspected carcinoma. However, the surgical specimen was histologically re-evaluated and a fungal granuloma was diagnosed. Sequence analysis of DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples revealed S. commune infection. The cheetah was administered fluconazole orally for 73 days. However, the drug was in

A favorable clinical effect of an expectorant in allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis caused by Schizophyllum commune.

An 80-year-old Japanese woman with wet cough and dyspnea was diagnosed with pneumonia at a clinic. Antibiotics did not improve her symptoms; therefore, she was referred to our hospital one month after symptom onset. Chest radiograph findings revealed complete collapse of the left lung. Bronchoscopy showed white mucus plug in the left main bronchus, which could not be removed. She was initially treated with bromhexine. Subsequently, culture results of the mucus plug specimen obtained during bronchoscopy yielded Schizophyllum commune. After three weeks, improvement of the collapsed lung was obse

Genetic transformation patterns along a longitude gradient in Ukrainian populations of Schizophyllum commune fungus.

The research of fungal biodiversity is important under global climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems. The most studies focusing on fungal biogeography oriented on species richness. There is a short supply researches on how genetic diversity shifts along a longitudinal gradient within one species. Model fungi with well-characterized genomes and simple cultivation requirements allow detailed research of evolutionary and ecological processes. The aim was to study the genetic profile transformation of the Schizophyllum commune populations by DNA microsatellite loci alon

Schizophyllum commune Exopolysaccharides Reduce Salmonella Gut Epithelial Invasion and Activate Macrophages Towards M1-Polarization.

Acute non-typhoidal salmonellosis (NTS) from non-typhoidal Salmonella remains a major cause of foodborne bacterial gastroenteritis, and non-antibiotic interventions are needed to combat multidrug-resistant NTS. Bioactive compounds from edible mushroom extracts have shown both direct and indirect antimicrobial activities on Salmonella. However, the variation in their antimicrobial activity could be due to several factors, including the extract's form and strain. This study investigated the ability of crude exopolysaccharides (EPs) produced by Schizophyllum commune CMU-01 to limit Salmonella inf

Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis caused by Schizophyllum commune in a patient with severe food allergy and asthma.

Schizophyllum commune is a basidiomycete. Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) is mainly caused by Aspergillus species; however, that caused by S. commune is occasionally found, especially in Japan. The patient was a 46-year-old female with a history of severe food allergies, asthma, and anaphylaxis. Atelectasis and bronchiectasis were observed in the left lower lobes of the lungs. The patients showed high levels of IgG and IgE against Aspergillus; however, anti-Asp f 1 IgE, Aspergillus antigen in serum, and Aspergillus species in respiratory specimen cultures were not detected. S. commune

Schizophyllum commune infection following chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy in a patient with lymphoma.

Infectious complications are common following chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy for B-cell lymphoma due to its prolonged immunosuppressive effects. Schizophyllum commune is an exceedingly rare fungal pathogen that typically affects the respiratory tract and may mimic chronic pulmonary aspergillosis. Infections caused by S. commune have been primarily reported in recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Here, we report the first known case of S. commune infection in a patient treated with CAR T-cell therapy. A 71-year-old woman with primary refractory large

Biopriming with Schizophyllum commune Polysaccharides Modulates Antioxidant and Biochemical Responses in Pisum sativum L. Seedlings.

This study investigated the biostimulant potential of endo- and exo-polysaccharides (PSHs) obtained from two Schizophyllum commune strains originating from Italy (ITA) and Serbia (SRB), with a primary focus on their ability to modulate the antioxidant defense and biochemical responses of Pisum sativum L. seedlings under optimal and drought conditions. The PSH fractions were structurally characterized by complementary spectroscopic and microscopic approaches, revealing strain- and drying-dependent differences in their structural features. The characterized PSHs were subsequently applied as seed

Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis in Schizophyllum commune with positive Aspergillus-specific IgE antibodies: A case report.

Schizophyllum commune is the third most common causative fungus of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis(ABPM). Two-thirds of ABPM caused by S. commune can be positive for Aspergillus fumigatus-specific IgE, which can be difficult to diagnose. Our patient presented to our hospital with wet cough for 3 months and chest pain for 3 days. Blood tests showed IgE 1522 IU/mL, eosinophils 688/mm3, A. fumigatus -specific IgE 2.24 UA/mL, and chest computed tomography showed high-attenuation mucus. Bronchoscopy showed mucus plugs and speculum examination showed filamentous fungi, but various culture tests di
