Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) is caused by a bony defect of the superior semicircular canal. The bony defect allows low-frequency acoustic stimuli of high intensity to travel to the vestibular organ. This can be induced by sound stimuli or pressure stimuli leading to vertigo, torsional nystagmus, pulsatile tinnitus, hyperacusis, hearing loss and autophony. SCDS is diagnosed with provocative testing, audiometry, CT-scan, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and electrocochleography. Treatment is conservative, however, surgery with occlusion of the defect can be necessa

Superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) is a vestibular disorder caused by a pathologic third window into the labyrinth that can present with autophony, sound- or pressure-induced vertigo, and chronic disequilibrium among other vestibulocochlear symptoms. Careful history taking and examination in conjunction with appropriate diagnostic testing can accurately diagnose the syndrome. Key examination techniques include fixation-suppressed ocular motor examination investigating for sound- or pressure-induced eye movements in the plane of the semicircular canal. Audiometry, vestibular evoked myoge

The purpose of this paper is to present a surgical method for microtia(small auricle, small external audiotory meatus and small tympanic membrane). 7 cases received fenestration of semicircular canal. During the operation it was found that the patients had congenital absence of oval windows and stapes, significant low position of horizontal facial canal covering the oval windows. It was impossible to perform labyrinthotomy in these patients. The only choice of operation is fenestration of semicircular canal. 7 ears underwent the operation as described. 6 weeks-21 months follow-up showed that a

Transduction in the semicircular canal was studied by focusing an infrared beam on either side of exposed ampullae from the posterior canals of Rana pipiens. The direction of fluid movement resulting from a stimulus was inferred by observing the polarity of the change in afferent impulse mean rate relative to the spontaneous value. On the basis of the accepted functional polarization of this receptor, the results indicate that fluid moved toward the warmer side of the ampulla. Convection and thermal reception were shown to be unlikely explanations for these results. Morover, cupular displaceme

The cranio-mandibular syndrome (CMS) is often secondary to an cranio-facial asymmetry (CFA); it associate a painful masticatory dysfunction syndrome with functional and aching clinical signs in relation with a functional torticollis required for oculo-labyrinthal equilibration maintenance. Our anatomical and functional MRI protocol uses tridimensional study of semi-circular canals (SCC) up relation to the medial cerebral axis (MCA), and permit to measure precisely these CFA and propose, with a multispecialist approach, an adapted treatment of the SCM. Application of MRI to SCC asymmetry looks

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the vestibular endolymphatic hydrops in patients with semicircular canal malformation.
METHODS: We searched 7864 patients who underwent MR Imaging after contrast injection and found 21 patients with semicircular canal malformations. Another 9 non-malformed patients with unilateral hearing loss were randomly included. We asked patients about their medical history and measured the volume of total vestibular fluid space and endolymphatic space. The vestibular volume ratio = endolymphatic space/total fluid space × 100.
RESULTS: Hearing loss was observed in 18 of 30 malf

BACKGROUND: Described just over 20 years ago, superior semicircular canal dehiscence remains a relatively unknown and easily missed cause of dizziness and auditory symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: This review focused on the origin, presenting symptoms and underlying pathophysiology of superior semicircular canal dehiscence, and the available treatment options.
MAIN FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION: The bony dehiscence acts as a 'third window', affecting inner-ear homeostasis, and resulting in hypersensitivity and a vestibular response to lower sound level stimuli. The third window effect explains the pressure- a

Horizontal canal fistulas are not uncommon in patients with cholesteatoma. Patients with canal wall down cavities and exposed horizontal canal fistulas develop significant dizziness with wind or suction exposure. Obliteration of mastoid cavities in patients with exposed fistulas can be challenging. We describe a patient with horizontal canal fistula and chronic dizziness from wind exposure who underwent successful mastoid cavity obliteration with preservation of hearing. Patients with horizontal canal fistulas in a canal wall down cavity can be managed with mastoid obliteration for relief of d

We report the case of a 69-year-old man with a history of mastoidectomy for cholesteatoma, who developed spontaneous spinning vertigo on debridement of his cavity. Subsequent CT confirmed a lateral semicircular canal fistula, which was surgically closed with mastoid cavity obliteration. Following surgery, he developed a spontaneous, pulse-synchronous horizontal pendular nystagmus. We discuss the pathophysiology of this rare clinical sign.

OBJECTIVES: The present study sought to determine whether there is a correlation between the prevalence of superior semicircular canal (SSC) dehiscence (SSCD) on temporal CT and population age. The secondary objective was to identify anatomic factors for SSCD by studying SSC diameter and its protrusion into the middle cranial fossa. The aim was to determine the acquired or congenital origin of SSCD (Minor's syndrome).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A single-center retrospective radiological and anatomic study included 180 CT scans of 354 petrous parts of the temporal bone taken between January and Dece
