OBJECTIVE: We examined the occupational performance issues facing young U.S. veterans (aged 20-29 yr) who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Perceived challenges in occupational performance, the most common mental health and brain injuries of war, and motivations for participation in daily occupations upon return to civilian life were identified.
METHOD: Thirty young veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom were interviewed using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (Law et al., 2005). They were also screened for posttraumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain

Hairdressers are occupationally exposed to many substances both, allergizing and irritating. The continuous development of hairdressing services brings about new risks. The most important allergens are: persulfates (ammonium and potassium), paraphenylenediamine, and latex. A growing number of occupational allergens in the work environment of hairdresses, providing that most of them are low weight allergens, may cause some diagnostic problems. Health risks related with haidressing occupation, have prompted the researchers to pay more attention to risk factors of occupational allergy. Owing to t

BACKGROUND: Parental exposures to chemicals, and the interplay between chemical exposures in utero and in infancy leading to respiratory disease in childhood, are not yet fully understood. In this study we investigated the impact of chemical exposures to the parent in occupational settings and to the child in the home and children's respiratory health.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of lung function and respiratory health was conducted in primary school children in the Kwinana industrial area, south of Perth, Western Australia. Respiratory health was assessed using a standardized questionna

BACKGROUND: Occupational accidents among teachers are a cause of concern because of their consequences regarding several parts of the body, such as the neck, back, or extremities; however, the number of studies on this issue is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the possible effects of different variables (gender, age, nationality, experience, sector, day of the week, traffic accidents) associated with occupational injuries suffered by teachers.
METHODS: All teachers' accidents recorded in Spain (136,702) from 2003 to 2018 were analyzed. Odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval were calculated

The curriculum of Italian Medical School of the Faculty of Medicine has been recently renewed at a national level. Considering the numerous innovations introduced, a new role has been attributed to the teaching of occupational health, particularly occupational medicine. Occupational Medicine is usually regarded as a part of community medicine and, despite the fact that occupational disease may be in decline in industrially developed countries, the increasing concern regarding environmental pollution related health effects, stress the relevance of the methodologies already formulated within the

BACKGROUND: Most schools in Ibadan, Nigeria, are located near major roads (mobile line sources). We conducted an initial assessment of noise levels and adverse noise-related health and learning effects.
METHODS: For this descriptive, cross-sectional study, four schools were selected randomly from eight participating in overall project. We administered 200 questionnaires, 50 per school, assessing health and learning-related outcomes. Noise levels (A-weighted decibels, dBA) were measured with calibrated sound level meters. Traffic density was assessed for school with the highest measured dBA. O

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) structured admissions interview and other student measures predict success on the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB) examinations.
METHODS: An independent researcher combined CMCC and CCEB data by student name and then anonymized the data and destroyed the linking information. Backward stepwise multiple linear regressions were applied to external dependent variables from the CCEB and internal independent variables from the CMCC.
RESULTS: Forty percent of the variance in the basi

INTRODUCTION: Even though the majority of youth in the U.S. work, and workers under the age of 18 are seriously injured on the job at higher rates when compared to adults, most adolescents lack instruction on workplace safety and health.
METHOD: This qualitative study examines the extent to which selected U.S. school districts provide workplace safety and health instruction to students and explores the factors that influence districts' decision to adopt a free, foundational occupational safety and health (OSH) curriculum.
RESULTS: Results from key informant interviews conducted with a purpos

BACKGROUND: The promotion of health literacy is seen as an urgent goal in public health and education and, hence, should be integrated in the school context as a component of the holistic health promoting school (HPS) approach. However, only limited empirical studies have addressed health literacy of school staff so far. Hence, this study aimed to examine the level of health literacy among school leaders and its association with the extent of HPS implementation.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study with n = 680 school principals and members of the school management board from Germany was carried

BACKGROUND: The great majority of mental disorders begin during adolescence or early adulthood, although they are often detected and treated later in life. To compare mental health status of college students and their non-college-attending peers whether working, attending a secondary school, or non-college-attending peers who are neither employed nor students or trainees (NENST) will allow to focus on high risk group.

Schools in the health sector play a significant role in the structure of the German education system. In addition to public schools, there are numerous schools, either substitute or supplementary, in the private sector. Many schools are directly attached to a hospital, in contrast to others operating financially independently having cooperation agreements with corresponding facilities for practical training. This article explains the differences between public, substitute and supplementary schools in the health care sector, with particular emphasis on their financing. It also shows the impact

OBJECTIVES: Global, COVID-driven restrictions around face-to-face interviews for healthcare student selection have forced admission staff to rapidly adopt adapted online systems before supporting evidence is available. We have developed, what we believe is, the first automated interview grounded in multiple mini-interview (MMI) methodology. This study aimed to explore test-retest reliability, acceptability and usability of the system.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Multimethod feasibility study in Physician Associate programmes from two UK and one US university during 2019-2020.
