Serratia marcescens prosthetic joint infection: two case reports and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Despite some studies on Gram-negative bacteria as difficult to treat pathogens in periprosthetic joint infections, there are no detailed analyses on Serratia periprosthetic joint infections. As such, we present two cases of Serratia periprosthetic joint infections and summarize all known cases to date in the course of a PRISMA criteria-based systematic review. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: a 72-year-old Caucasian female with Parkinson's disease and treated breast cancer developed periprosthetic joint infection caused by Serratia marcescens and Bacillus cereus, following multiple prio

A Complicated Case of Serratia marcescens Infective Endocarditis in the Era of the Current Opioid Epidemic.

While bacteremia due to Serratia marcescens is not uncommon, it rarely causes infective endocarditis. We report an isolated case of a 53-year-old male with history of intravenous drug abuse who presented with multiple acute pain symptoms and was found to have S. marcescens bacteremia with septic emboli in his spleen, brain, and testes, secondary to a large aortic vegetation, as well as aortic infective endocarditis with severe aortic regurgitation requiring aortic valve replacement. His course of disease was further complicated by epidural and psoas abscesses and a necrotic testicle requiring

Serratia marcescens Bloodstream Infections in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Case Series From Rabat, Morocco.

Background Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic Gram-negative bacillus increasingly implicated in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) infections and severe neonatal sepsis, particularly among preterm infants. Methods We conducted a retrospective observational case series in the NICU of Mohammed V Military Teaching Hospital, Rabat, Morocco, between August 2024 and August 2025. Neonates with at least one positive blood culture for S. marcescens associated with clinical signs of sepsis were included. Clinical, laboratory, microbiological, imaging, therapeutic, and outcome data were analyzed. R

A long-term survey of Serratia spp. bloodstream infections revealed an increase of antimicrobial resistance involving adult population.

Serratia spp. is a well-recognized pathogen in neonates; however, limited data are available in adults. We studied microbiological and clinical characteristics of Serratia spp. causing bloodstream infections (BSI) in our institution (January 2005-July 2020). Overall, 141 BSI episodes affecting 139 patients were identified and medical records reviewed. Antimicrobial susceptibility was recovered from our informatics system and 118 isolates from 116 patients were available for further microbiological studies. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was completed in 107 isolates. Incidence of Serratia BSI w

Serratia marcescens as an Uncommon Cause of Infection Following Craniectomy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens) is a common bacterial species isolated from patients' specimens. Medical equipment like catheters, cannulas, tubing, dressing materials, and surgical instruments can become colonized by S. marcescens. Critically sick patients are the main victims, especially those in intensive care units or surgical settings where extended hospital stays and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics are typical. Although S. marcescens is commonly linked to bloodstream infections, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections, it is comparatively uncommon to be invol

Fatal hyperammonemia associated with disseminated Serratia marcescens infection in a pediatric liver transplant recipient.

Hyperammonemia is a rare and important complication post-liver transplantation. We review a case of a 5-month-old boy with biliary atresia who received a split liver transplant following a variceal bleed. The transplant was complicated by recurrent portal vein thrombosis. Colonized with Serratia marcescens pretransplant, he developed disseminated infection associated with very high levels of ammonia that led to his death. It is important to be aware of serum ammonia levels in patients with portal vein thrombosis, particularly in the setting of gastrointestinal bleeding and sepsis.

Necrotizing soft tissue infection caused by Serratia marcescens: A case report and literature review.

A 64-year-old man with advanced liver cirrhosis was transferred to an emergency center due to septic shock and markedly inflamed left leg. Under a clinical diagnosis of necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI), the patient undertook intensive therapy but died 25 h after arrival. The pathogenic organism, Serratia marcescens, was later isolated from blood and soft tissue cultures. NSTI is very rarely associated with S. marcescens. A literature review showed that only 16 such cases, including our case, have been reported to date. Our case is the first evidence of an S. marcescens NSTI in a patien

Endemic Serratia marcescens infection in a neonatal intensive care nursery associated with gastrointestinal colonization.

Serratia marcescens (SM) produced a prolonged outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit of high level gastrointestinal colonization (10(9) SM/g feces) which in the early part of the outbreak predisposed to respiratory infection. The early outbreak featured a strain of SM carrying a 54 X 10(6) dalton conjugative plasmid which mediated resistance to gentamicin, tobramycin and beta-lactam agents. The second part of the outbreak involved primarily gastrointestinal colonization with SM strains that were plasmid-free. Acquisition of SM was related to very low birth weight (less than 1500 g). Ulcerative dermatitis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, and desmitis caused by chronic infection with Serratia odorifera in a racehorse.

We investigated a case of severe Serratia odorifera infection in a racehorse. The horse had developed progressive lameness associated with swelling of the left tarsal region, which progressed to ulcerative dermatitis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, and desmitis. The plantar side of the superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendon was visible through the skin ulcer, and coalescing nodules were present in the dermis. The horse was euthanized and an autopsy was performed. Grossly, in addition to the changes described above, severe edema of the soft tissues was associated with the ulcer. Microscopically, n

Serratia marcescens thigh infection after transobturator sling without associated mesh exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue complications of the thigh occur after transobturator slings and are reported to uniformly accompany mesh exposure. Most commonly identified microorganisms cultured from such soft tissue infections include Bacteroides and Streptococcus species. This is the first reported case of Serratia marcescens leading to thigh cellulitis after a transobturator sling and the complication occurred in the absence of exposed mesh. CASE: A 54-year-old presented 7 days after a transobturator sling with right thigh cellulitis and sepsis in the absence of mesh exposure. She underwent ex

Debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention in infected shoulder arthroplasty caused by Serratia marcescens: a case report.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most devastating complications that can occur after shoulder arthroplasty. Although staged revision arthroplasty is the standard treatment in many cases, surgical intervention with debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) can be an effective option for acute PJI. We report a complex case of infected reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in a 73-year-old male. The patient had been previously treated for infected nonunion of a proximal humerus fracture caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis. He presented with a si

Serratia Liver Abscess Infection and Cardiomyopathy in a Patient with Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND Liver abscesses remain difficult to diagnose and treat. Risk factors include diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, and immunodeficiency. The majority are pyogenic, resulting from bacterial infection. Research identifies species in the Serratia genus as the cause of pyogenic liver abscesses in only 0.25% of cases and only 1 Serratia species in each case appears to have been identified. To the best of our knowledge, the present case report is the first to involve overlapping Serratia species in a single liver abscess infection that induced cardiomyopathy. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old woman

Sepsis and Hemocyte Loss in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) Infected with Serratia marcescens Strain Sicaria.

Global loss of honey bee colonies is threatening the human food supply. Diverse pathogens reduce honey bee hardiness needed to sustain colonies, especially in winter. We isolated a free-living Gram negative bacillus from hemolymph of worker honey bees (Apis mellifera) found separated from winter clusters. In some hives, greater than 90% of the dying bees detached from the winter cluster were found to contain this bacterium in their hemolymph. Throughout the year, the same organism was rarely found in bees engaged in normal hive activities, but was detected in about half of Varroa destructor mi

Serratia marcescens osteomyelitis of the clavicle and sternoclavicular arthritis complicating infected indwelling subclavian vein catheter.

Serratia marcescens bacteremia, osteomyelitis of the right clavicle, and septic arthritis of the right sternoclavicular joint developed in a 69-year-old woman after a right subclavian vein catheter was in place for five days. The infections were cured with the combination of gentamicin and ceftizoxime. There have been three previously reported cases of osteomyelitis of the clavicle following indwelling subclavian vein catheterization; two were caused by Staphylococcus aureus and one by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Cleft Lip Repair Associated Serratia marcescens Infection: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Cleft lip deformity is the most common birth defect, characterized by failure of the union of the medial nasal process and maxillary prominence. A variable range of cleft lips could be unilateral or bilateral, complete or incomplete, cleft lip with or without cleft palate. Diagnosis of a cleft lip is typically made through clinical examinations. Surgical repair is the ultimate management of cleft lips, which restores their normal appearance. Repairing a cleft lip could be associated with certain complications, including infection, dehiscence, notching, and post-op hypertrophic scarring. Nevert
