Parents' Perspectives on the Role and Value of School Nurses.

This commentary highlights three themes from the stories contained within this issue of Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics. First, we discuss differing perceptions of school nurses' roles and responsibilities. Administrators, parents, and nurses often have different understandings of nurses' roles. We explain why these differences may lead to confusion and conflict. Second, we describe the respective pressures that parents and school nurses often face. Doing so should help parents and nurses better understand one another's views. Third, we explore ways in which parents and nurses sometimes disagre

Swedish School Nurses' Experiences of Child Abuse.

Child abuse recognition and the protection of children is a global concern. In Sweden, the role of the school nurse (SN) is to promote schoolchildren's health and development and to identify and prevent harm. The aim of this study was to describe Swedish SN experiences of suspecting, identifying, and reporting child abuse and to compare them with respect to (a) years of experience as SN, (b) age of SN, and (c) pupil population size. A descriptive design was used. Two-hundred and thirty-three SNs completed a survey detailing their experiences. Most SNs (96%) reported having suspected a child su

Demystifying pediculosis: school nurses taking the lead.

The treatment of Pediculosis capitis, or head lice, is fraught with misinformation, myths, and mismanagement. Common myths include the need to exclude children from school, the need to remove all visible nits ("no-nit" policies), the need for massive environmental cleaning, that head lice live for long periods of time, and that schools are a common location for lice transmission. Head lice are a common childhood nuisance, causing embarrassment and emotional trauma in both children and families. This article explores and challenges the commonly held beliefs about the identification, management,

Integrating bioterrorism education into nursing school curricula.

Due to the events of September 11, 2001 and the bioterrorism-related anthrax episodes, the United States has escalated efforts to better prepare the nation for terrorist attacks. Early recognition and management of a biological attack are largely dependent on the clinical expertise of frontline health care personnel. Nurses are recognized as an integral part of this team. Schools of nursing should integrate bioterrorism education into their curricula to address this growing frontier of health care management. This article outlines the necessary components of bioterrorism education for nurses,

[Tuberculin skin testing in students of school of nursing].

Tuberculin skin testing in students of the School of Nursing Attached to National Hiroshima Hospital was analyzed. On initial test using 0.05 microgram of PPDs, diameter of erythema in 26.7% of 300 new students were less than 9 mm. Twelve of 24 who were tested by two-step method reacted more than 10 mm on the second test. Twenty-seven non-reactors who were vaccinated with BCG all reacted more than 10 mm after 9 to 16 weeks after vaccination. They might be vaccinated in the past by insufficient technique and better be revaccinated. Thirty-one of 49 students who graduated in 1998 were tested and

A review for school nursing professionals: adolescent depression.

Adolescent depression occurs within various developmental, social, and biologic contexts, and is manifested by traditional depressive symptoms such as fatigue, loss of interest in daily activities, weight changes, sleep disturbances, sad moods, difficulty with concentration, behavioral agitation or lethargy, feelings of worthlessness, and recurrent thoughts of death. Depressed adolescents may combine these symptoms with certain additional behaviors such as academic deterioration, substance abuse, sexual activity, somatic complaints, eating disorders, conduct disorders, and other risk-taking be

Eating disorders: a framework for school nursing initiatives.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are complex illnesses identified with increased frequency among adolescents, particularly adolescent females. Eating disorders can have serious health consequences and school nurses can play an important role in primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. An overview of eating disorders within a theoretical framework for school nursing practice is presented, and a case management role within an educational setting is proposed for school nurses. Etiology, classification, and signs and symptoms are highlighted for application in schools. Recommendations are

Prediction of streptococcal pharyngitis: an option for school nurses?

In this article the authors address the dilemma confronting school nurses in determining whether or not to counsel parents about seeking medical care for a child with a sore throat. The use of a clinical scorecard in the school setting as an aid in predicting streptococcal pharyngitis is investigated. The authors conclude that the only valid solution to the dilemma is the availability of the throat culture to schools. Using the culture as an additional assessment tool augments those already proven over time--the stethoscope, scoliosis and vision screening, and the otoscope.

Implementation of Concussion Management Policies in High Schools: The Critical Role of School Nurses.

Evidence-based practices in concussion management (CM) have been codified into legislation. However, legislation is varied, and implementation is narrowly evaluated. School nurses hold a unique position to assess the implementation of health policies. The implementation of concussion management policies across Massachusetts high schools was evaluated by the school nurse. A cross-sectional survey was sent to school nurses (N = 304), and responses (n = 201; 68.1% response rate) were tallied whereby higher scores indicated more practices being implemented. One open-text question was included to e

A Mixed-Studies Review of the School-to-Prison Pipeline and a Call to Action for School Nurses.

Zero-tolerance school disciplinary policies have contributed to the proliferation of exclusionary practices, which increase the risk that minoritized students will be harmed by the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP). The purpose of this review was to explore factors that influence the STPP and highlight the role school nurses can play in protecting students from this public health crisis. We used a systematic mixed-studies review method, and 14 studies were included. Exclusionary discipline disproportionately affects minoritized students, but decreased student-teacher ratios, wellness-focused en

An Evaluation of Post-Concussion Return to School Guidelines: A Survey of Massachusetts School Nurses.

Although all states have legislation pertaining to youth sports concussion, most of these laws focus on return-to-play procedures; only a few address return-to-learn (RTL) accommodations for students who have experienced a concussion. To address this gap in the legislation, some states and nongovernmental organizations have developed RTL guidelines to advise school personnel, parents, and health care providers on best practices for accommodating students' postconcussion reintegration into academic activity. In 2018, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) developed RTL guidelines

Implementing School-Associated Vaccination Events in Colorado Public Schools: A Statewide Survey of Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Schools are important settings for delivering vaccines. It is unknown how facilitators of and barriers to implementing school-associated vaccination events (SAVEs) vary by school- and community-level characteristics. METHODS: We fielded a web-based survey of school nurses that worked in Colorado public schools in Fall 2024 to assess perceived implementation facilitators and barriers. We linked survey responses (n = 368) to publicly available data and conducted descriptive analyses. RESULTS: Key facilitators identified by nurses that held SAVEs between 2018 and 2024 included paren

Beyond the Nurse's Office: How School Nurses can Build Trust and Transform Perceptions.

Although nursing is consistently ranked among the most trusted professions, its role is often overlooked or misunderstood. School nurses earn credibility and trust through daily practice: credentials establish expertise, while professional conduct makes it visible. By presenting themselves professionally, school nurses affirm their role and build stronger relationships with staff, students, and families, making them the first point of contact for health questions or crises. Using the three elements of professional comportment-actions, presence, and words-this article offers practical strategie
