[Tityus asthenes scorpion stings: epidemiological, clinical and toxicological aspects].

INTRODUCTION: Scorpion stings are a public health problem in many countries. However, in Colombia, very few epidemiological, clinical or toxicological studies have been undertaken. OBJECTIVE: Ecological and epidemiological aspects were related to the prevalence of scorpion stings by Tityus asthenes. The clinical features of envenomization were described in patients and in an experimental animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in four localities of Mutatá and Urabá Counties in the province of Antioquia, Colombia. The sample consisted of 1,593 (929 urban, 664 rural) of th…

Penis wound by scorpion sting.

CONTEXT: The majority of scorpion stings are oligosymptomatic, occurring mainly on the hands and feet. Fatality is rare. CASE REPORT: A 33-year old man suffered a severe sting on his penis from a scorpion of the species Tytius trivittatus. Alcohol and salt were used without success in an effort to relieve pain. Medical assistance was sought 4 hours after the event, at which time diffuse erythema, edema and punctiform injury on the glans penis were observed, with no systemic manifestation. Intravenous meperidine was administered with immediate relief of the pain. The local signs disappeared wi…

Scorpion sting: a management problem.

Admissions for scorpion sting in 1 year and deaths resulting from scorpion sting over 3 years were analysed. Features that indicated the severity of the clinical condition were identified. Pulmonary oedema and shock were the usual causes of death. Poor management of fluid therapy was responsible for the frequently unsatisfactory resolution of envenoming, especially when purified human plasma was used. The role of the scorpion antivenom used is questioned and controversy regarding the most appropriate sedative to use in the management of scorpion sting is still not resolved. An in-depth study o

Ethnomedicines for the treatment of scorpion stings: A perspective study.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Scorpion sting is a public health concern with limited clinical symptomatic treatment. The clinical treatment uses anti-scorpion antivenom and prazosin (α-adrenergic inhibitor), often in combination with insulin, to reduce scorpion venom-induced hyperglycemia and other complications. However, these therapies also possess some limitations, necessitating urgent exploration of ethnomedicines, mainly traditional medicinal plants, to treat scorpion stings. Unfortunately, several conventional treatments are not scientifically validated, thus raising questions about th…

Antivenom for critically ill children with neurotoxicity from scorpion stings.

BACKGROUND: Clinically significant scorpion envenomation by Centruroides sculpturatus produces a dramatic neuromotor syndrome and respiratory insufficiency that often necessitate intensive supportive care. We hypothesized that a scorpion-specific F(ab')(2) antivenom would promptly resolve clinical symptoms in children with this syndrome. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind study, the efficacy of scorpion-specific F(ab')(2) antivenom, as compared with placebo, was assessed in 15 children 6 months to 18 years of age who were admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit with clinically signifi

Nephrotic syndrome after scorpion sting.

Scorpion venom is a water soluble, antigenic and heterogeneous mixture. The venom is composed of varying concentration of neurotoxin, cardiotoxin, nephrotoxin, haemolytic toxin, phosphodiesterase, phospholipases, hyaluronidases, glycosaminoglycans, histamine, serotonins, and tryptophan and cytokine releasers. The reported incidence of scorpion sting in India is 0.6 %. Scorpion sting resulting in acute renal failure has been reported in the past, but not the nephrotic syndrome. We report a patient of nephrotic syndrome after scorpion sting. The lacunae in the present knowledge linking scorpion

Osteomyelitis calcaneum due to a scorpion sting.

Children are susceptible to various injuries, including insect bites, and scorpion bites are common in the lower extremity of children in Middle East countries. In most cases, the sting will produce just a local reaction; however, serious complications that can result in death have occurred. In this case report, we describe a case of osteomyelitis of the calcaneum after a scorpion sting.

Epidemiology of scorpion stings in the West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory.

BACKGROUND: Scorpionism (scorpion sting envenoming) is an endemic public health concern in many Arab Middle Eastern countries. However, our knowledge of the epidemiology of scorpion stings in the West Bank is limited. AIM: To investigate the epidemiology of scorpion stings in 4 districts of the West Bank over a specified period. METHODS: We obtained scorpion sting records from the main hospitals in 4 districts of the West Bank for 2012 and 2014-2020. A total of 2175 cases were analyzed retrospectively using SPSS version 17. RESULTS: The average age and standard deviation (±SD) for both sexe…

[The epidemiological situation of scorpion stings in the Beni Mellal province].

The objective of this work is to analyse and interpret data from patients bitten by scorpions in a province of Morocco in order to reduce morbidity and mortality caused by scorpion venom. A study was conducted of 901 cases of poisoning among 6959 cases of scorpion stings recorded between January 2002 and December 2006 from bites recorded in Beni Mellal. The results show that poisoning strongly coincides with the summer period, especially in July and August. All age groups are affected by this disease with an average age of 17.28 +/- 17.91 years. For the time post injection, 35.2% were able to …

Epidemiological aspects of scorpion stings in Al-Jouf Province, Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Information on scorpion stings is available for many parts of Saudi Arabia, but not for Al-Jouf Province. METHODS: We reviewed and analyzed 1449 cases of scorpion stings that presented to the emergency department of the hospitals and medical centers in Al-Jouf Province during a 2-year period (2005-2006). RESULTS: The majority of patients (92.7%) manifested class I envenomation with local pain at the sting site as the primary complaint. Systemic toxicity was noticed in 7.3% of cases but no deaths were reported. Scorpion stings were recorded throughout the year with the highest sea…
