Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors of the ovary: a Taiwanese Gynecologic Oncology Group study.

OBJECTIVE: To report the natural history and prognosis of the uncommon Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) of the ovary. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 20-year retrospective review was conducted by the Taiwanese Gynecologic Oncology Group (TGOG), including nine tertiary medical centers from different regions in Taiwan. The medical records for 40 cases of ovarian SLCT were collected. Pathology reviews were carried out by a panel of expert pathologists. RESULTS: After pathological review, 17 patients were subsequently excluded because the pathology slides were unavailable in five cases, and discrepant

Laparoscopic management of Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors of the ovary. A report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor is a rare ovarian tumor with an incidence of < .5% of all ovarian tumors. Laparotomy is the standard approach to these cases. CASES: Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors were diagnosed in two young, nulliparous, infertile women. Both presented with secondary amenorrhea. Virilization was found in one. Their testosterone levels were high, and sonography revealed a solid, echogenic mass in the fornix. Laparoscopic removal was performed. Both women achieved normal menstruation one month after the operation, and one became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy infant. C

Elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein associated with Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors of the ovary.

Two young girls are described who presented with amenorrhea, large ovarian masses, elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), and signs of androgen excess. Whereas the findings of an ovarian mass and elevated serum AFP typically suggest an ominous diagnosis, ie, endodermal sinus tumor of the ovary, both of these patients were found at laparotomy to have Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors of the ovary. Unilateral oophorectomy rapidly led to undetectable AFP levels in both patients, and resumption of menses.

Incidental detection of a virilizing Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor during cesarean section: A case report.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors are a rare type of sex cord-stromal tumors that are mostly hormonally active (androgenic or estrogenic). Owing to the rarity of this disease, its impact on pregnancy is not fully understood. This report concerns a rare case of a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor incidentally discovered during a cesarean section. In a resource-poor setting, a 21-year-old woman was referred to hospital for her first childbirth. She had clitoromegaly for a few years, had never had a gynecological consultation, and had not received antenatal care during this pregnancy. Three hours after admissio

Thoracic Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor: An alternative type of pleuropulmonary blastoma associated with DICER1 variation.

A 2-year-old boy presented with a large cystic and solid chest mass arising from the lung, radiographically consistent with pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB). He underwent right lower lobectomy with resection of a well-circumscribed, mixed solid and cystic mass. The solid areas were composed of cords and nests of tumor cells in the myxoid stroma and retiform foci whose pathologic and immunophenotypic findings were consistent with a sex cord-stromal tumor with features of a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor. Tumor testing showed a pathogenic variant in the DICER1 RNase IIIb hotspot domain. Family history

[Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary: case study of a 22-year old woman].

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors are rare secreting mesenchymal and sex cord-stromal tumors. However, they constitute one type of tumor most often responsible for virilization syndrome. A definite diagnosis is provided by histological examination following surgical excision of the tumor. It has no characterizing features on ultrasonography, in spite of the strong clinical presumption. Like many neoplasias, prognosis is related to the degree of cellular differentiation and to the presence of heterologous elements. The aim of our study was to report the case of a 22-year old woman suffering from a rea

Cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor with congenital absence of unilateral ovary.

We report this first case of synchronous cervical rhabdomyosarcoma and Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) of ovary with congenital absence of unilateral ovary and fallopian tube in a 16-year-old female patient. A review of the English-language literature identified only six cases of double malignancies with cervical rhabdomyosarcoma and SLCT but none of the case was associated with congenital absence of ovary and fallopian tube. When such multiple conditions involving one system occur in an individual, the possibility of single etiology arises, but beside some hypothesis, no definite link could

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor: An unusual pathological presentation raising a therapeutic dilemma, a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (SLCTs) are rare, with a challenging diagnosis and management. Herein is our case. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 14-year-old female patient who presented with secondary amenorrhea with clinical signs of virilization. A pelvic MRI showed a solid-cystic intraperitoneal mass. The patient underwent surgery. A left adnexectomy, along with an omentectomy, peritoneal biopsy, and peritoneal cytology sampling, was performed. The histopathological examination confirmed a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the left ovary. While the majority of the tumor cells we

Postmenopausal mild hirsutism and hyperandrogenemia due to ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor: A case report.

Among several types of ovarian tumors, Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors are considered significantly rare, accounting for less than 1% of all primary ovarian tumors. Hirsutism caused by ovarian tumors accounts for approximately 1% of all cases of hirsutism. We report a case of a woman with a ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor who presented with hirsutism. A 45-year-old woman (gravida 12, para 2) who experienced menopause when she was 43 years old had excessive hair on her face and lower abdomen since 2 years. Her body mass index was 24.3 kg/m2. She also had hair growth on her upper lip, submandibular

Ovarian involvement by desmoplastic small round cell tumor with leydig cell hyperplasia showing an unusual immunophenotype (cytokeratin negative, calretinin and inhibin positive) mimicking poorly differentiated sertoli leydig cell tumor.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare aggressive tumor primarily involving serosal surfaces in adolescents and young men. Diagnosis is based on specific clinicomorphologic, immunohistochemical, and genetic features. We report here a variant of DSRCT involving the ovaries that mimics the Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in a 21-year-old woman complaining of abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a right adnexal mass. She had a slightly raised serum CA-125 level. Frozen section examination identified the right ovarian mass as a poorly differentiated Ser

Localization of small ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors by transvaginal sonography with color Doppler.

Color Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic modality that has been gaining popularity in the evaluation of gynecological tumors. It demonstrates blood flow in a visually familiar way, and facilitates detection of neovascularity in pelvic tumors. In this article we describe, for the first time, a case in which a small androgen-producing ovarian tumor was localized by color Doppler ultrasound after other non-invasive imaging techniques failed.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary with heterologous elements and carcinoid: an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study.

A Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary is described in which there were heterologous elements consisting of enteric cysts and an evolving carcinoid. Endocrine cells in the cysts and carcinoid were found to contain gastrin and other polypeptide hormones. Aspects of the organization of the enteric epithelium, its histogenesis, and the possible relationship of this tumor to other cystic ovarian neoplasms are discussed.

Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome with Bilateral Gonadal Sertoli Cell Lesions, Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor, and Paratesticular Leiomyoma: A Case Report and First Systematic Literature Review.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is a rare Mendelian disorder caused by mutations of the androgen receptor (AR) gene on the long arm of the X chromosome. As a result of the mutation, the receptor becomes resistant to androgens, and hence, karyotypically male patients (46,XY) carry a female phenotype. Their cryptorchid gonads are prone to the development of several types of tumors (germ cell, sex cord stromal, and others). Here, we report a 15-year-old female-looking patient with primary amenorrhea who underwent laparoscopic gonadectomy. Histologically, the patient's gonads showed Sertoli

Ovarian heterologous Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors with gastrointestinal-type epithelium. An immunohistochemical analysis.

Eight ovarian heterologous Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors containing gastrointestinal-type cells, including two tumors that contained carcinoids, were stained for argyrophilia and argentaffinity; in addition, these specimens were stained by immunohistocytochemical techniques for the demonstration of chromogranin, serotonin, and a variety of peptide hormones. Intestinal- and gastric-type epithelial and carcinoid cells within the tumors were focally argyrophilic and chromogranin-positive, but only intestinal-type epithelial and carcinoid cells contained argentaffin granules, serotonin, and corticotr

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor - a rare androgen secreting ovarian tumor in postmenopausal women. Case report and review of literature.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (SLCT) constitute only 1-0.5% of all primary ovarian neoplasms. We report a SLCT in a postmenopausal woman aged 69 years. The physical examination revealed severe hirsutism. Basal hormonal evaluation showed high plasma testosterone and estradiol values, with suppressed plasma gonadotropins. Computer tomograph scan revealed a right ovarian tumor mass of 4,3/3 cm, confirming an androgen secreting ovarian tumor. The histopathological and immunocytochemical examination established the diagnosis of well differentiated Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor. The tumor was positive for

15-Year-Old Patient with an Unusual Alpha-Fetoprotein-Producing Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor of Ovary.

Ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (SLCTs) are extremely rare ovarian sex-cord stromal tumors. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) production by SLCTs is a rare event generally linked to the presence of hepatocytes or intestinal mucinous epithelium as heterologous elements. We report here a case of a 15-year-old female complaining about abdominal pain, constipation, and spaniomenorrhea with high level of serum AFP leading to a clinical suspicion of malignant germ cell tumor. Final histopathological diagnosis was a moderately differentiated Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary with alpha-fetoprotein-prod

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in two siblings with DICER1 syndrome: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: DICER1 syndrome is an autosomal-dominant tumor predisposition syndrome associated with numerous cancerous and noncancerous conditions. The most common sex cord-stromal tumor associated with DICER1 syndrome is Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary (SLCT), which is extremely unusual and accounts for < 0.5% of all ovarian neoplasms. SLCT predominantly affects adolescents and young female adults. To date, there are only a few case reports of ovarian SLCT with underlying germline DICER1 mutations. The diagnosis and treatment of this rare malignancy remains challenging in the clinic main
