The duration of febrile seizures and peripheral leukocytosis.

In 203 consecutive children with febrile seizures, no clear association (odds ratio = 1.0 [95% CI, 0.9-1.1], P = .59) was found between seizure duration and blood leukocytosis (> or = 15.0 x 10(9) cells/L). Increased leukocyte counts may be misinterpreted because of seizure duration. In children with febrile seizures, leukocyte counts should be used to evaluate the underlying cause of fever.

Factors triggering the first febrile seizure.

The symptomatology of infections as well as immunological and virological findings were analysed using a logistic model in a survey of 58 children experiencing their first febrile seizures. These were then compared with findings in 116 age- and sex-matched controls with infections but no seizures. There were no statistically significant differences in the aetiology of infections between patients and controls. High temperature was the only variable to explain the occurrence of febrile seizures in the logistic model after adjusting for duration of symptoms (partial correlation coefficient in log

Management of febrile seizures in a developing country.

In the analysis of 128 patients with febrile convulsions, we identified hazards not encountered in the western world, which could alter the ultimate management of the child. These include administration of home remedies during the seizures, detrimental cultural beliefs and poor socio-economic conditions. All complex seizures in our series were initial seizures. Recurrent benign febrile seizures did not predispose to a complex seizure. Behaviour disorders were the most prominent side effect following long term phenobarbitone administration.

Febrile myoclonus: an underreported, benign condition in infancy often misinterpreted as febrile seizures.

Massive myoclonic jerks, often presenting in a dramatic fashion during a febrile illness, have rarely been reported and have usually been related to as febrile seizures. Febrile myoclonus is usually a benign phenomenon with no neurological sequelae. However, it may be impressive enough to provoke unnecessary diagnostic workup and treatment in these patients. Thus, its recognition by the emergency room or by the primary care physician is important to provide reassurance to the parents or caregivers and to prevent unwarranted hospitalizations and diagnostic procedures such as lumbar puncture and

A Comparative Study of Febrile Seizures and Febrile Convulsions Associated With Mild Gastroenteritis.

BACKGROUND: Children presenting with complex febrile seizures (FS) have an increased risk of developing epilepsy. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of complex seizures in children presenting with FS and those with both convulsions associated with mild gastroenteritis (CwG) and fever. METHODS: Children admitted to our Pediatric Emergency Department between January 2017 and April 2019 with seizures were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Patients were grouped according to the etiology as FS and febrile CwG. FS classification criteria of simple FS and complex FS was applied to

Short-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of focal febrile seizures.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of complex febrile seizures (FS), specifically focal FS, on long-term neurodevelopmental outcome is not well known. The aim of this study was to assess the association between complex FS and neurodevelopmental outcome. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective, cohort study was performed. The study included 282 children aged 6-60 months who experienced FS. Of these, 61 (22%) experienced recurrent FS, 33 (12%) prolonged FS, and 17 (6%) focal FS. The effect of these complex FS on subsequent need for special neurodevelopmental support was investigated. The neurodevelopmental

Epilepsy After Febrile Seizures: Twins Suggest Genetic Influence.

BACKGROUND: A history of complex febrile seizures can increase the risk of epilepsy, but the role of genetic factors is unclear. This analysis evaluated the relationship between febrile seizures and epilepsy. METHODS: Information on the history of seizures was obtained by a questionnaire from twin pairs in the Mid-Atlantic, Danish, and Norwegian Twin Registries. The information was verified using medical records and detailed clinical and family interviews. The initial study evaluated the genetic epidemiology of febrile seizures in this population. Further information was analyzed and used to

Factors prognostic of unprovoked seizures after febrile convulsions.

We evaluated the risk of unprovoked seizures after febrile convulsions and the factors prognostic of them in a cohort of 687 children who had an initial febrile seizure while residing in Rochester, Minnesota. Overall, children with febrile convulsions had a fivefold excess of unprovoked seizures, and the risk until the age of 25 was 7 percent. The risk ranged from 2.4 percent among children with simple febrile convulsions to 6 to 8 percent among children with a single complex feature--i.e., focal or prolonged seizures or repeated episodes of febrile convulsions with the same illness. For child

Relation of Iron Deficiency with Simple Febrile Seizures.

Febrile seizure (FS) is the most common seizure disorder in early childhood, affecting approximately 2.0-5.0% of children aged 6-60 months. The peak incidence of FS occurs between 14 and 18 months of age, which coincides with the highest prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in children aged 1-2 years. This study aimed to evaluate the association between iron deficiency and simple febrile seizures. A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted in the Department of Paediatrics, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, from September 2018 to February 2020. The study included 150 children a

[Pre-hospital and hospital treatment of febrile seizures].

INTRODUCTION: Given that febrile seizures are a common reason for both hospital and pre-hospital visits to physicians, and in the absence of a clear consensus on guidelines for treatment, especially for complex febrile seizures (CFS), we aim to examine their characteristics and treatment in order to improve the approach to the issue. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is an observational, retrospective, single-centre study including paediatric patients seen after a seizure associated with a febrile illness in the emergency department of a second-level hospital between September 2021 and December 2023

Register-based studies on febrile seizures in Denmark.

During a short period of brain development, one out of 25 children experience seizures when exposed to fever. The risk and consequences of these febrile seizures remain incompletely understood. We have conducted a number of studies within a population-based cohort of 1.6 million children born in Denmark (1977-2004). We constructed the cohort by linking registers on civil service, health, and cause of death. We followed the cohort for up to 28 years with virtually no loss to follow-up. The aetiology of febrile seizures depends on a genetic susceptibility that can be transmitted through both par

Long-term outcome of children with febrile seizures.

This study investigates the long-term outcome of children admitted to hospital for febrile seizures (FS) in Singapore. Children born between 1/1/1980 and 31/12/1982 who were admitted to the Singapore General Hospital between 1/1/81 and 31/12/82 with FS were the subjects of this study. Four hundred and seventy-nine children were identified. Their medical records were analysed. Four hundred and seventy-six children (99.4%) were traced in 1988. The average age at follow up was 7.3 years. There were no deaths or permanent neurological deficits from FS. Eighteen children had one or more afebrile se

Occult bacteremia in children with simple febrile seizures.

The controversy surrounding the diagnostic workup for simple febrile seizures has centered around the lumbar puncture. This focus has obscured the potential importance of other tests. A retrospective study was performed to determine the frequency of occult bacteremia in simple febrile seizures. In a pediatric emergency department, we identified 115 cases of simple febrile seizures in children treated as outpatients. Blood cultures were performed in 93 (81%) of 115 patients; five (5.4%) were positive. Children were less likely to have blood cultures performed if they were older than 24 months o

Beyond the seizure: the role of post-event observation in febrile seizure management.

UNLABELLED: Simple febrile seizures (SFS) are a common cause of pediatric emergency department (PED) visits. Guidelines discourage extensive workup for children presenting with SFS, but there is little consensus on whether, or how long, to observe these patients. The objective of this study is to identify clinical, demographic, and historical factors associated with short-term seizure recurrence which might merit an observational period in children who have suffered a febrile seizure. This retrospective cohort study included children aged 12 months to 5 years who presented to the PED with a si

Risk factors of seizure and complex seizure in febrile children: a clinical study.

PURPOSE: There is some evidence that trace element and mineral deficiencies may promote the occurrence of febrile seizures. However, the role of these elements in the occurrence of complex seizures in children with FS has not been comprehensively investigated. The present study was conducted to evaluate this issue. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 220 patients including 110 febrile and 110 FS children aged 6-60 months were studied. Blood samples were taken and serum zinc, potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium levels were measured. Demographic and clinical characteristics were also reco

"Simple febrile seizures plus (SFS+)": more than one febrile seizure within 24 hours is usually okay.

This study aimed to investigate whether children with recurrent febrile seizures within a 24-hour period need to be worked up differently from children with simple febrile seizures. Inclusion criteria included the following: (i) children with first seizure cluster between 4 months and 3 years of age, (ii) children who had more than one febrile seizure within 24 hours, and (iii) children who returned to baseline between and after each event. Thirty-two patients met the inclusion criteria over a 3-year period. All patients underwent brain CT and/or MRI and EEG. All head CTs were normal. Two chil

Effects of maternal docosahexaenoic acid intake on febrile seizures and increased seizure susceptibility after febrile seizures: study using mouse models and human samples.

The effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on seizures and epilepsy remain controversial and appear to depend on the specific context. In this study, we investigated the effects of maternal DHA intake on febrile seizures and postfebrile seizure susceptibility. Mice exposed to DHA during pregnancy showed considerably higher brain DHA and 17β-estradiol (E2) levels than controls, along with a marked delay in the onset of febrile seizures. These effects were abolished by letrozole, an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 family 19 subfamily A, suggesting that the DHA-induced increase in E2 reduces suscepti

Hypocalcemia as a Cause of Complex Febrile Seizures in a Toddler.

A 13-month-old boy had suffered three episodes of complex febrile seizures. At this admission, there were signs of hyperexcitability, such as Trousseau sign and QTc prolongation. A point of care blood gas analysis revealed severe hypocalcemia. Therefore, prior to administering intravenous calcium gluconate, we took blood samples to investigate the etiology of this hypocalcemia: magnesium, parathormone, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Since both parathormone and phosphate were significantly elevated and 25-hydroxyvitamin D was within the normal range, pseudohypoparathyroidism was diagnosed. After two

Cytokine dermatitis and febrile seizure from imiquimod.

Cytokine dermatitis is a well-known and common clinical adverse effect of imiquimod 5% cream (Aldara, 3M). Data from initial Phase III clinical trials reveal a minority of study drug patients experience systemic adverse effects, including fever, arthralgia, headache, myalgia, and lymphadenopathy. These adverse effects are caused, presumably, from increased absorption of study drug over the area of dermatitis, leading to systemic cytokine release. Furthermore, the incidence of systemic reactions was rarely statistically increased above control patients. We describe herein a case of severe cytok

Influenza A infection is an important cause of febrile seizures.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the incidence of febrile seizures in children hospitalized for influenza A infection with parainfluenza and adenovirus infection and to examine the hypothesis that children hospitalized for influenza A (variant Sydney/H3N2) during the 1998 season in Hong Kong had more frequent and refractory seizures when compared with other respiratory viruses, including the A/Wuhan H3N2 variant that was present in the previous year. METHODS: Medical records of children between 6 months and 5 years of age admitted for influenza A infection in 1998 were reviewed. For comparison, records
