Quantitative sensory testing of peripheral thresholds in patients with lifelong premature ejaculation: a case-controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: The main functional factors related to lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) etiology have been suggested to be penile hypersensitivity, greater cortical penile representation, and disturbance of central serotoninergic neurotransmission. AIMS: To quantitatively assess penile sensory thresholds in European Caucasian patients with lifelong PE using the Genito-Sensory Analyzer (GSA, Medoc, Ramat Yishai, Israel) as compared with those of an age-comparable sample of volunteers without any ejaculatory compliant. METHODS: Forty-two consecutive right-handed, fully potent patients with li

Gastric perception thresholds are low and sensory neuropeptide levels high in helicobacter pylori-positive functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In functional dyspepsia (FD) decreased perception levels can be shown on gastric distension. Substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are involved in the sensitization of afferent neuronal pathways due to chronic inflammation. The role of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric mucosal inflammation in the pathogenesis of FD is controversial. The aim of this study was to assess whether FD patients have altered mucosal concentrations of CGRP and SP, and to investigate whether this is associated with visceral hypersensitivity or H. pylori infection. METHODS: G

The Effect of Granisetron on Sensory Detection and Pain Thresholds in Facial Skin of Healthy Young Males.

Background: The specific serotonin type 3 (5-HT3)-receptor antagonist granisetron effectively reduces clinical as well as experimental muscle pain and hyperalgesia and with a duration that exceeds that of lidocaine. Hence, it may be an alternative to lidocaine as a local anesthetic. There are also some indications that granisetron in addition to 5-HT3 receptors blocks sodium channels. Thus, the local anesthetic effect by granisetron may resemble that of lidocaine, but this has not been tested. The aim of this study was therefore to compare the effect granisetron has on facial skin sensitivity

Measuring sensory and pain thresholds by Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments in patients with leg ulcers: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Pain is a common and disabling symptom in patients with leg ulcers. Clinical quantification of pain mostly depends on subjective pain reports, which do not reveal underlying mechanisms. The aim of this pilot study is to identify mechanisms underlying the pain in patients with leg ulcers by documenting alterations in pain processing using quantitative sensory testing. METHODS: In nine ulcer patients the mechanical sensory thresholds and the mechanical pain thresholds were determined by Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments (SWM) at three different sites: on the contralateral (unaffected) l

Argon laser induced cutaneous sensory and pain thresholds in post-herpetic neuralgia. Quantitative modulation by topical capsaicin.

Sensory and pain thresholds to cutaneous argon laser stimulation were determined in patients with post-herpetic neuralgia before and during treatment with topical capsaicin. Before treatment both thresholds were significantly elevated on the affected side compared to the contralateral normal area. After one week of capsaicin treatment both thresholds were significantly increased compared to the pre-treatment values, and the subjective pain relief, measured on a visual analogue scale (VAS) was 24%. More than 10% decrease in VAS pain score was obtained by 62.5% of the patients. Laser stimulation

Stress sensitivity and cutaneous sensory thresholds before and after neuropathic injury in various inbred and outbred rat strains.

Chronic pain is associated with altered affective state, stress, anxiety and depression. Conversely, stress, anxiety and depression can all modulate pain perception. The relative link between these behavioural constructs in different inbred and outbred rat strains, known to be variously hypo/hyperresponsive to stress has not been determined. Hindpaw sensory thresholds to repeated mechanical (von Frey filament and electronic Randall Selitto) and thermal (Hargreaves, cold plate and hot plate) stimulation were routinely assessed over three weeks in non-injured male rats of the following strains;

Auditory brainstem response latency in forward masking, a marker of sensory deficits in listeners with normal hearing thresholds.

In rodent models, acoustic exposure too modest to elevate hearing thresholds can nonetheless cause auditory nerve fiber deafferentation, interfering with the coding of supra-threshold sound. Low-spontaneous rate nerve fibers, important for encoding acoustic information at supra-threshold levels and in noise, are more susceptible to degeneration than high-spontaneous rate fibers. The change in auditory brainstem response (ABR) wave-V latency with noise level has been shown to be associated with auditory nerve deafferentation. Here, we measured ABR in a forward masking paradigm and evaluated wav

Previous recreational cold exposure does not alter endothelial function or sensory thermal thresholds in the hands or feet.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Does recreational cold exposure result in cold sensitivity and is this associated with endothelial dysfunction and impaired sensory thermal thresholds? What is the main finding and its importance? Previous cold exposure was correlated with cold sensitivity of the foot, which might indicate the development of a subclinical non-freezing cold injury. Endothelial function and thermal detection were not impaired in cold-sensitive individuals; therefore, further research is required to understand the pathophysiology of subclinical and clinica

Defining the perceptual threshold for hair volume: A method for aligning image-based quantification with sensory evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: Instrumental methods for measuring hair volume can detect physical differences that are not perceptible to consumers, creating a disconnect between in-vitro measurements and real-world perception. This study aimed to establish the Just-Noticeable Difference (JND) for hair volume and to develop a predictive model incorporating hair waviness to better align instrumental data with sensory evaluation. METHODS: Bulk volume and waviness were quantified from hair swatches using a custom image-analysis framework. Volume was determined via pixel intensity-based fibre density classification,

Reference intervals and sources of variation of pressure pain threshold for quantitative sensory testing in a Japanese population.

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is useful when analysing musculoskeletal pain disorders. A handheld algometer is most commonly used for pressure pain threshold (PPT) tests. However, reference intervals for PPTs are not elucidated. We assessed reference intervals of PPTs for QST in 158 healthy adult Japanese with no history of musculoskeletal or neurological problems. A handheld algometer was used to record PPT at five different assessment sites on the body: lumbar paravertebral muscle, musculus gluteus maximus, quadriceps, tibialis anterior muscle, and anterior talofibular ligament. [Cutaneous sensibility threshold in the feet of diabetic patients with pressure specified sensory device: an assessment of the neuropathy].

OBJECTIVES: Neuropathy is a severe progressive loss of protective sensation in the feet, increasing patient vulnerability to mechanical trauma and consequently more prone to development of chronic wounds, major distortion of the foot bone architecture and to eventual limb amputation. Prophylaxis should be enforced to avoid foot ulceration and for this purpose, evaluation of the degree of loss of sensation on the skin is essential. The PSSD (Pressure Specified Sensory Device) was developed to quantify the threshold of pressure applied to the skin that the patient might recognize as positive. Pr
