The sense of coherence concept and its relation to personality traits in Swedish samples.

The paper proposes that Antonovsky's salutogenic orientation and his sense of coherence (SOC) concept provide a sound theoretical basis for the study and strengthening of the caring component in clinical practice. In order to study the operational utility of the concept, the 29-item SOC questionnaire (in two formats) was administered to five Swedish samples (3 groups of nurses, patients in a hospital emergency department, and a general population sample). Psychometric data are provided which test the internal and test-retest reliability of the SOC scale. A Self-Motivation Inventory (SMI) and t

Sense of coherence as a moderator of the effects of stressful life events on health.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that Antonovsky's concept of sense of coherence (SOC) moderates (that is, buffers) the health impacts of stressful life events in a population based sample. DESIGN: Multiple linear and Poisson regression analyses of longitudinal data from a national survey of population health were used to examine the relations among SOC, the experience of recent stressful life events (for example, family breakdown, financial crisis, physical abuse), and two outcomes, self reported health status (SRH) and self reported number of physician visits during the previous year

Effect of Caregiver's Sense of Coherence on Psychological Stress and Modifiable Factors in Childhood Asthma.

BACKGROUND: In managing certain clinical chronic diseases, the sense of coherence (SOC) in salutogenic theory is continuously assessed. However, no studies have yet focused on childhood asthma, a clinical condition closely associated with effective caregiver involvement. Therefore, we aimed to assess the role of maternal SOC in children's psychological stress and other modifiable factors affecting asthma control. METHODS: This observational, case-control study included 193 children with asthma (6-10 years) and their parents. The individuals were grouped into controlled (n = 97) and uncontroll

Incremental validity of the sense of coherence vis-à-vis depressive tendencies and dispositional aggression.

BACKGROUND: Sense of coherence (SOC) strongly predicts health-related indicators such as depressive tendencies and aggression. However, further investigation of its measurement, related factors, and theoretical positioning is essential. We examined whether SOC is a valid indicator of depressive tendencies, dispositional aggression, and other unique aspects, even when controlling for Dark Triad (DT) and Big Five (BF) traits. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: In this quantitative online cross-sectional study conducted in June 2019, data from 1,626 participants (759 men, 867 women; mean age = 29.90, S

Preoperative sense of coherence associated with the 10-year outcomes of lumbar spinal stenosis surgery.

A prospective 10-year follow-up study was conducted to determine the significance of the preoperative sense of coherence, with respect to the preoperative and 10-year clinical characteristics, among lumbar spinal stenosis patients ( N = 99). In addition, the predictive value of the preoperative sense of coherence regarding the 10-year surgery outcome was also evaluated. In a logistic regression analysis, a weak preoperative sense of coherence and low functional ability predicted the patients' functional ability 10 years after the surgery. Moreover, those patients with weak sense of coherence b

[Psychological complaints, interpersonal problems, quality of life and sense of coherence in former German warchildren].

Recently there is a growing psychotraumatological interest in late life effects in former German warchildren. The following article focusses on kind and amount of trauma and psychopathology (Symptom Check List 90-R; SCL-90-R) in elderly people, who have grown up during World War II. By means of psychometric self-reports we assessed their current interpersonal problems (Inventory of Interpersonal Problems; IIP), the quality of life (SF-36 Health Survey) and their sense of coherence (Antonovsky's Sense of coherence-Scale; SOC). Compared to norms from the general population and from "healthy cont

Living with fibromyalgia: sense of coherence, perception of well-being, and stress in daily life.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain syndrome that has a considerable impact on the ill person's daily life. The purpose of this study was to describe levels of sense of coherence (SOC), perceptions of well-being, and stress in daily life in women with FM in comparison with healthy women, and to determine whether SOC is related to perceived levels of stress and well-being. Thirty women with FM were compared with 30 healthy women matched for Type A behavior. The results revealed a complex picture of the women with FM. On the one hand, they reported many symptoms but, on the other, they rated the

Sense of coherence and health-related outcomes among patients with breast cancer: a systematic review.

Patients with breast cancer frequently experience substantial psychological burden and persistent symptoms. Sense of coherence (SOC), a central construct of the salutogenic framework, has emerged as a key psychosocial resource for chronic illnesses. However, its association with diverse health-related outcomes in patients with breast cancer has not yet been systematically investigated. This systematic review examined the association between SOC and health-related outcomes in patients with breast cancer. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

The association between Antonovsky's sense of coherence and job stress among dental hygienists in Korea.

OBJECTIVE: High stress levels experienced by medical professionals are a well-established phenomenon in current literature. However, there are few studies focusing on stress experienced in the field of oral health or on the sense of coherence (SOC) that helps to actively respond to job stress. The purpose of this study was to analyse if there is an association between SOC and job stress among dental hygienists in Korea. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of 441 dental hygienists in the Seoul Gyeonggi province, Korea. The independent variable was SOC which h

Fear of COVID-19, Perceived Stress, and PTSD: The Serial Mediating Role of Sense of Coherence.

The literature has identified that a sense of coherence plays a protective role in the relationship between adverse events and mental health. The current study examines the role of a sense of coherence (SOC) in the relationship between fear of COVID-19, perceived stress, and dimensions of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants (n = 322) were students at a metropolitan university in South Africa who completed the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, the 13-item Sense of Coherence Scale, and the PTSD Checklist. Predictors of sense of coherence in typically developing adolescent siblings of individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be a stressor for family members yet there is little published research on the impact of having a child with ASD on their typically developing (TD) adolescent siblings. According to Antonovsky's salutogenic model, a strong sense of coherence leads to the view that the stressor is a manageable challenge rather than a burden and promotes healthier adaptation. This study examines the relationship between stress, TD sibling resources and the sense of coherence in TD siblings. METHOD: This quantitative mail-based study uses a survey meth
