Factors influencing elementary school teachers' ratings of ADHD and ODD behaviors.

Examined factors that influence teachers' ratings of children with either attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). 105 teachers watched 2 videotapes--1 depicting a normal child and the other a child with either ADHD or ODD--and rated each child using 2 different questionnaires. Results indicated that teachers accurately rated the child on the ADHD versus ODD tape as having significantly more inattention and hyperactivity but significantly less oppositionality. However, effect sizes indicated the presence of a unidirectional, negative halo effect o

Mortality among female registered nurses and school teachers in British Columbia.

The mortality profile of female nurses and teachers in British Columbia (BC) was examined using age-standardized proportional mortality ratios (PMRs) calculated for the period 1950-1984. Lowered overall mortality among nurses was seen for degenerative heart disease and for cerebrovascular accidents. Significantly elevated PMR values were observed for cancer of the breast and ovary in nurses of age 20-65 years. PMRs were significantly elevated for cancer of the pancreas and leukemia among those age 20 years and older. Elevated values were also observed for motor vehicle accidents and suicide am

WhySchool project: effects of a school-based mental health literacy programme on teachers and school health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health is a growing public health concern due to the high prevalence of mental disorders, many of which remain unrecognised and untreated. AIMS: This study evaluated the effects of the WhySchool project, a school-based programme to promote MHL among teachers and school health professionals (SHPs). METHOD: We implemented WhySchool in 72 public middle and h
