Enhanced high-frequency precuneus-cortical effective connectivity is associated with decreased sensory gating following total sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation decreases an individual's cognitive function. When cognitive impairment reaches a certain level, human errors occur and may even result in accidents. Previous research has shown that sensory gating is a basic mechanism in cognitive function, but only limited studies have so far reported how it is affected by sleep deprivation. This study aimed to analyze the effects of sleep deprivation on sensory gating and its cognitive and neural mechanisms. Thirty-six healthy subjects participated in our study. The resting-state, auditory P50-task electroencephalography (EEG) recordings a

Enriched and deprived sensory experience induces structural changes and rewires connectivity during the postnatal development of the brain.

During postnatal development, sensory experience modulates cortical development, inducing numerous changes in all of the components of the cortex. Most of the cortical changes thus induced occur during the critical period, when the functional and structural properties of cortical neurons are particularly susceptible to alterations. Although the time course for experience-mediated sensory development is specific for each system, postnatal development acts as a whole, and if one cortical area is deprived of its normal sensory inputs during early stages, it will be reorganized by the nondeprived

Occupational performance of a paced secondary task under conditions of sensory deprivation. II. The influence of professional training.

Twelve truck drivers operated the train function safety circuit (SIFA), a paced secondary task used as a job monitor on German railways engines, under laboratory conditions of extreme monotony, in a comparison with 12 train drivers who were well acquainted with SIFA. Alertness was determined by means of EEG evaluations. Heart rate was monitored as the parameter for physical load, and the precoded SIFA tasks as the active response parameter. In spite of significantly more frequent and more distinct decreases in alterness, the SIFA-trained subjects (TS) performed better. Nine out of 12 TS reache

The effect of sensory deprivation and mutant gene dosage on seizures and sustained attention in a mouse model of absence epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a frequent comorbidity in epilepsy, particularly absence epilepsy, but the mechanistic links between these conditions remain poorly understood. We evaluated attention and seizure susceptibility in a genetically tractable mouse model carrying heterozygous and homozygous mutations in Cacng2, a gene encoding an AMPA receptor-associated membrane protein implicated in both epilepsy and deficits in sustained attention. METHODS: Mice underwent sustained attention testing using the 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task (5-CSRTT) and electroe

Inner Hair Cell Loss Disrupts Hearing and Cochlear Function Leading to Sensory Deprivation and Enhanced Central Auditory Gain.

There are three times as many outer hair cells (OHC) as inner hair cells (IHC), yet IHC transmit virtually all acoustic information to the brain as they synapse with 90-95% of type I auditory nerve fibers. Here we review a comprehensive series of experiments aimed at determining how loss of the IHC/type I system affects hearing by selectively destroying these cells in chinchillas using the ototoxic anti-cancer agent carboplatin. Eliminating IHC/type I neurons has no effect on distortion product otoacoustic emission or the cochlear microphonic potential generated by OHC; however, it greatly red

Intrinsic sensory deprivation induced by neonatal capsaicin treatment induces changes in rat brain and behaviour of possible relevance to schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is considered to be a neurodevelopmental disorder with origins in the prenatal or neonatal period. Brains from subjects with schizophrenia have enlarged ventricles, reduced cortical thickness (CT) and increased neuronal density in the prefrontal cortex compared with those from normal subjects. Subjects with schizophrenia have reduced pain sensitivity and niacin skin flare responses, suggesting that capsaicin-sensitive primary afferent neurons might be abnormal in schizophrenia. This study tested the hypothesis that intrinsic somatosensory deprivation, induced by neonatal capsaici

High-throughput morphometric and transcriptomic profiling uncovers composition of naïve and sensory-deprived cortical cholinergic VIP/CHAT neurons.

Cortical neuronal networks control cognitive output, but their composition and modulation remain elusive. Here, we studied the morphological and transcriptional diversity of cortical cholinergic VIP/ChAT interneurons (VChIs), a sparse population with a largely unknown function. We focused on VChIs from the whole barrel cortex and developed a high-throughput automated reconstruction framework, termed PopRec, to characterize hundreds of VChIs from each mouse in an unbiased manner, while preserving 3D cortical coordinates in multiple cleared mouse brains, accumulating thousands of cells. We ident

The effect of tactile stimulation on spatial memory and hippocampal neuronal density in male rats with sensory deprivation during a critical period.

It is well known that sensory information driven from whiskers serves as an example of tactile perception in rodents, and plays an important role in social behavior, environmental exploration, and decision-making processes, the influence of manipulations performed during the development of whiskers, on learning has been received little attention in the literature. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tactile stimulation (TS) on spatial memory performance and neuronal density in the hippocampus during adulthood in early sensory-deprived rats. Wistar albino male rats were divided into four

From Sensory Deprivation to Psychosis: Environmental Mechanisms of Delirium in Dementia-An Eight-Year Retrospective Longitudinal Case Report and Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Delirium in patients with dementia is a multifactorial condition traditionally attributed to acute medical triggers. However, emerging evidence suggests that non-biological factors, including sensory deprivation and environmental instability, may contribute to delirium vulnerability, particularly in vulnerable populations. To explore the temporal associations between non-biological and environmental factors, particularly sensory deprivation and recurrent delirium in a patient with advanced Alzheimer's disease and progressive vision loss, a narrative review was conducted.

Sensory deprivation due to otitis media episodes in early childhood and its effect at later age: A psychoacoustic and speech perception measure.

BACKGROUND: Past research has reported that children with repeated occurrences of otitis media at an early age have a negative impact on speech perception at a later age. The present study necessitates documenting the temporal and spectral processing on speech perception in noise from normal and atypical groups. OBJECTIVES: The present study evaluated the relation between speech perception in noise and temporal; and spectral processing abilities in children with normal and atypical groups. METHODS: The study included two experiments. In the first experiment, temporal resolution and frequency

Seeing 'where' through the ears: effects of learning-by-doing and long-term sensory deprivation on localization based on image-to-sound substitution.

BACKGROUND: Sensory substitution devices for the blind translate inaccessible visual information into a format that intact sensory pathways can process. We here tested image-to-sound conversion-based localization of visual stimuli (LEDs and objects) in 13 blindfolded participants. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Subjects were assigned to different roles as a function of two variables: visual deprivation (blindfolded continuously (Bc) for 24 hours per day for 21 days; blindfolded for the tests only (Bt)) and system use (system not used (Sn); system used for tests only (St); system used continuously for

Occupational performance of a paced secondary task under conditions of sensory deprivation. I. Heart rate changes in train drivers as a result of monotony.

Twelve experienced train drivers were asked to operate the train function safety circuit (SIFA)--a paced secondary motor task which is expected to guarantee the driver's fitness for service on engines of the German Federal Railway--under laboratory conditions of extreme monotony. In spite of massive decreases in vigilance as shown by theta-activity in the EEG, all subjects were able to operate the device without major errors. A prerequisite for adequate performance is an EEG-defined arousal reaction, which is synchronized with the SIFA cycles. For 7 subjects the time-related cross-correlation

Damage-induced neuronal endopeptidase (DINE/ECEL) expression is regulated by leukemia inhibitory factor and deprivation of nerve growth factor in rat sensory ganglia after nerve injury.

Damage-induced neuronal endopeptidase (DINE) is a novel metallopeptidase and is expressed in response to various neuronal injuries. The expression regulation of DINE mRNA in the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) after sciatic nerve injury is examined. A substantial increase of DINE mRNA expression was observed in relatively small-sized DRG neurons after nerve injury. The expression was observed in isolectin B4-negative and partly TrkA-positive neurons, and the expression profile was fairly similar to that of the neuropeptide galanin. More than 80% of DINE mRNA-positive neurons simultaneously demonstr

The cloud of unknowing: Cognitive dedifferentiation in whole-body perceptual deprivation.

An altered sensory environment, especially a homogeneous one like a ganzfeld, can induce a wide range of experiences in people immersed in it. The ganzfeld of our current focus is the OVO Whole-Body Perceptual Deprivation chamber (OVO-WBPD). Previous literature has found this specific immersive environment to be capable of softening and dissolving perception of boundaries across time and sensory modalities, among other domains. Since recent published electrophysiological results demonstrated that immersion in the OVO-WBPD significantly increased delta and beta activity, in the left inferior fr

Deprivation amblyopia and congenital hereditary cataract.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of vision associated with decreased visual acuity, poor or absent stereopsis, and suppression of information from one eye.(1,2) Amblyopia may be caused by strabismus (strabismic amblyopia), refractive error (anisometropic amblyopia), or deprivation from obstructed vision (deprivation amblyopia). 1 In the developed world, amblyopia is the most common cause of childhood visual impairment, 3 which reduces quality of life 4 and also almost doubles the lifetime risk of legal blindness.(5, 6) Successful treatment of amblyopia greatly depends on early detect

Deprivation-Induced Plasticity in the Early Central Circuits of the Rodent Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory Systems.

Activity-dependent neuronal plasticity is crucial for animals to adapt to dynamic sensory environments. Traditionally, it has been investigated using deprivation approaches in animal models primarily in sensory cortices. Nevertheless, emerging evidence emphasizes its significance in sensory organs and in subcortical regions where cranial nerves relay information to the brain. Additionally, critical questions started to arise. Do different sensory modalities share common cellular mechanisms for deprivation-induced plasticity at these central entry points? Does the deprivation duration correlate

The pial vasculature of the mouse develops according to a sensory-independent program.

The cerebral vasculature is organized to supply the brain's metabolic needs. Sensory deprivation during the early postnatal period causes altered neural activity and lower metabolic demand. Neural activity is instructional for some aspects of vascular development, and deprivation causes changes in capillary density in the deprived brain region. However, it is not known if the pial arteriole network, which contains many leptomeningeal anastomoses (LMAs) that endow the network with redundancy against occlusions, is also affected by sensory deprivation. We quantified the effects of early-life sen

Oxytocin mediates early experience-dependent cross-modal plasticity in the sensory cortices.

Sensory experience is critical to development and plasticity of neural circuits. Here we report a new form of plasticity in neonatal mice, where early sensory experience cross-modally regulates development of all sensory cortices via oxytocin signaling. Unimodal sensory deprivation from birth through whisker deprivation or dark rearing reduced excitatory synaptic transmission in the correspondent sensory cortex and cross-modally in other sensory cortices. Sensory experience regulated synthesis and secretion of the neuropeptide oxytocin as well as its level in the cortex. Both in vivo oxytocin

A critical window for experience-dependent plasticity at whisker sensory relay synapse in the thalamus.

This study investigated the role of sensory experience in the refinement of whisker sensory relay synapses in the ventral posterior medial nucleus (VPm) of the murine thalamus. Sensory deprivation was done by whisker plucking, and synaptic connectivity was determined by whole-cell patch-clamp recording in acute slices. Sensory deprivation started at P12-P13, but not at P16, disrupted the elimination of VPm relay synapses. The majority of deprived neurons received multiple relay inputs, whereas the majority of nondeprived neurons received a single relay input. Sensory deprivation started a few
