The compound effects of fluvial flooding, tidal dynamics, and sea-level rise (SLR) have the potential to mobilize pollutants at contaminated sites, which are often situated in flood-prone areas. We assessed the compound effects of these flood drivers on benzo-[a]-pyrene (B-[a]-P)-contaminated sediments in the Lower Darby Creek Area (LDCA) Superfund Site in Pennsylvania, USA. B-[a]-P, ubiquitous in the sediments of LDCA, is a known human carcinogen and is an indicator of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the environment. The LDCA is tidally influenced via the Delaware Bay, is projected to exp

Sea level rise (SLR) is estimated to impact 25% of the world's population along coastal areas leading to an increase in saltwater intrusion. Consequently, changes in the soil biogeochemistry of currently non-saline and/or well-drained soils due to saltwater intrusion are of major concern. Saltwater intrusion is expected to affect farmland across large broiler producer regions, where large amounts of manure containing organic arsenicals were applied over the past decades. To determine how SLR may impact the speciation and mobility of adsorbed inorganic and organic As, we used in situ real-time

Despite increasing risks from sea-level rise (SLR) and storms, US coastal communities continue to attract relatively high-income residents, and coastal property values continue to rise. To understand this seeming paradox and explore policy responses, we develop the Coastal Home Ownership Model (C-HOM) and analyze the long-term evolution of coastal real estate markets. C-HOM incorporates changing physical attributes of the coast, economic values of these attributes, and dynamic risks associated with storms and flooding. Resident owners, renters, and non-resident investors jointly determine coas

A scientific expert elicitation was conducted to address the feasibility of restoring coastal environments in response to future hazards to best meet management objectives. Subject matter experts produced probabilistic estimates of coastal change metrics used to evaluate decision objectives and alternatives informed by a stakeholder advisory group. Changes in salt marsh extents, storm surge flooding and barrier island morphology by the year 2050 were estimated for three scenarios of management actions (no action, interior headland restoration, beach and dune nourishment), while also considerin

The existence of coastal ecosystems depends on their ability to gain sediment and keep pace with sea level rise. Similar to other coastal areas, Northeast Florida (United States) is experiencing rapid population growth, climate change, and shifting wetland communities. Rising seas and more severe storms, coupled with the intensification of human activities, can modify the biophysical environment, thereby increasing coastal exposure to storm-induced erosion and inundation. Using the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve as a case study, we analyzed the distribution of coas

Estuaries are among the most intensively used aquatic environments, where steep physical and biogeochemical gradients interact with dense human populations and valuable ecosystems. Intense human usage has historically led to ecological degradation and persistent use conflicts, in many temperate estuaries that host major inland ports such as the Elbe estuary in the North Sea. Climate change, with its associated effects on sea levels and global temperatures, represents a significant challenge for the functioning of these systems. The impact on estuarine hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and water

Tidal wetlands are critical ecosystems for coastal sustainability, yet despite growing regulatory protection, they continue to decline globally. Their long-term resilience to interacting chronic stressors and extreme events remains uncertain, in part because comprehensive, high-frequency monitoring has been lacking. While direct land-use conversion has been substantially restricted in the United States, the true trajectory of these protected habitats has remained unclear. Here, we use four decades of high-resolution satellite records to analyze the shifting dynamics of US tidal wetlands. We re

Coral reefs, known for their remarkable diversity, serve a pivotal function in modulating the global oceanic carbon cycle and act as natural barriers that protect coastlines from erosion and storm surges by dissipating wave energy. Despite their importance, their sensitivity to temperature fluctuations, sea-level shifts and anthropogenic changes in the future is highly unknown. In this study, we create a comprehensive documentation of coral growth, sedimentology and ecology spanning the middle to late Holocene in the Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba, northern Red Sea. We then integrate these findings with

The small island nations, territories, and states dotting the Pacific are among the most disproportionately affected populations worldwide in the face of climate change. Sea level rise coupled with increased tropical storms contribute to seawater incursion, flooding, personal injury, trauma, and death. They face an existential threat due to the consequences of global warming, specifically ice melt resulting in sea level rise, repercussions for which they are not historically culpable. Along with these environmental threats, Pacific Island communities are further burdened with high rates of adv

The extensive shoreline of Mexico is heterogeneous and diverse, but it is increasingly exposed to degradation and loss. This is the first study performed at a national level and with a multidisciplinary approach, that aims to assess the impact of climate change and human-related pressures affecting Mexican coasts. From 1863 to 2022, 386 tropical cyclones have landed on Mexican coasts, six of them of category 5 (most on the Atlantic). Sea level rise projections showed that the Atlantic coast is the most vulnerable, whereas intense coastal erosion ( > 25m/year) is more widespread on the northern

Salt marshes provide ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration1, coastal protection2, sea-level-rise (SLR) adaptation3 and recreation4. SLR5, storm events6, drainage7 and mangrove encroachment8 are known drivers of salt marsh loss. However, the global magnitude and location of changes in salt marsh extent remains uncertain. Here we conduct a global and systematic change analysis of Landsat satellite imagery from the years 2000-2019 to quantify the loss, gain and recovery of salt marsh ecosystems and then estimate the impact of these changes on blue carbon stocks. We show a net salt marsh

Assessing changes in mean sea level (MSL) has become increasingly critical due to the significance of climate changes. Soft computing techniques are now widely used to reduce the time and cost associated with traditional MSL estimation methods. Historical MSL data is frequently used to predict future values, yet the application of soft computing models to analyze climate change's impact on MSL remains relatively unexplored. This study aims to develop and compare various soft computing techniques for modeling MSL fluctuations using meteorological data. Random forest (RF), support vector regress

Rising sea levels and intensifying storm surges are amplifying flooding risks in tropical and subtropical coastal regions under climate change. Conventional concrete structures provide reliable flood protection but they are increasingly criticized for their low ecological value and high maintenance costs. As an alternative, nature-based hybrid coastal protection systems, which combine engineering dikes with mangrove foreshores, are gaining recognition for providing both flood mitigation and ecological benefits. However, the wave attenuation performance and cost-effectiveness associated with di

Addressing sea-level rise and coastal flooding requires adaptation strategies tailored to specific coastal environments. However, a lack of detailed geomorphological data on global coasts impedes effective strategy development. This research maps seven coastal environments worldwide, and for each environment analyzes the effect of coastal changes on coastal populations by including sea-level change, extreme sea-level events with varying return periods and population growth from 1950 to 2050. It identifies the historical exposure of low-lying deltaic and estuarine flood areas (>48% of total pop

Regional sea level rise has been regarded a key factor in understanding of climate change impact to coastal communities. As a vulnerable island to sea level rise and storm surges, the province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) in Canada lacks sufficient long-term island-wide historic record of sea level data. This has become a major challenge for further studies on coastal environments and climate change adaptation. To overcome this limitation, here we reconstruct a long-term hourly sea level dataset using the existing long-term records of limited permanent tide stations and short-term records of

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are major drivers of global mean sea level rise and are predicted to continue to do so in the future. However, they also represent the largest source of uncertainty in projections of future sea level rise making robust estimates of observed ice sheet mass changes critical. Here, we compare and combine 42 independent estimates of ice sheet mass balance derived from satellite observations of temporal changes in ice sheet flow, volume, and gravitational attraction to determine the ice sheet mass balance from 1972 (Greenland) and 1979 (Antarctica) until 2023.

Changes in hydrologic and climatic trends will influence the ecology of Florida, and climate scenarios agree that many areas of Florida are susceptible to sea-level rise impacts. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Climate Change Action Program focuses on a framework to examine climate change effects on fish, wildlife, plants, and habitats of all three. To follow the program, this study examines how to incorporate current scientific knowledge about regional climate projections in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service analyses. It provides climate change and sea-level rise projections based on 2017 p

OBJECTIVE: This paper explores compounding challenges for older coastal populations due to accelerated sea level rise at the nexus of physical hazard exposure and place-based socioeconomic and health considerations.
METHODS: This study applies geospatial analysis to assess the spatial distribution of older adults (age 65+) and their socioeconomic characteristics in Miami-Dade County in Florida. Next, it uses logistic regression to evaluate the socioeconomic determinants of block groups with 20% or more of residents age 65 and older at 3 feet of sea level rise compared to the other block group

Climate-driven sea level rise (SLR) will intensify extreme sea level (ESL) events along China's coast. This study reconstructs continuous hourly total sea level (TSL) by incorporating SLA, tide, storm surge, and wave components, addressing the sparse coverage of tide gauges and their often overlooked extreme events (waves). Using a peak-over-threshold method (thresholds optimised between the 97.00-99.99th percentiles) and a 3-day declustering interval, extreme samples were fitted with generalised Pareto distributions via maximum likelihood estimation. Present-day 1-year return levels exceed 1.
