Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid - A diagnostic challenge.

Skin adnexal or sweat gland neoplasms are rare adnexal tumors that pose a diagnostic challenge for both ophthalmologists and pathologists. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is an uncommon low grade carcinoma of eccrine ducts with a predilection to occur in the periocular region in the elderly female. We present a rare case of 65-year-old healthy male who presented with a lobulated mass in the left eye lower lid, clinically suspected as sebaceous gland carcinoma, diagnosed as endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma histopathologically.

Cutaneous type adnexal tumors outside the skin.

Cutaneous adnexal neoplasms are complex lesions, including benign and malignant neoplasms in addition to malformations and hamartomas. They show one or several features of differentiation along follicular, sebaceous, apocrine, and eccrine lines. Rarely, cutaneous adnexal neoplasms or their mimics may arise outside the skin. In some organs, such as the parotid gland, a number of tumors comprise well-established entities, whereas in the majority of cases an extracutaneous occurrence of cutaneous-type adnexal lesions is a rare and often diagnostically challenging finding. This review discusses va

Complex adnexal tumor of the primary epithelial germ with distinct patterns of superficial epithelioma with sebaceous differentiation, immature trichoepithelioma, and apocrine adenocarcinoma.

A 60-year-old man came for treatment of a sharply outlined erythematous plaque on the gluteal area (45 x 20 mm) of 20 years' duration. Eccentrically located on the plaque was a nodule, 20 mm in diameter. Histological study of the plaque showed a superficial platelike tumor with basaloid bland cytology and sebaceous gland differentiation. Histologic study of the nodule found an undifferentiated adenocarcinoma whose ductlike glandular structures opened to the skin surface and infiltrated the whole depth of the dermis. Study of other areas of the lesion detected two more neoplasms. A nodule of sq

Sebaceous Adenocarcinoma in Parotid Gland of a 65-Year-Old.

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland is a rare, malignant epithelial neoplasm with focal areas of sebaceous differentiation. A literature search revealed only 34 cases as of December 2020. Our case brings this total to 35. It is characterized as a partially encapsulated neoplasm with predominant areas of basaloid or squamous cells, and variable degrees of sebaceous differentiation. The sebocytes display an immunohistochemical staining pattern of EMA (cytoplasmic vesicles), CD15, lactoferrin, GCDFP-2, and androgen receptor positivity in the sebocytes. Bimodal peaks occur in the third a

Nonsebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland: cytopathologic findings and differential diagnosis.

Lymphadenomas (sebaceous and nonsebaceous types) of the salivary glands are extremely uncommon benign neoplasms. There are rare published reports of cytopathologic characteristics of "nonsebaceous lymphadenomas" of the parotid gland. We report herein, the case of an 80-year-old female who was evaluated at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for a 4.0 cm, nontender, mobile asymptomatic left parotid mass present for 3 months. An ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration revealed a uniform population of cohesive basaloid-type cells associated with scant myxoid stroma and was interpreted as "epithelioid neo

Carcinoma of the uterine cervix with squamous and sebaceous differentiation.

Sebaceous neoplasms, including carcinoma, can exceptionally arise in extracutaneous sites. We present the third known case of carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation in the uterine cervix. Histologic and immunohistochemical features suggested a metaplastic process within an otherwise usual squamous cell carcinoma. We speculate that, by analogy with the skin where the epidermis and the 3 types of adnexa have a common embryologic origin from basal cell layer of the superficial ectoderm, it is possible that endocervical reserve cells, in addition to the well-known capacity of squamous differenti

Immunohistochemical study of calretinin in normal skin and cutaneous adnexal proliferations.

Calretinin is a calcium-binding protein member of the EF-hand family. The presence of calretinin has been demonstrated in certain stages of the cellular cycle in a wide variety of normal and neoplastic tissues. The main aims of our study were (1) to investigate what structures of the normal skin and cutaneous adnexal proliferations express immunoreactivity for calretinin and (2) to determine the value of immunohistochemical expression for calretinin as a marker for follicular, sebaceous, apocrine, and eccrine differentiation in cutaneous adnexal proliferations. We studied 139 biopsy specimens,

Morphology and histogenesis of anal region and clitoral gland tumors induced in mice by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine.

Ninety-seven tumors induced in the anal region in female CBA and BALB/c mice by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine were examined histologically. Tumors originated mainly from the following sources: epidermis (papillomas and basal cell neoplasms), pilosebaceous complexes of the anal region (keratoacanthomas, cystic squamous cell tumors, and adenomas of the perianal sebaceous glands), and clitoral (preputial) glands (adenomas and adenoacanthomas). A subcutaneous location and late ulceration were characteristics of many tumors originating from the pilosebaceous complexes and clitoral glads. From 31 to 43% of

Muir-Torre syndrome: case report and review of the literature.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS), a subtype of Lynch syndrome II, presents as at least one internal malignancy associated with at least one sebaceous skin tumor. This autosomal-dominant genetic disorder is thought to arise from microsatellite instability. Although not all patients with sebaceous tumors have MTS, even a single biopsy-proven sebaceous adenoma may warrant evaluation for MTS. We report the case of a 76-year-old man with a marked family history of colon cancer; a personal history of colon cancer status post-partial resection of the colon; and multiple cutaneous neoplasms including sebaceo

Sebaceous gland carcinoma of the eyelids in Hawaii.

Sebaceous gland carcinomas of the eyelids are rare neoplasms accounting for less than 1% of all eyelid tumors. They usually mimic chalazia and undergo repeated curettage before a definitive diagnosis is made. Although they are relatively slow-growing tumors, they behave in an aggressive manner, frequently metastasizing to regional lymph nodes. Approximately 50% of the patients who develop metastasis to lymph nodes of the neck will survive five years. A case report and the review of similar cases in Hawaii in the past 10 years demonstrates the need for early detection and treatment of sebaceous

A red cheek as first clinical sign of a sebaceous lymphadenocarcinoma of the parotid gland with lymphangiosis carcinomatosa and lymph node metastases.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare benign neoplasm presenting predominantly in the parotid gland or in periparotid lymph nodes. It rarely transforms into a malignant tumor. We present a sebaceous lymphadenoma with an unusual clinical presentation with a malignant component, infiltration of lymph nodes, and lymphangiosis carcinomatosa. Sebaceous lymphadenoma usually presents as a well-circumscribed, painless, infraauricular mass. In our 87-years-old male patient, the clinical presentation was confluent reddish livid plaques at the left cheek and the left neck. In addition, cervical lymph node met

Sebaceous gland tumors and systemic disease: a clinicopathologic analysis.

The association of sebaceous gland neoplasms with visceral carcinomas, first described by Muir and Torre, has become widely recognized. The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of malignancy, other associated diseases, and familial carcinoma in patients who had one or more cutaneous lesions within the spectrum of sebaceous adenoma, epithelioma, or carcinoma. Our histopathology files contained tissue from 59 such cases. Overlap between the categories was common, often precluding precise histologic classification. Of the 59 patients, 25 (42%) had one or more primary visceral mali

Sox10 and DOG1 Expression in Primary Adnexal Tumors of the Skin.

Primary skin adnexal tumors can be challenging to classify and must be discerned from cutaneous adenocarcinoma metastases from various sites. We evaluated expression of Sox10 and DOG1 in normal cutaneous adnexa and in 194 primary skin adnexal tumors, and compared their performance in discriminating primary skin adnexal tumors from cutaneous metastatic adenocarcinomas with that of p40 and p63. In normal skin adnexa, we noted Sox10 expression in both the secretory and myoepithelial cells in eccrine glands, but only in myoepithelial cells in apocrine glands. DOG1 demonstrated canalicular expressi

Association of sebaceous gland tumors and internal malignancy: the Muir-Torre syndrome.

The Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by: (1) at least a single sebaceous gland tumor (either an adenoma, an epithelioma, or a carcinoma) and (2) a minimum of one internal malignancy. To date, 120 patients with MTS have been reported. The most commonly associated neoplasms were colorectal (51%) and genitourinary (25%). Unlike colorectal neoplasms in the general population, the majority (58%) of these tumors in MTS patients occurred proximal to or at the splenic flexure. Nearly half of the MTS patients had more than one primary malignancy. Cutaneous

Multiple Parotid Sebaceous Lymphadenoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare parotid gland neoplasm. Up to now, there have been several studies that have discussed the imaging manifestations of salivary sebaceous lymphadenoma. In this paper, we have reported a case of multiple parotid sebaceous lymphadenoma demonstrated by ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI examinations, including diffusion-weighted imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first one on DWI findings of sebaceous lymphadenomas, and also the first report on multiple lesions in unilateral parotid gland. Attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis and Muir-Torre syndrome linked to compound biallelic constitutional MYH gene mutations.Peculiar dermatologic manifestations are present in several heritable gastrointestinal disorders. Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is a genodermatosis whose peculiar feature is the presence of sebaceous gland tumors associated with visceral malignancies. We describe one patient in whom multiple sebaceous gland tumors were associated with early onset colon and thyroid cancers and attenuated polyposis coli. Her family history was positive for colonic adenomas. She had a daugh

Malignant sweat gland tumours: an update.

Cutaneous adnexal tumours can be a diagnostic challenge for the pathologist. This is particularly true in the case of tumours with sweat gland differentiation, due to a large number of rare entities, a multiplicity of names to designate the same neoplasms and consequent lack of consensus regarding their classification and nomenclature. In the traditional view, sweat gland tumours were divided into eccrine and apocrine. However, this has been challenged in recent years, and in fact many of these tumours may have both eccrine and apocrine variants. Some display more complex features and defy cla

Oncocytic lipoadenoma of the parotid gland: a report of a new case and review of the literature.

Oncocytic lipoadenoma is a rare salivary gland tumour composed of adipose tissue and oncocytic epithelial cells in varied proportions. This tumour is still not included in the current WHO classification of salivary gland neoplasms. We herein report a further case of oncocytic lipoadenoma originating in the parotid gland of a 55-year-old woman. The tumour presented as a slowly growing asymptomatic left-sided parotid gland mass. The resected tumour measured 2.7 cm in maximum diameter and was composed of oncocytoma-like epithelial component admixed with mature adipocytes that made up 10% of the w
