Wolves increase germination speed and success of blueberries.

Seed dispersal plays a key role in facilitating important ecological processes that reduce plant competition, parasitism and predation while promoting gene flow and biodiversity. In many ecosystems across North America and Eurasia, wolves consume fruits when available. However, the impact of wolf consumption on seeds, particularly germination success and speed, remains unknown. We extracted blueberry seeds from wolf scats and fresh fruits in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem, Minnesota, USA, where wolves forage extensively on blueberries in summer. We grew seeds under controlled conditions to as

Chia seed mucilage biosorbent synergism with hydrophobic iron (III)-natural phenolic nanoparticles for dispersive solid-phase extraction of tetracycline residues in milk and honey samples before HPLC analysis.

This study utilized the synergistic effectiveness of chia seed mucilage and iron (III)-natural phenolic nanoparticles as biosorbents for the first time in the dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline followed by HPLC-UV quantification. An in-situ iron (III)-natural phenolic solid adsorbent was created using natural phenolics found in the copper pod tree bark. An ultrasonic-assisted extraction was performed to enhance the extraction efficiency of DSPE-based biosorbents. Excellent linearity with R2 greater than 0.9957 was achie

Uncovering the mechanical secrets of the squirting cucumber.

Rapid movement is rare in the plant kingdom, but a prerequisite for ballistic seed dispersal. A particularly dramatic example of rapid motion in plants is the squirting cucumber (Ecballium elaterium) which launches its seeds explosively via a high-pressure jet. Despite intriguing scientists for centuries, the exact mechanism of seed dispersal and its effect on subsequent generations remain poorly understood. Here, through a combination of experimentation, high-speed videography, quantitative image analysis, and mathematical modeling, we develop a full mechanical description of the process. We

Scent-mediated bee pollination and myrmecochory in an enigmatic geophyte with pyrogenic flowering and subterranean development of fleshy fruits.

PREMISE: Volatile emissions from flowers and fruits play a key role in signalling to animals responsible for pollination and seed dispersal. Here, we investigated the pollination biology and chemical ecology of reproduction in Apodolirion buchananii, an African amaryllid that flowers in a leafless state soon after grassland vegetation is burnt in the dry late-winter season. METHODS: Pollinators were identified through field collection and pollen loads were quantified. Floral traits including spectral reflectance and scent chemistry were documented. Bioassays using cup traps were used to test

Woody species diversity and dispersal dynamics in Biyo Forest, Central Ethiopia: a conservation perspective.

BACKGROUND: Seed dispersal shapes species composition, regeneration, and long-term resilience of dry Afromontane forests. In Ethiopia, there is limited information on how woody species disperse and recruit. Biyo Forest, a protected exclosure in central Ethiopia, offers an opportunity to study how different dispersal methods shape forest structure and inform conservation efforts. This study looked at the types of woody species present, their population structure, regeneration status, and how they are dispersed to better understand what supports forest sustainability. METHODS: Woody species wer

Patterns of seed bank and vegetation diversity along a tidal freshwater river.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Species richness and diversity may increase with spatial scale related to increased area and heterogeneity of habitat. Yet, in bidirectional hydrologically connected tidal ecosystems, secondary dispersal via hydrochory has the potential to homogenize seed banks, and both life history characteristics and tolerances to environmental conditions influence the composition of plant communities. How species richness, diversity, and composition of seed banks and vegetation change along environmental gradients and at different spatial scales is not well understood. METHODS: We ex

Geographically Disperse, Culturable Seed-Associated Microbiota in Forage Plants of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and Pitch Clover (Bituminaria bituminosa L.): Characterization of Beneficial Inherited Strains as Plant Stress-Tolerance Enhancers.

Agricultural production is being affected by increasingly harsh conditions caused by climate change. The vast majority of crops suffer growth and yield declines due to a lack of water or intense heat. Hence, commercial legume crops suffer intense losses of production (20-80%). This situation is even more noticeable in plants used as fodder for animals, such as alfalfa and pitch trefoil, since their productivity is linked not only to the number of seeds produced, but also to the vegetative growth of the plant itself. Thus, we decided to study the microbiota associated with their seeds in differ

Multi-scale drivers of spontaneous plant diversity in urban residential green spaces across dispersal modes: Implications for ecological planning.

Residential green spaces (RGSs) are ubiquitous elements of the urban fabric and can function as low-maintenance, nature-based solutions that reconnect fragmented habitats and deliver ecosystem services. Yet the mechanisms by which multi-scale environments shape spontaneous plant diversity across seed-dispersal modes remain poorly understood. We surveyed 138 RGSs in Fuzhou, China, recording 382 spontaneous plant species, and classifying them into wind-dispersed (anemochory), animal-dispersed (zoochory), water-dispersed (hydrochory), and self-dispersed (autochory). Using Multiscale Geographicall

Potential effects of brown howler monkey extinction on dispersal services in fragmented forests void of large dispersers.

The dispersal of large-seeded species strongly depends on medium-sized and large frugivores, such as primates, which are highly susceptible to population declines. In the Atlantic Forest, brown howler monkeys Alouatta guariba are medium-sized folivorous-frugivorous species that are likely to occur in small to large fragments where the largest frugivores are extinct. However, populations of this primate have been suffering from forest fragmentation, habitat loss, hunting, and the direct and indirect effects of yellow fever outbreaks, which increase the importance of understanding their role as

Dispersal, dormancy and life-history tradeoffs at the individual, population and species levels in southern African Asteraceae.

Dispersal and dormancy are important risk-reducing strategies in unpredictable environments. Negative covariation between these strategies is theoretically expected, but empirical evidence is limited and inconsistent. Moreover, covariation may be affected by other life-history traits and may vary across levels of biological organization. We assessed dispersal (vertical fall time of fruits, a proxy for wind dispersal ability) and dormancy (germination fractions measured during germination trials) in populations of 15 annual and 12 perennial wind-dispersed species in six Asteraceae genera from S

Methods for Improving the Germination of Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino Seeds through Endocarp Removal.

Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino is known to have a seed dispersal that is thick and stony (endocarp + seeds) and has potential as a landscaping tree seed. In several Rosaceae species, seeds are covered with a hard endocarp, making the internal seeds water-impermeable and germination difficult. Here, we analyzed the morphoanatomical traits and germination properties of R. scandens seeds. To identify ideal seed propagation conditions, we immersed R. scandens seeds in sulfuric acid for varying durations and subjected them to phytohormone (gibberellic acid A3 and fluridone) and a cold stratifi

Introduced species shed friends as well as enemies.

Many studies seeking to understand the success of biological invasions focus on species' escape from negative interactions, such as damage from herbivores, pathogens, or predators in their introduced range (enemy release). However, much less work has been done to assess the possibility that introduced species might shed mutualists such as pollinators, seed dispersers, and mycorrhizae when they are transported to a new range. We ran a cross-continental field study and found that plants were being visited by 2.6 times more potential pollinators with 1.8 times greater richness in their native ran

Bird species with similar effect traits maintain the temporal stability of community functions under disturbances of tropical cyclones.

Climate change is altering the frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events such as tropical cyclones, raising concerns about ecological stability under these disturbances. This study examined how functional richness and functional redundancy influenced the stability of two key ecological functions-insect predation and seed dispersal-in forest bird communities with contrasting histories of cyclone exposure. Using total biomass of insectivores and frugivores as functional indicators, we found that the stability of insect predation increased with redundancy in function-delivering traits un

[Seed dormancy associated with embryo immaturity: Contribution for the study of Magnolia soulangeana Soul. Bod. and Magnolia grandiflora L. by means of in vitro culture].

At the time of seed dispersal, the embryos of Magnolia grandiflora L. and Magnolia soulangeana Soul. Bod. are still immature. When they are aseptically isolated and cultivated in a medium containing agar, mineral salts and sucrose, the pattern of development depends upon the morphological stage they have reached in the seed. With the older stages, precocious germination was obtained but in no case was true embryo dormancy observed. Furthermore, in Magnolia grandiflora L. the outer seed coat is responsible for preventing the seed germination.

Invasive Strawberry Guava weakens avian frugivory in native forests of an oceanic island.

Frugivorous birds play a vital role in tropical forests by dispersing seeds and facilitating plant regeneration. The effectiveness of frugivores, including birds, as seed dispersers depends in part on their fruit removal rates. Although invasive alien plants (IAP) may influence the seed-dispersal role of birds in varied ways, few comparative field studies have dealt with avian frugivore-plant interactions, particularly in settings of advanced invasion on oceanic islands. We assess how IAP influences birds' attack rates on fruit models, to explore the ecological and conservation implications fo

Genetic Diversity and Spatial Genetic Structure of the Grassland Perennial Saxifraga granulata along Two River Systems.

Due to changes in land use, the natural habitats of an increasing number of plant species have become more and more fragmented. In landscapes that consist of patches of suitable habitat, the frequency and extent of long-distance seed dispersal can be expected to be an important factor determining local genetic diversity and regional population structure of the remaining populations. In plant species that are restricted to riparian habitats, rivers can be expected to have a strong impact on the dynamics and spatial genetic structure of populations as they may enable long-distance seed dispersal

Elevated threat status of large-fruited plants is associated with the extinction of large frugivores in the Caribbean islands.

Anthropogenic activities severely impair biodiversity and ecosystem functionality. A prime example is the loss of frugivores and their corresponding seed dispersal services due to defaunation (the decline of animal populations), ultimately affecting the continued persistence of plant species that lack their ecological partners. Loss of frugivores and their biotic interactions can be particularly severe on islands due to their isolation and relatively small area, which is often associated with low functional redundancy. From field observations on the Caribbean Virgin Islands, we found that only

Smart plants: memory and communication without brains.

The immobility of plants is consistent with their principal function: collecting light to provide photosynthetic substrate for the biological system. Their immobility does impose limitations on some basic requirements, such as the need for pollination, for seed dispersal, and for protection against herbivores. Meeting these 3 needs will logically necessitate some ability for plant communication - at least a capability for beneficial adaptive behavior. Three types of plant behavior provide evidence of memory and communication abilities: a capability for memory, a capability for measuring time,

Color and odor of artificial fruit used to signal potential dispersers in the Atlantic forest in Brazil.

Fruit color and odor are the main features regulating the rate of fruit predation and dispersal. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of odor and color on fruit predators and dispersers. The present study was conducted in a 30ha area of secondary forest in Southeastern Atlantic Brazil. This area was divided into two transects, in which four points were marked with a 30m distance from each other. Each sampling point contained a total of 30 artificial fruit which belong to six different treatment groups, with five artificial fruit per group. Each group was randomly placed on the groun

The role of birds and mammals in Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) regeneration dynamics.

This study examined the interrelationships of the fall seed-foraging guild with Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and its regeneration. The study took place in old-growth and secondary-growth forests in Northeastern China. Foraging behavior, seed transportation distance, and cache location of various birds and mammals were observed. Regeneration characteristics of Korean pine were also analyzed using plots in various vegetation cover types, successional stages, and topographical situations. Ten species of vertebrates were able to harvest seed from the closed-cone Korean pine. Of these, the Eurasi
