Teaching Dental Students About Incarceration and Correctional Dentistry: Results from a National Survey.

People who are incarcerated or have a history of incarceration have high rates of dental disease, but access to dental treatment is often a challenge during and after incarceration. Dental students' exposure to this population is unknown: no data exist regarding the number of schools that provide didactic and clinical training in correctional dentistry. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of instruction in correctional dentistry and clinical opportunities at correctional facilities for dental students in the U.S. A survey was distributed to the academic deans at all 66 U.S. dental s

Diagnostic accuracy of tele-dentistry in screening children for dental caries by community health workers in a lower-middle-income country.

BACKGROUND: Tele-dentistry can be useful for dental caries screening of children, especially in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). Manual Dexterity Admission Tests and Pre-Clinical Performance of Dentistry Students.

BACKGROUND: Dental school admissions typically include various forms of assessments including manual dexterity tests (MDT) and interviews. While MDTs have long been used, their value as predictors of pre-clinical performance in dental school remains unclear. In Singapore, the dental school admissions assessment comprises an MDT and the Multiple Mini Interviews. The MDT assesses psychomotor ability using a series of manual tasks. AIM: This commentary examined the relationship between MDT performance and pre-clinical technique performance of dental students in Paediatric Dentistry at the Nation

Enhancing Oral Health Knowledge Among Elementary School Teachers: Outcomes of A Quasi-Experimental Educational Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about oral health becomes essential, especially during school years when the prevalence of dental problems is high. The objective was to assess whether an educational intervention improves teachers' knowledge of oral health. METHODS: The sample was obtained through a census of elementary school teachers from public schools in Brazil. Dental education in Peru.

This paper provides information about Peru's dental history and dental school system, including the curriculum and dental licensure. With the increase in the number of dental schools in Peru, the number of dentists is also increasing. Until 1965, Peru had only three dental schools; currently, there are 14. Four of these dental schools are public, and ten are private. A five- or six-year dental program leads to the B.D.S. degree. After successful completion of a thesis defense or competency examination, the D.D.S. degree is awarded. The D.D.S. is mandatory for practicing dentistry in Peru. Curr

The use of CDA best management practices and amalgam separators to improve the management of dental wastewater.

Concerns over the persistence and effects of mercury in the environment, particularly in wastewater, have increased significantly over the past decade. Because mercury is a component of dental amalgam, comprising about 50 percent of amalgam among other metals, in recent years the concern has affected dental practices and even educational curricula in the dental schools. While numbers vary widely from area to area, on average, it is estimated dentistry contributes less than 1 percent of the mercury generated from human activity to the environment. Despite dentistry's low contribution to the env

Noise levels in dental school clinics.

UNLABELLED: Prolonged exposure to noise is a little-investigated occupational hazard in dentistry. There is anecdotal evidence suggesting that noise levels in four student clinics at the School of Dentistry are higher than the current occupational noise level guidelines in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom, which suggest that levels should not exceed 85 dB (A) over a duration of 8 hours. The objectives of this study were to (1) measure the noise levels in the student clinics, and (2) determine whether they exceed current guidelines for occupational noise levels. METHOD: A noise le

Jonathan Taft: dentistry's great forgotten hero.

One of the greatest figures in the development of the dental profession to the high status it enjoys today is all but forgotten. Jonathan Taft was dean of the second dental school in the world and wrote the most important clinical textbook of his time, one that was reprinted in many editions over a quarter of a century. Later appointed dean of the new University of Michigan Dental School, he instituted innovations in admission requirements and course of study that were copied by all subsequent schools and are the standards adhered to today. The editor of one of the most important dental journa

Psychometric analysis of a KAP questionnaire on green dentistry using PLS-SEM and EFA: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Green dentistry promotes sustainable practices in oral healthcare. As environmental challenges intensify, integrating eco-friendly principles into dental education and practice becomes increasingly important. To advance sustainability in oral health settings, it is crucial to comprehend the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of dental professionals and students. Despite growing interest, there is scarcity of research on green dentistry and a lack of standardized, validated tools to measure KAP makes it more difficult to compare studies. The rationale for this study was to co

Education of dentists in China.

China is geographically located in the east of Asia and its population exceeds 1.3 billion. An understanding of dental education in China is thus of interest. However, as there is little published information on this topic, this paper provides information about China regarding its dental history, dental school system including curriculum and dental licensure. High school graduates take a nationwide entrance examination to apply for dental school, of which there are more than 50 in China. A five year dental education leads to the BDS degree. Dental school graduates must then pass the nationwide
