The Role of Self-Care for Parents in Recovery From Substance Use Disorders: An Integrative Review of Parental Self-Care.

BACKGROUND: Lack of stress modifiers, such as self-care behaviors (SCBs), can increase vulnerability to drug use for parents in recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs). PURPOSE: The purpose of this integrative review was to determine how the existing literature describes, conceptualizes, and measures SCB for parents in the general population for its application to parents with a history of SUD. METHODS: Framed by Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory of Substance Abuse, four qualitative and five quantitative studies identify SCB, although only one study describes SCB of parents in recovery.

Self-care provision of contraception: Evidence and insights from contraceptive injectable self-administration.

As new reproductive health products become available, women increasingly want to take a participatory role in their health. New developments and formulations of contraceptive products provide an opportunity to support this evolving trend toward self-care. Self-care, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), highlights the ability of individuals to promote health, prevent disease, and manage their own health with or without the support of a health care provider. The recently released WHO Guidelines on Self-Care Interventions for Health: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights include

Self-determination theory interventions in self-care of cardiovascular disease: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Effective self-care behaviours are critical for the secondary prevention of CVD, however many individuals fail to engage in these self-care activities in the long-term. Self-determination theory (SDT) offers a robust theoretical framework for understanding motivations for engaging in self-care. SDT-based interventions may improve self-care in people with CVD but has yet to be systematically reviewed. OBJECTIVES: A systematic review was conducted to determine the effectiveness of SDT-based interventi

Taking care of self: Health care decision making of American Indian women.

In this article, I report a component of a qualitative grounded theory study on health care decision making of American Indian women (AIW) residing in the Northeastern United States. Analysis was based upon data collected from 20 women who self-identified as American Indian. Taking care of self was a primary factor influencing health care decisions among this sample of AIW. As women moved between their Native, traditional health practices and conventional Western health practices, efforts toward taking care of self were especially salient. The properties of taking care of self include knowing

Self-perceived unmet health care needs of persons enrolled in HIV care.

We examined the prevalence of, and factors associated with unmet health service needs among persons with HIV disease. Data were examined from 1,851 participants in the U.S. AIDS Cost and Service Utilization Study, drawn from 26 medical care providers in 10 cities. Geographic areas with large numbers of AIDS cases, and health care providers within them were chosen as study sites. After completing a screener questionnaire, potential participants at each site were stratifed by illness stage, HIV exposure route, and insurance status; a systematic random sample within those strata were selected for

Symptom Clusters and Mindful Self-Care in People with Cancer in Palliative Care.

Introduction: Cancer is one of the evils of the current era and is considered a global public health problem. This disease has repercussions for the lives of patients in several dimensions, namely, physical, emotional, and psychosocial. Thus, it is believed that elements such as resilience, symptomatology, and self-care are related, as the disease and its treatments can have repercussions that extend beyond the clinic. Background/Objectives: We aimed to determine the relationship between symptom clusters and the mindful self-care of people with cancer in palliative care. Methods: This is a cro

Quality of care in abortion in the era of technological and medical advancements and self-care.

BACKGROUND: Discussions around quality of abortion care have been focused mainly on service-delivery aspects inside healthcare facilities. More recently, with availability of medical abortion (MA), increase in its self-use, and emergence of other delivery platforms such as telemedicine, the responsibility of quality care has broadened to actors outside of facilities. BODY OF TEXT: This commentary discusses the meaning of quality of abortion care with the paradigm shift brought by medical and technological advancement in abortions, and raises questions on the role of the state in ensuring qual

Self-Care Agency in Cardiovascular Care: A Cross-Sectional Study on the Interplay Between Self-Efficacy, Loneliness and Physical Activity.

BACKGROUND: Appraisal for self-care agency (ASAS) is central to cardiovascular disease (CVD) management, yet the influence of loneliness as a social stressor remains under-characterized. METHODS: In patients with CVD (N = 80), cross-sectional predictors for ASAS were assessed via ordinary least squares (OLS) and quantile regression; robust methods are supplemented to buffer the sample size. Interaction effects on ASAS were tested between loneliness and physical activity, and loneliness and self-efficacy. RESULTS: The diminishing effect of loneliness explained 10% of ASAS variance and remaine

The self-efficacy perception in cardiovascular patients: A cohort study on self-care management.

OBJECTIVE: The international cardiovascular guidelines emphasise self-care as a key factor for better health management in patients. Self-care incorporated into patient engagement is considered vital for the patient-provider relationship to alleviate the polipharmacological treatment burden. However, several cardiovascular (CV) patients struggle to adhere to recommendations. The present study aims to address this research gap by exploring the adherence and real-world effectiveness in a CV population. From this perspective, our cohort study attempted to determine self-care ability based on the

Danish community pharmacies supporting self-care for patients.

In Denmark, self-care has been a part of the health care professional and health political discourse since the middle of the 1970s particularly in relation to prevention. However, the concept has become more visible in connection with the Danish government's public health programme "Healthy throughout life" from 2002 to 2010, where patients' self-care was highlighted as an important element in preventing disease progression and complications. Self-care in Denmark is seen as a partnership between the patient and the health care professional. Some self-care activities in Danish community pharmac

Integrating self-managed medication abortion with medical care.

In this commentary, we distill key messages from a new framework for self-managed medication abortion developed by Global Doctors for Choice. Since Global Doctors for Choice supports doctors working in different contexts around the world, the document also highlights clinical concerns and advocacy opportunities for clinicians in both low- and high-resource settings, and in places with varying legal and administrative restrictions on abortion.

Self-care in adults with sickle cell disease.

This article summarizes the psychometric evaluation of the Chronic Illness Assessment Interview for Sickle Cell Disease (CIAI-SCD), an instrument based on a model of self-care for adult patients with chronic medical conditions. The CIAI-SCD was administered to 104 adults with sickle cell disease. A factor analysis identified three factors that reflected the psychological constructs of Personal Satisfaction and Perceived Control (Factor 1), Feeling Concerned and Worried (Factor 2), and Feeling Supported (Factor 3). Preliminary evidence for the internal consistency, test-retest reliability conte
