This commentary highlights three themes from the stories contained within this issue of Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics. First, we discuss differing perceptions of school nurses' roles and responsibilities. Administrators, parents, and nurses often have different understandings of nurses' roles. We explain why these differences may lead to confusion and conflict. Second, we describe the respective pressures that parents and school nurses often face. Doing so should help parents and nurses better understand one another's views. Third, we explore ways in which parents and nurses sometimes disagre

Child abuse recognition and the protection of children is a global concern. In Sweden, the role of the school nurse (SN) is to promote schoolchildren's health and development and to identify and prevent harm. The aim of this study was to describe Swedish SN experiences of suspecting, identifying, and reporting child abuse and to compare them with respect to (a) years of experience as SN, (b) age of SN, and (c) pupil population size. A descriptive design was used. Two-hundred and thirty-three SNs completed a survey detailing their experiences. Most SNs (96%) reported having suspected a child su

The treatment of Pediculosis capitis, or head lice, is fraught with misinformation, myths, and mismanagement. Common myths include the need to exclude children from school, the need to remove all visible nits ("no-nit" policies), the need for massive environmental cleaning, that head lice live for long periods of time, and that schools are a common location for lice transmission. Head lice are a common childhood nuisance, causing embarrassment and emotional trauma in both children and families. This article explores and challenges the commonly held beliefs about the identification, management,

In this article the authors address the dilemma confronting school nurses in determining whether or not to counsel parents about seeking medical care for a child with a sore throat. The use of a clinical scorecard in the school setting as an aid in predicting streptococcal pharyngitis is investigated. The authors conclude that the only valid solution to the dilemma is the availability of the throat culture to schools. Using the culture as an additional assessment tool augments those already proven over time--the stethoscope, scoliosis and vision screening, and the otoscope.

Evidence-based practices in concussion management (CM) have been codified into legislation. However, legislation is varied, and implementation is narrowly evaluated. School nurses hold a unique position to assess the implementation of health policies. The implementation of concussion management policies across Massachusetts high schools was evaluated by the school nurse. A cross-sectional survey was sent to school nurses (N = 304), and responses (n = 201; 68.1% response rate) were tallied whereby higher scores indicated more practices being implemented. One open-text question was included to e

School nurses may encounter a variety of poisoning and overdose scenarios in the school setting. Youth have an increased risk for harm due to factors associated with substance use, self-harm, and exposure to more toxic ingestants. Poison Control Centers are uniquely qualified to assist the public and health professionals, including school nurses, with poisoning and overdose incidents and are available 24 hours per day. This article is Part 2 of a series of three articles and focuses on poisonings related to substances of abuse and addiction or as a result of social media challenges. Informatio

Zero-tolerance school disciplinary policies have contributed to the proliferation of exclusionary practices, which increase the risk that minoritized students will be harmed by the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP). The purpose of this review was to explore factors that influence the STPP and highlight the role school nurses can play in protecting students from this public health crisis. We used a systematic mixed-studies review method, and 14 studies were included. Exclusionary discipline disproportionately affects minoritized students, but decreased student-teacher ratios, wellness-focused en

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder and carries the risk of causing serious complications and/or death in the patient. In the school environment, diabetic students need monitoring and support to ensure their health. Teacher perceptions can impact T1D management in schools by influencing their preparedness, support strategies, and response to emergencies. The aim of this study was to assess attitudes and perceptions of teachers regarding the role of a school nurse in the management of students with T1DM in the school environment.

Although all states have legislation pertaining to youth sports concussion, most of these laws focus on return-to-play procedures; only a few address return-to-learn (RTL) accommodations for students who have experienced a concussion. To address this gap in the legislation, some states and nongovernmental organizations have developed RTL guidelines to advise school personnel, parents, and health care providers on best practices for accommodating students' postconcussion reintegration into academic activity. In 2018, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) developed RTL guidelines

A school nurse has many obstacles to overcome when providing emergency care for an age group ranging from four to adulthood. The 21st century school nurse faces the challenges of providing care to medically fragile children at multiple sites, with high student-nurse ratios. The implementation of an Automated External Defibrillation (AED) program can assist the school nurse and staff in providing necessary life-saving services for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) victims of all ages. The purpose of this article is to describe AED program implementation in a school setting, including the need, essent

BACKGROUND: Schools are important settings for delivering vaccines. It is unknown how facilitators of and barriers to implementing school-associated vaccination events (SAVEs) vary by school- and community-level characteristics.
METHODS: We fielded a web-based survey of school nurses that worked in Colorado public schools in Fall 2024 to assess perceived implementation facilitators and barriers. We linked survey responses (n = 368) to publicly available data and conducted descriptive analyses.
RESULTS: Key facilitators identified by nurses that held SAVEs between 2018 and 2024 included paren

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases are common among schoolchildren, and appropriate management within school settings is essential. This study aimed to assess the adequacy of schools' preparedness for managing allergic reactions by investigating both actual cases and measures in place via a cross-sectional survey.
METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted in all public schools in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Data were collected on students' allergic diseases, allergy management training, and allergic reactions that occurred at school. Further analysis was conducted to identify factors associated wi

Recognition is an important yet often underutilized strategy for supporting nurse engagement, professional fulfillment, and work sustainability. As school nurses continue to address increasingly complex student health needs, opportunities to celebrate their contributions remain limited. To address this gap, Highline Public Schools launched a districtwide recognition initiative through The DAISY Award program, becoming the first in Washington State to do so. The inaugural year, 2025 to 2026 school year, generated widespread participation from diverse members of the school community and produced

Although nursing is consistently ranked among the most trusted professions, its role is often overlooked or misunderstood. School nurses earn credibility and trust through daily practice: credentials establish expertise, while professional conduct makes it visible. By presenting themselves professionally, school nurses affirm their role and build stronger relationships with staff, students, and families, making them the first point of contact for health questions or crises. Using the three elements of professional comportment-actions, presence, and words-this article offers practical strategie

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD risk factors, including obesity and hypertension, are increasingly prevalent among children and youth, highlighting the need for early sustained prevention. Positioned at the intersection of health and education, school nurses are uniquely equipped to support cardiovascular health in everyday practice.
PURPOSE: We propose a collaborative model linking school nurses with the cardiovascular nursing community, drawing on the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 for Kids framework, the National Association of School Nurses School Nursing

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize existing evidence on school-based strategies related to resilience in nursing students.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and the recommendations of the Joanna's Briggs Institute (JBI). The search timeframe is restricted to the period from each database's inception to October 2025 to ensure comprehensive coverage of relevant literature. We searched the following databases: Embase, CINAHL, WOS, PubMed, and Wiley. A total of 1679 articles were identified from the initial search. Duplicates we
