Public health response to an outbreak of meningococcal B disease in a secondary school in Far North Queensland.

This article describes the public health response to an outbreak of meningococcal B disease, linked to a secondary school in Far North Queensland. Tropical Public Health Services in Cairns were notified of three cases of meningococcal disease in the same week in May 2022. The cases occurred in individuals who all attended, or worked in, the same secondary school. All cases were serogroup B and shared the same molecular genotype. The public health response included prompt provision of information, distribution of clearance antibiotics and two doses of MenB-4C vaccine to the entire staff and stu

Longitudinal relationships among exclusionary school discipline, adolescent substance use, and adult arrest: Public health implications of the school-to-prison pipeline.

PURPOSE: Exclusionary school discipline is an initiating component of the school-to-prison pipeline that is racialized and may lead to short- and long-term negative substance use and criminal legal outcomes. However, these impacts, and racial disparities therein, have not been well explored empirically at the individual-level. PROCEDURES: We analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (1995-2009). We fit survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression models to estimate reciprocal relationships between exclusionary discipline and adolescent substance use

[Mental health and mental health literacy among novice teachers working in public elementary and junior high schools in a Japanese regional city: A cross-sectional study].

OBJECTIVES: Mental health problems among schoolteachers are an increasing concern in Japan, with rising sickness absence and early turnover among younger teachers. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of key mental health indicators (psychological distress, insomnia, and burnout); characterize mental health literacy (depression stigma and recognition, help-seeking attitudes, and knowledge about mental illness) and perceived workplace climate; and examine factors associated with these indicators among novice teachers in public elementary and junior high schools in City A, Japan. METHODS: An ano

Developing and Operationalizing an Academic Health Department Partnership: A Collaboration Between UTHealth Houston School of Public Health and Dallas County Health and Human Services.

CONTEXT: Academic Health Department (AHD) partnerships are increasingly recognized as a mechanism for strengthening public health education, workforce development, and applied research. While many schools of public health and local health departments have collaborated informally for decades, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed both the value and limitations of these informal arrangements. In Texas, sustained pandemic response efforts required frequent, high-stakes coordination between academic institutions and local health authorities, underscoring the need for more intentional and structured academ

Public health unit engagement in school mental health programs and adolescent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: COMPASS, 2018-2022.

BACKGROUND: Public health unit (PHU) engagement in schools is important for promoting wellness in students. We aimed to investigate if PHU engagement with schools may have provided protection against the risk of depression and anxiety in students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from the Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Alcohol use, Smoking and Sedentary behaviour survey between the 2018/19 and 2020/21 academic years. Multilevel models were used to assess the association between PHU engagement with school mental health programs prior to the

Recovery and Response: Responding to Mental Health Needs That Emerged in the Wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Chicago Public Schools.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic elevated mental health needs among students. As such, in 2022 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) introduced the Comprehensive Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Policy to deliver mental health awareness and services to all pK-12th grade students. While transitioning back to in-person learning, an evaluation was conducted in the 2022-2023 school year to identify current practices and barriers of delivery, and identify lessons learned to support the policy in schools. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 30 staff members who delivered mental health services. Int

Systemic review of the relative age effect in Scottish schooling: a public health imperative for policy reform and equity.

OBJECTIVES: The relative age effect (RAE) is where an individual's age relative to their age-banded cohort influences various outcomes and has a globally observed pattern impacting health, academic performance and psychosocial development. Scotland's unique school commencement laws have resulted in extended schooling cohorts spanning up to 19 months, thus exacerbating RAE and subsequently widening health inequities. This research synthesises evidence to delineate the public health problem posed by RAE in the Scottish educational context and proposes evidence-based policy interventions. DESIGN

The Medical School Admissions Process and Meeting the Public's Health Care Needs: Never the Twain Shall Meet?

Medical schools typically assess how good their selection process is using metrics such as students' assessment performance and the success of alumni on later indicators of academic ability and clinical competence, such as Royal College of Physicians or specialty board examinations. Addressing global issues with the maldistribution of doctors and increasing numbers of new medical school graduates choosing not to work in a clinical context requires different measurements of medical school admissions processes, like those related to graduates' career outcomes (e.g., working in underserved region

Public health risk communication by text message in response to a cluster of invasive meningococcal infection in a primary school.

Public health risk communication during emergencies should be rapid and accurate in order to allow the audience to take steps to prevent adverse outcomes. Delays to official communications may cause unnecessary anxiety due to uncertainty or inaccurate information circulating within the at-risk group. Modern electronic communications present opportunities for rapid, targeted public health risk communication. We present a case report of a cluster of invasive meningococcal disease in a primary school in which we used the school's mass short message service (SMS) text message system to inform pare

Bone health, obesity, and multimorbidity risk among teachers in under-resourced South African public primary schools: results from a cross-sectional DXA study.

INTRODUCTION: In low- and middle-income countries, adverse body composition risk is increasingly driven by structural determinants, including rapid urbanisation, nutrition transitions, and reduced opportunities for physical activity. Quantifying and interpreting bone, fat and lean mass risks require appropriate measurement and context-sensitive thresholds to detect subclinical vulnerability in under-resourced settings. Few studies, particularly from Africa, have quantified how these risks intersect and cluster with cardiometabolic and socio-demographic determinants. The purpose of this study w

Anemia Awareness Program in a Suburban Middle School: A Pilot Study Promoting Students as Public Health Advocates in Their Community.

INTRODUCTION: Almost a quarter of the people on earth are anemic, and most of them reside in regions of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Anemia in children is linked with impaired cognitive and motor development and affects the future earning capacity. The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency. The Indian Government has initiated multiple programs for the eradication of anemia. The prevalence of anemia has not decreased despite the improvements in the country's economy. It increased from 58.7% in 2015-16 to 67.1% in 2019-21 in children and from 50.4% in 2015-16 to 52.2% in 2019-21 i
