Somatic referral of visceral sensations and rectal sensory threshold for pain in children with functional gastrointestinal disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that abdominal pain related to functional gastrointestinal disorders is associated with visceral hypersensitivity and abnormal perception of visceral sensations. STUDY DESIGN: We examined 35 children (10-17.6 years old) fulfilling the Rome II criteria with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS; n = 21), functional abdominal pain (FAP; n = 8) or functional dyspepsia (FD; n = 6) compared with 10 control subjects (10.2-16.1 years). All underwent a rectal barostat examination. Painful sensations were reported on a human body diagram. The projections of sensations induced

The Association Between Causality Orientation and Internet Gaming Disorder, and the Role of Sensation Seeking, Anxiety, and Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Self-determination theory (SDT) deems that people have three causality orientations: autonomy orientation, control orientation, and impersonal orientation. Previous studies suggested that lower autonomy orientation or higher control and impersonal orientations may be associated with more addictive behaviors. Our study aimed to investigate if these associations exist in Internet gaming disorder (IGD), and if sensation seeking, anxiety, and depression could influence the associations between causality orientations and IGD symptoms. METHODS: A total of 1,400 college students completed

Anxiety and hypervigilance to cardiopulmonary sensations in non-cardiac chest pain patients with and without psychiatric disorders.

We investigated body vigilance, cardiac anxiety, and the mediating role of interoceptive fear on pain in patients with non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP; a syndrome of chest pain in the absence of identifiable organic etiology). Patients were more attentive to cardiac-congruent sensations than cardiac-incongruent sensations (e.g., gastrointestinal, cognitive dyscontrol; p's < .001). Patients with a DSM-IV Axis I anxiety or mood disorder were more body vigilant compared to patients who did not have a disorder (p's < .05). Patients with anxiety disorders were particularly vigilant to and fearful of c

Relationships between catastrophic cognitions and body sensations in anxiety disordered, mixed diagnosis, and normal subjects.

Clark's (Behaviour Research and Therapy, 24, 461-470, 1986) cognitive model proposes that panic attacks result from the catastrophic misinterpretation of certain body sensations. The present study examined correlations between feared body sensations and catastrophic cognitions. It was hypothesized that regardless of diagnostic status meaningful correlations between sensations and cognitions would be obtained. Three groups--anxiety disordered patients (n = 33), nonanxiety disordered patients (n = 57), and normals (n = 60)--completed the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire and the Body Sensatio

Effect of glucocorticoids on smell sensation in patients with non-traumatic olfactory disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of glucocorticoids (GCs) for treating non-traumatic olfactory disorders (ODs) remains controversial, with existing meta-analyses showing inconsistent results, largely due to variations in included studies and a lack of etiology-specific analysis. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42022319449). We searched four databases up to December 2025 for studies assessing GCs therapy in adults with non-traumatic ODs. Efficacy was analyzed by etiology, with the primary outcome being the standardized mean difference

Catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations and external events in panic disorder, other anxiety disorders, and healthy subjects: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The catastrophic misinterpretation model of panic disorder (PD) predicts that the catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations is a distinctive characteristic of PD. Existing research on this prediction has produced mixed findings. This paper presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing the strength of catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations and external events in patients with PD, patients with other anxiety disorders, and healthy controls. Following a systematic screening, seven studies were included in the meta-analysis. For the catastrophic misinte

Neurogenetic and multi-omic sources of overlap among sensation seeking, alcohol consumption, and alcohol use disorder.

Sensation seeking is bidirectionally associated with levels of alcohol consumption in both adult and adolescent samples and shared neurobiological and genetic influences may in part explain this association. Links between sensation seeking and alcohol use disorder (AUD) may primarily manifest via increased alcohol consumption rather than through direct effects on increasing problems and consequences. Heightened visceral sensation in functional gastrointestinal disease is not site-specific. Evidence for a generalized disorder of gut sensitivity.

Alteration in visceral sensation locally at the site of presumed symptom origin in the gastrointestinal tract has been proposed as an important etiopathological mechanism in the so-called functional bowel disorders. Patients presenting with one functional gastrointestinal syndrome, however, frequently have additional symptoms referable to other parts of the gut, suggesting that enhanced visceral nociception may be a panintestinal phenomenon. We measured the sensory thresholds for initial perception (IP), desire to defecate (DD), and urgency (U) in response to rectal balloon distension, and the

Assessment instrument for panic disorder that includes fear of sensation-producing activities: the Albany Panic and Phobia Questionnaire.

A set of items was developed to assess fear of activities which produce physical sensations (e.g., exercise) based on clinical observations that individuals with panic disorder fear such activities in addition to agoraphobic situations. Factor analysis of a 32-item pool based on responses from 438 subjects confirmed three distinct factors which were labelled: agoraphobia, social phobia, and interoceptive fears. Evidence was obtained to support the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity of all three factors. Importantly, the interoceptive factor demonstrated a sli

Machine learning model for reproducing subjective sensations and alleviating sound-induced stress in individuals with developmental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: An everyday challenge frequently encountered by individuals with developmental disorders is auditory hypersensitivity, which causes distress in response to certain sounds and the overall sound environment. This study developed deep neural network (DNN) models to address this issue. One model predicts changes in subjective sound perception to quantify auditory hypersensitivity characteristics, while the other determines the modifications needed to sound stimuli to alleviate stress. These models are expected to serve as a foundation for personalized support systems for individuals

Early Adolescent Trajectories of Impulsiveness and Sensation Seeking in Children of Fathers with Histories of Alcohol and Other Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Problem substance use often begins in adolescence. This vulnerability likely stems, at least partially, from relatively rapid increases in sensation seeking occurring in early to mid-adolescence and more gradual improvements in impulse control occurring through later adolescence. Better understanding how these processes develop in high-risk youth may lead to enhanced substance use disorder treatment and prevention strategies. METHODS: We characterized trajectories of self-reported impulsivity and sensation seeking in 305 FH+ youths who at minimum had a father with a history of alc

Pain, Dryness, and Itch Sensations in Eye Surface Disorders Are Defined By a Balance Between Inflammation and Sensory Nerve Injury.

Patients with corneal and conjunctival disorders report an array of ocular surface symptoms including stinging, foreign body sensation, and itching. The intensity and perceptual quality of these sensations and their duration, from brief intervals to long-term symptoms, also vary. We hypothesize that symptomatic differences across disorders reflect differences in the balance between ocular inflammation and nerve injury, with different conditions resulting from predominant effects of one of these, or a combined effect. This article provides an overview of corneal and conjunctival nerve cells, su

Is Sensation Seeking a correlate of excessive behaviors and behavioral addictions? A detailed examination of patients with Gambling Disorder and Internet Addiction.

Sensation Seeking has repeatedly been related to substance use. Also, its role as a correlate of Gambling Disorder has been discussed although research has led to heterogeneous results. Likewise, first studies on Internet Addiction have indicated increased Sensation Seeking, to some extent contradicting clinical impression of patients suffering from internet addiction. We assessed Sensation Seeking in a clinical sample of n=251 patients with Gambling Disorder, n=243 patients with internet addiction, n=103 clients with excessive but not addictive internet use, and n=142 healthy controls. A pilot study of sensation-focused intensive treatment for panic disorder with moderate to severe agoraphobia: preliminary outcome and benchmarking data.

This report presents results of a treatment for panic disorder with moderate to severe agoraphobia (PDA-MS) called sensation-focused intensive treatment (SFIT). SFIT is an 8-day intensive treatment that combines features of cognitive- behavioral treatment for panic disorder, such as interoceptive exposure and cognitive restructuring with ungraded situational exposure. SFIT focuses on feared physical sensations as well as agoraphobic avoidance. Preliminary data support the utility of SFIT in improving PDA-MS. The goal of this exploratory study was to further investigate the effectiveness of SFI

Willingness to experience unpleasant thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations at admission does not predict treatment outcome in inpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Some persons with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) refuse or drop out of treatment because of the aversive nature of exposure and response prevention therapy when they have to face and tolerate unpleasant thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. Indeed, one study suggested that a higher willingness to experience unpleasant thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations (WTE) predicts a better treatment outcome, but this finding has not been replicated yet. METHODS: We examined whether WTE at admission predicted treatment outcome in a sample of 324 inpatients with OCD who received

The effects of biofeedback on rectal sensation and distal colonic motility in patients with disorders of rectal evacuation: evidence of an inhibitory rectocolonic reflex in humans?

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities of descending colon motility reported in a subset of patients with rectal evacuation disorders are consistent with a rectocolonic inhibitory reflex. Our aims were to evaluate distal colon motor function and rectal sensation in such patients and assess effects of biofeedback (BF) training on these functions. METHODS: Seven patients (five women, two men; mean age 36 yr) with rectal evacuation disorders were studied before and after 10-days biofeedback training; six healthy volunteers (five women, one man; mean age 30 yr) were studied once. Colonic compliance, motility,
