Low Perceived Self-Efficacy Impedes Discriminative Fear Learning.

Perceived self-efficacy refers to a subject's expectation about the outcomes his/her behavior will have in a challenging situation. Low self-efficacy has been implicated in the origins and maintenance of phobic behavior. Correlational studies suggest an association between perceived self-efficacy and learning. The experimental manipulation of perceived self-efficacy offers an interesting approach to examine the impact of self-efficacy beliefs on cognitive and emotional functions. Recently, a positive effect of an experimentally induced increased self-efficacy on associative learning has been d

The Effect of Shame and Self-Efficacy on Gambling Behaviour.

Previous research has identified the benefits of increasing self-efficacy in problem gamblers, while other research has identified higher levels of shame and dysfunctional coping in problem gamblers. The primary aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between problem gambling behaviour, shame (as both a personality trait and an emotional state), gambling-related self-efficacy, and dysfunctional coping mechanisms. The sample consisted of 235 participants (172 male; mean age = 30.32, SD = 8.57), who completed an online, self-report questionnaire that assessed gambling severity,

Associations between health-related self-efficacy and suicidality.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on exploring the association of self-efficacy and suicidal behaviour. In this study, we aim to investigate the association between health-related self-efficacy and suicidality outcomes, including lifetime/recent suicidal ideation, suicidal attempts and future intent of suicide. METHODS: A computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) system was used to draw potential respondents aged over 15 in Taiwan via telephone numbers, which were selected by a stratified proportional randomization method according to the distribution of population size in different geo

Efficacy of self-perception after traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Anosognosia is a lack of awareness of personal deficits that is commonly observed in people with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to examine whether self-appraisal of executive functioning differs for students with and without TBI. METHODS: Students who had survived a TBI and those who had never had a TBI filled out the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning from three different perspectives. Each participant was paired with an observer who was familiar with the person's behavior. Self-appraisal ratings, observer ratings of the p

Simulated self-assessment in large language models: A psychometric approach to AI self-efficacy.

Large language models (LLMs) are frequently perceived to have human-like comprehension capabilities. However, their proficiency in evaluating and quantifying these capacities remains uncertain. We conducted a controlled psychometric measurement study adapting the 10-item General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) to evaluate simulated self-assessment across 10 contemporary LLMs. Models completed the GSES under a no-task control condition and after three task-priming conditions: computational reasoning, social reasoning, and summarization. We examined between-model variation, task versus no-task differ

Theories and determinants of self-care and self-efficacy in inflammatory bowel diseases: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic condition requiring complex, lifelong self-care. While self-care and self-efficacy are critical for improving patient outcomes, the theoretical underpinnings and key determinants influencing these processes are not well synthesized. A comprehensive understanding is essential for developing effective, patient-centred interventions. This systematic review aimed to evaluate theories and determinants of self-care and self-efficacy in IBD patients. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Sci

Longitudinal Associations Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Silencing the Self, and Sexual Self-Efficacy in Adolescents.

Sexual self-efficacy-the belief in one's ability to engage in desired and to refuse unwanted, sexual activities and behaviors-is an important feature in promoting adolescent sexual health and well-being. One factor that may affect the development of sexual self-efficacy is child sexual abuse. However, little is known about the processes underlying the relation between child sexual abuse and sexual self-efficacy. Using longitudinal data from a sample of 739 adolescent girls and boys aged between 14 and 18 years, we examined the mediational role of two "silencing the self" attitudes and behavior
