Global pen pal education intervention among student pharmacists: A pilot project.

INTRODUCTION: Global health, a practice that prioritizes improving health and achieving health equity for all people worldwide, is a priority for pharmacists, schools, and pharmacy colleges. Several initiatives aim to enhance faculty and student exchanges while promoting projects and initiatives among thriving universities and under-resourced countries and institutions. While many organizations recognize the benefit of global collaboration, as demonstrated by the adoption of the 2012 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Strategic Plan, which calls for increased global experiences for f

Accommodating Pharmacy Students With Physical Disabilities During the Experiential Learning Curricula.

Accommodating pharmacy students with physical disabilities during the experiential learning portion of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum can present unique challenges for pharmacy schools. The available literature regarding accommodations for pharmacy students in the experiential learning environment is sparse, leaving programs with little guidance. This commentary from the Big Ten Academic Alliance calls on the Academy to create a community of shared resources and best practice examples and offers practical suggestions for accommodating pharmacy students with mobility, vision, and au

Reflections on work-life integration post-pandemic: A perspective from pharmacy practice faculty.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of COVID-19 will have a lasting impact on how work is conducted moving forward. Prior to the pandemic, work-life integration and well-being were priorities for many organizations, including pharmacy. The disruption associated with the COVID-19 pandemic pushed businesses and organizations worldwide into an era of agility and flexibility previously unknown to the majority of workplaces. PERSPECTIVE: Increased remote work has presented both increased challenges (e.g., engagement) and opportunities (e.g., productivity). After a year of experience, this shift in the natur

A Reflective Approach to Enhancing Didactic Remediation.

Approaches to remediation have become increasingly important as the Academy responds to continued admissions pressures and progression monitoring by various accreditation bodies. Remediation is often driven by multifaceted issues, including enrollment numbers, academic preparedness, learner resiliency, efficacy of online delivery, graduation rates, and licensure examination success. Attitudes toward remediation may differ among faculty and students, and perspectives vary widely depending on the stakeholder group and across institutions. Each program has nuances and critical issues that make th

Students' versus residency programs' perceptions of a high-quality PGY1 residency applicant.

INTRODUCTION: Securing a pharmacy residency position is highly competitive, and pharmacy students must work throughout pharmacy school to ensure their applications are as competitive as possible. Several surveys asking residency programs to describe the most crucial qualities of a high-quality residency candidate have been conducted. However, no study has investigated whether congruency exists between pharmacy students' and residency programs' perceptions of these sought-after qualities. METHODS: We surveyed pharmacy students to compare their perceptions of important qualities of residency ca

Attitudes of experiential education directors regarding tobacco sales in pharmacies in the USA.

OBJECTIVES: Accreditation guidelines in the USA suggest that experiential sites for pharmacy students should demonstrate 'a strong commitment to health promotion and illness prevention'; however, most community pharmacies sell tobacco products. This study aimed to determine the proportion of students rotating through advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) sites where tobacco is sold and experiential education directors' perception regarding the sales of tobacco in APPE sites. METHODS: A brief survey was distributed by mail to experiential education directors at US pharmacy schools. The

Academic accommodation strategies for pharmacy students with learning disabilities: What else can be done?

INTRODUCTION: Colleges and schools of pharmacy in the US are faced with the challenge of providing appropriate academic accommodations for students with learning disabilities (SLD) including those with dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia. Although there are no population statistics about SLD in pharmacy schools, current data show that their number at higher education institutions across the US has increased. This commentary discusses how the rigorous pharmacy school curriculum affects SLD and proposes creative and innovative measures to overcome these obstacles. PERSPECTIVE: The shift in the

Could recruiting former college athletes be the answer to less pharmacy student burnout?

INTRODUCTION: Student pharmacists are in a notable wellness deficit. Pharmacy organizations are issuing statements and providing resources addressing efforts to increase student wellness. This commentary suggests that institutions refocus recruiting efforts on students with experience balancing the demands of school, wellness, and mental health. PERSPECTIVE: The purpose of this commentary is to start the conversation on increasing efforts to recruit candidates who already possess the resilience needed to perform in pharmacy school, with a focus on former college athletes. Flexible Work Arrangements in Pharmacy Academia: An Overdue Imperative.

The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally altered how faculty and staff in higher education, including schools and colleges of pharmacy, experience their work. As pharmacy schools navigate a postpandemic landscape marked by increasing workloads, workforce attrition, and growing burnout, the question of how to define, implement, and equitably distribute flexible work arrangements (FWAs) has become urgent and complex. This commentary examines FWAs in pharmacy academic settings: what they are, why they matter, and how they can be implemented in ways that serve the full workforce. We intentionally exten

Preparing pharmacy students and pharmacists to provide tobacco cessation counselling.

ISSUES: Tobacco use and abuse is a major health risk for people across the world and is responsible for nearly 500 000 deaths in the USA annually. Currently, the accepted role of pharmacists is the provision of pharmaceutical care, which includes health promotion and prevention of disease. Pharmacists should work collaboratively with other health-care professionals to provide tobacco-cessation counselling to smokers. APPROACH: Recently, in the USA, a curriculum has been developed by faculty at a school of pharmacy and distributed to pharmacy schools across the nation in a train-the-trainer fo
