Disentangling Semantic Composition and Semantic Association in the Left Temporal Lobe.

Although composing two words into a complex representation (e.g., "coffee cake") is conceptually different from forming associations between a pair of words (e.g., "coffee, cake"), the brain regions supporting semantic composition have also been implicated for associative encoding. Here, we adopted a two-word magnetoencephalography (MEG) paradigm which varies compositionality ("French/Korean cheese" vs "France/Korea cheese") and strength of association ("France/French cheese" vs "Korea/Korean cheese") between the two words. We collected MEG data while 42 English speakers (24 females) viewed th

The neural basis of semantic memory: evidence from semantic dementia.

Semantic dementia (SD) is a syndrome of progressive impairment in semantic memory. Fifty-eight brain regions were measured in seven post mortem SD cases, ten normal controls and two disease controls (diagnosis frontotemporal dementia and motor neuron disease, FTD-MND). Manual segmentation of the whole brain has not previously been undertaken in a series of SD cases, either post mortem or during life. Widespread volume loss relative to controls was found in SD, with anterior temporal lobe regions bearing the brunt (>60% atrophy of temporopolar and perirhinal cortices bilaterally). Comparison of

SREF: Semantics-Refined Feature Extraction for Long-Term Visual Localization.

Accurate and robust visual localization under changing environments remains a fundamental challenge in autonomous driving and mobile robotics. Traditional handcrafted features often degrade under long-term illumination and viewpoint variations, while recent CNN-based methods, although more robust, typically rely on coarse semantic cues and remain vulnerable to dynamic objects. In this paper, we propose a fine-grained semantics-guided feature extraction framework that adaptively selects stable keypoints while suppressing dynamic disturbances. A fine-grained semantic refinement module subdivides

Sex determination and sex reversal: genotype, phenotype, dogma and semantics.

The genetic terminology of sex determination and sex differentiation is examined in relation to its underlying biological basis. On the assumption that the function of the testis is to produce hormones and spermatozoa, the hypothesis of a single Y-chromosomal testis-determining gene with a dominant effect is shown to run counter to the following observed facts: a lowering in testosterone levels and an increase in the incidence of undescended testes, in addition to sterility, in males with multiple X chromosomes; abnormalities of the testes in autosomal trisomies; phenotypic abnormalities of XX

Deregulated semantic cognition contributes to object-use deficits in Alzheimer's disease: A comparison with semantic aphasia and semantic dementia.

Executive control is impaired from the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and this produces deregulated semantic cognition (Corbett, Jefferies, Burns, & Lambon Ralph, ; Perry, Watson, & Hodges, ). While control deficits should affect semantic retrieval across all modalities, previous studies have typically focused on verbal semantic tasks. Even when non-verbal semantic tasks have been used, these have typically employed simple picture-matching tasks, which may be influenced by abnormalities in covert naming. Therefore, in the present study, we examined 10 patients with AD on a battery of

Semantic word category processing in semantic dementia and posterior cortical atrophy.

There is general agreement that perisylvian language cortex plays a major role in lexical and semantic processing; but the contribution of additional, more widespread, brain areas in the processing of different semantic word categories remains controversial. We investigated word processing in two groups of patients whose neurodegenerative diseases preferentially affect specific parts of the brain, to determine whether their performance would vary as a function of semantic categories proposed to recruit those brain regions. Cohorts with (i) Semantic Dementia (SD), who have anterior temporal-lob

Mining Semantic Correlations Between Mispredictions and Corrections for Interactive Semantic Segmentation.

Interactive semantic segmentation pursues high-quality segmentation results at the cost of a small number of user clicks. It is attracting more and more research attention for its convenience in labeling semantic pixel-level data. Existing interactive segmentation methods often pursue higher interaction efficiency by mining the latent information of user clicks or exploring efficient interaction manners. However, these works neglect to explicitly exploit the semantic correlations between user corrections and model mispredictions, thus suffering from two flaws. First, similar prediction errors

Neural dynamics of semantic categorization in semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

Semantic representations are processed along a posterior-to-anterior gradient reflecting a shift from perceptual (e.g., it has eight legs) to conceptual (e.g., venomous spiders are rare) information. One critical region is the anterior temporal lobe (ATL): patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), a clinical syndrome associated with ATL neurodegeneration, manifest a deep loss of semantic knowledge. We test the hypothesis that svPPA patients perform semantic tasks by over-recruiting areas implicated in perceptual processing. We compared MEG recordings of svPPA patients

Evaluating Semantic Knowledge Through a Semantic Association Task in Individuals With Dementia.

Conceptual knowledge is supported by multiple semantic systems that are specialized for the analysis of different properties associated with object concepts. Various types of semantic association between concrete concepts-categorical (CA), encyclopedic (EA), functional (FA), and visual-encyclopedic (VEA) associations-were tested through a new picture-to-picture matching task (semantic association task, SAT). Forty individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD), 13 with behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bv-FTD), 6 with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and 37 healthy participants were

The impact of semantic memory impairment on spelling: evidence from semantic dementia.

We assessed spelling and reading abilities in 14 patients with semantic dementia (with varying degrees of semantic impairment) and 24 matched controls, using spelling-to-dictation and single-word reading tests which manipulated regularity of the correspondences between spelling and sound, and word frequency. All of the patients exhibited spelling and reading deficits, except at the very earliest stages of disease. Longitudinal study of seven of the patients revealed further deterioration in spelling, reading, and semantic memory. The performance of both subject groups on both spelling and read

Who, What, and Where: Composite-Semantics Instance Search for Story Videos.

Who, What and Where (3W)are the three core elements of storytelling, and accurately identifying the 3W semantics is critical to understanding the story in a video. This paper studies the 3W composite-semantics video Instance Search (INS) problem, which aims to find video shots about a specific person doing a concrete action in a particular location. The popular Complete-Decomposition (CD) methods divide a composite-semantics query into multiple single-semantics queries, which are likely to yield inaccurate or incomplete retrieval results due to neglecting important semantic correlations. Unveiling EMG semantics: a prototype-learning approach to generalizable gesture classification.

Objective.Upper limb loss can profoundly impact an individual's quality of life, posing challenges to both physical capabilities and emotional well-being. To restore limb function by decoding electromyography (EMG) signals, in this paper, we present a novel deep prototype learning method for accurate and generalizable EMG-based gesture classification. Existing methods suffer from limitations in generalization across subjects due to the diverse nature of individual muscle responses, impeding seamless applicability in broader populations.Approach.By leveraging deep prototype learning, we introdu

Right temporal degeneration and socioemotional semantics: semantic behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia.

Focal anterior temporal lobe degeneration often preferentially affects the left or right hemisphere. While patients with left-predominant anterior temporal lobe atrophy show severe anomia and verbal semantic deficits and meet criteria for semantic variant primary progressive aphasia and semantic dementia, patients with early right anterior temporal lobe atrophy are more difficult to diagnose as their symptoms are less well understood. Focal right anterior temporal lobe atrophy is associated with prominent emotional and behavioural changes, and patients often meet, or go on to meet, criteria fo

Differential Involvement of the Anterior Temporal Lobes in Famous People Semantics.

The ability to recognize a famous person occurs through semantic memory. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) are involved in the recognition of famous people. However, it is still a matter of debate whether the semantic processing of names or pictures of famous people has an impact on the activation of ATLs. The aim of this study was to explore the pattern of activation associated with a semantic processing of famous people based on face and written name stimuli. Fifteen healthy young individuals participated in our fMRI study, in which they were as

Reading lexically without semantics: evidence from patients with probable Alzheimer's disease.

Recent modifications of the lexical model of oral reading make the prediction that under conditions where sublexical reading processes alone cannot achieve the target pronunciation (i.e., when words have exceptional spellings or when sublexical processes are impaired), patients with severe semantic impairment should have more difficulty reading aloud semantically impaired words than semantically retained words. In a battery of lexical-semantic and reading tasks, two neurologically normal control subjects and two subjects with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and only moderate semantic impairm

Multiple meaning systems in the brain: a case for visual semantics.

In this study we report our investigations of a category specific visual associative agnosia. The patient D.R.S.'s spoken language skills were excellent. Although he could name objects from their description, he was unable to name them by sight nor was he able to mime their use. On visual-visual matching tasks his performance was impaired and affected by semantic proximity. In two tasks his knowledge of visual objects was demonstrated to be significantly more impaired than his knowledge of visual living things. It is argued that these findings support a multiple knowledge base hypothesis.

Civil commitment practices in 1977: troubled semantics and/or troubled psychiatry.

This paper examines the practice of involuntary mental hospitalization through examination of criteria used for committment in a sample of 200 civil commitment certificates. Special reference is made, following previous research, to criteria used to describe the person deemed dangerous to himself or to others. The relevance of the findings of present practices in mental health is discussed. New procedures which facilitate presentation of factual evidence, and which eliminate gratuitous information, are required without delay.
