Changes in the sense of agency: Implications for the psychotherapy of bulimia nervosa- A case study.

A sense of agency is a transtheoretical concept that increases our understanding of important processes in psychotherapy. Agency can be described in terms of how strongly the person believes that she can have an impact on her problematic experiences and behaviors. In this case study, a patient's sense of agency in relation to symptoms of bulimia nervosa was assessed during 3 years of psychotherapy. Five distinct phases of agency in relation to eating disorder symptoms were identified: A false sense of agency or no agency at all, a weak sense of agency, a nascent sense of agency, a wavering sen

Dissociation between key processes of social cognition in autism: impaired mentalizing but intact sense of agency.

Deficits in social cognition and interaction, such as in mentalizing and imitation behavior, are hallmark features of autism spectrum disorders. Both imitation and mentalizing are at the core of the sense of agency, the awareness that we are the initiators of our own behavior. Little evidence exists regarding the sense of agency in autism. Thus, we compared high-functioning adults with autism to healthy control subjects using an action monitoring and attribution task. Subjects with autism did not show deficits in this task, yet they showed significant mentalizing deficits. Our findings indicat

Moderate electrical muscle stimulation during voluntary movement does not disrupt the sense of agency or ownership.

Although electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is expected to alter the sense of agency (SoA) and sense of ownership (SoO) of a user's body parts, as well as brain activity during passive movements, these phenomena have not yet been systematically examined. Therefore, we investigated the SoA, SoO, and brain activity in situations where participants moved their wrists voluntarily, or where EMS was presented either during voluntary movement or at rest. Eighteen healthy individuals (16 males and two females; age: 18-29 years) participated in this study. The EMS intensity was varied from the motor t

Transcranial magnetic stimulation over the right temporoparietal junction influences the sense of agency in healthy humans.

BACKGROUND: The sense of agency is an important aspect of motor control. Impaired sense of agency has been linked to several medical conditions, including schizophrenia and functional neurological disorders. A complex brain network subserves the sense of agency, and the right temporoparietal junction is one of its main nodes. In this paper, we tested whether transcranial magnetic stimulation over the right temporoparietal junction elicited behavioural changes in the sense of agency. METHODS: In experiment 1, 15 healthy participants performed a behavioural task during functional MRI, with the

Diminished sense of agency inhibits paretic upper-limb use in patients with post-stroke motor deficits.

Post-stroke motor deficits often disrupt the voluntary control of body movements, leading to abnormal feelings. Among these, alterations in the sense of agency (SoA), the feeling of controlling one's movement, are notable because SoA facilitates actions. However, whether patients with more severe motor deficits experience poorer SoA and SoA's clinical impact on motor activity remain unclear. To address these questions, this longitudinal study quantified SoA in 156 post-stroke patients through factor analyses with multiple question items to differentiate SoA from potentially confounding discomf

Illusory Directional Sensation Induced by Asymmetric Vibrations Influences Sense of Agency and Velocity in Wrist Motions.

Illusory directional sensations are generated through asymmetric vibrations applied to the fingertips and have been utilized to induce upper-limb motions in the rehabilitation and training of patients with visual impairment. However, its effects on motor control remain unclear. This study aimed to verify the effects of illusory directional sensations on wrist motion. We conducted objective and subjective evaluations of wrist motion during a motor task, while inducing an illusory directional sensation that was congruent or incongruent with wrist motion. We found that, when motion and illusory d

Did I Do That? Expectancy Effects of Brain Stimulation on Error-related Negativity and Sense of Agency.

This study examines the effects of expected transcranial stimulation on the error(-related) negativity (Ne or ERN) and the sense of agency in participants who perform a cognitive control task. Placebo transcranial direct current stimulation was used to elicit expectations of transcranially induced cognitive improvement or impairment. The improvement/impairment manipulation affected both the Ne/ERN and the sense of agency (i.e., whether participants attributed errors to oneself or the brain stimulation device): Expected improvement increased the ERN in response to errors compared with both impa

The tangled threads: Unveiling the interplay between the sense of body ownership and the sense of agency in impacting the bodily-self representation in eating disorders.

The feeling of owning a body (body ownership) and controlling its actions (sense of agency) contributes to the emergence of the bodily-self representation, whose alteration is at the root of the central psychopathology of Eating Disorders (EDs). Yet, studies addressing these aspects in EDs provided inconsistent results. Here, we simultaneously test body ownership and sense of agency in EDs compared to controls by exploiting different rubber hand illusion (RHI) paradigms (i.e., classic visuo-tactile, passive and active visuo-motor versions). In any RHI versions, no differences in the susceptibi

Sense of agency and its disturbances: A systematic review targeting the intentional binding effect in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Sense of agency (SoA) indicates a person's ability to perceive her/his own motor acts as actually being her/his and, through them, to exert control over the course of external events. Disruptions in SoA may profoundly affect the individual's functioning, as observed in several neuropsychiatric disorders. This is the first article to systematically review studies that investigated intentional binding (IB), a quantitative proxy for SoA measurement, in neurological and psychiatric patients. Eligible were studies of IB involving patients with neurological and/or psychiatric disorders. We included

The 'healthy side' of anosognosia for hemiplegia: Increased sense of agency for the unimpaired limb or motor compensation?

OBJECTIVES: Anosognosic patients show a lack of awareness for their hemiplegia coupled with a distorted sense of agency for the actions performed by the plegic limbs. Since anosognosia is often associated with right brain damage, this hemisphere seems to play a dominant role in monitoring awareness for motor actions. Therefore, we would expect that anosognosic patients show distorted awareness and sense of agency also for actions performed with the unimpaired limb. METHOD: To test this hypothesis, we induced illusory actions that could be congruent or incongruent with a preceding verbal comma

Neural correlates of disturbance in the sense of agency in schizophrenia: An fMRI study using the 'enfacement' paradigm.

An altered sense of self-awareness and agency has been proposed to underlie symptoms of schizophrenia. In this study, we used the enfacement illusion paradigm - in which perception of another person's face leads to changes in perception of one's own peri-personal space - to examine the brain correlates of the sense of agency and its potential disruption in schizophrenia. Thirty-three schizophrenic patients and 27 healthy controls underwent fMRI scanning during performance of a task designed to elicit the enfacement illusion. Activations were examined using whole-brain analysis and also in an a

Agency and insecurities in (re)making a sense of home amidst later life homelessness: towards a conceptual framing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While there are concerns about homelessness and accommodation insecurity in later life, scholarly understanding of whether and how older people currently in homelessness can achieve a sense of home remains underdeveloped. We investigate the role of personal agency and environmental conditions in how older people perceive and construct a sense of home, amidst aging, homelessness, and insecurity across the life course. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: An inductive qualitative approach is employed and draws data from one focus group and 24 life-course interviews involving

Altered sense of agency in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: behavioural, clinical and functional magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Current neurocognitive models of motor control postulate that accurate action monitoring is crucial for a normal experience of agency-the ability to attribute the authorship of our actions and their consequences to ourselves. Recent studies demonstrated that action monitoring is impaired in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, a movement disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. It follows that Tourette syndrome patients may suffer from a perturbed sense of agency, the hypothesis tested in this study. To this end, we recruited 25 Tourette syndrome patients and 25 matched healthy controls in a

Near the self-other discrimination threshold, experience of goal-oriented movement increases the sensitivity of the sense of agency.

OBJECTIVES: The sense of agency (SoA) refers to the experience of controlling one's own motor actions and the external world through intention. According to the comparator model, SoA is generated when prediction signals from intended motor actions match the sensory feedback from actual outcomes, or when prediction errors are small. Previous work reported that SoA remained robust after short-term mismatch exposure, but in that study mismatches were far below individual detection thresholds and lacked external goals. This study examined whether the degree of sensorimotor mismatch in goal-directe

Neurocomputational Mechanisms of Sense of Agency: Literature Review for Integrating Predictive Coding and Adaptive Control in Human-Machine Interfaces.

BACKGROUND: The sense of agency (SoA)-the subjective experience of controlling one's own actions and their consequences-is a fundamental aspect of human cognition, volition, and motor control. Understanding how the SoA arises and is disrupted in neuropsychiatric disorders has significant implications for human-machine interface (HMI) design for neurorehabilitation. Traditional cognitive models of agency often fail to capture its full complexity, especially in dynamic and uncertain environments. OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes computational models-particularly predictive coding, Bayesian in

Mediators of psychotic-like experiences in community youths after trauma: positive sense of agency and post-traumatic stress symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure has been associated with the development of psychotic disorders in adolescence and young adulthood. Trauma can compromise the sense of agency, a predictor of psychosis. Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after trauma may also imply significant cognitive impairments that predispose young people to psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). This study investigates whether the two senses of agency subtypes - positive and negative agency, and PTSD symptoms mediated PLEs in youths after trauma. AIMS: The study aimed to explore the mediation of the sense of agency

Schizotypal personality traits and prediction of one's own movements in motor control: what causes an abnormal sense of agency?

BACKGROUND: Positive schizophrenic symptoms, especially passivity phenomena, including auditory hallucinations, may be caused by an abnormal sense of agency, which people with schizotypal personality traits also tend to exhibit. A sense of agency asserts that it is oneself who is causing or generating an action. It is possible that this abnormal sense of self-agency is attributable to the abnormal prediction of one's own movements in motor control. METHOD: We conducted an experiment using the "disappeared cursor" paradigm in which non-clinical, healthy participants were required to click on a

Did you hear your action? An ecological approach to the senses of ownership and agency.

The Sense of Ownership (SoO) and the Sense of Agency (SoA) are two key components of bodily self-consciousness. In this experiment, we investigated how they are affected by variations in the ecological validity of the moving Rubber Hand Illusion (mRHI) paradigm, which typically include three movement conditions: active congruent, passive congruent, and active incongruent. These conditions were either in a session in which no auditory feedback associated with finger-tapping was eliminated, or in a session in which such a feedback occurred. Since the presence of the auditory feedback more closel

Modulating the sense of agency in functional neurological disorder using real-time fMRI neurofeedback: a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Disrupted sense of agency (SoA), the perceived loss of control over one's actions, is common in functional neurological disorder (FND) and linked to abnormal activation in agency-related networks, particularly the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ). This proof-of-concept study tested whether fMRI neurofeedback (NF) could enhance SoA in FND by targeting the rTPJ. METHODS: In this single-arm feasibility study, 18 patients with mixed FND symptoms completed three NF trainings during an adaptive visuomotor task, receiving intermittent visual feedback of their rTPJ activity.
