A description of 17 animal hoarding case files from animal control and a humane society.

This study describes 17 publicly available cases of animal hoarding, a special manifestation of hoarding disorder. The cases, which included court documents, animal service documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings, were reviewed by Masters-level clinicians and a veterinarian in private practice. The veterinarian rated the animals in the case files for possible neglect. Over half of the homes had signs of object hoarding. The most commonly hoarded animals were cats, dogs, and rabbits. The majority of animals in the cases reviewed required veterinary care. Individuals with animal hoarding

A Dog Is a Doctor's Best Friend: The Use of a Service Dog as a Perioperative Assistant.

Service dogs are beneficial in providing assistance to people with multiple types of disabilities and medical disorders including visual impairment, physical disabilities, seizure disorders, diabetes, and mental illness. Some service animals have been trained as a screening tool for cancer. We review a case involving a 6-year-old female with a history of mast cell mediator release and immediate hypersensitivity due to the urticaria pigmentosa variant of cutaneous mastocytosis who underwent a cystourethroscopy. Her service dog, JJ, who would alert to mast cell mediator release, was used through

'My dog is my life': One Health approaches to healthcare for people and their companion animals experiencing homelessness in the United Kingdom.

Around one in ten people seeking shelter from homelessness in the United Kingdom have a companion animal, most commonly a dog. Dog ownership when homeless can pose a barrier to accessing healthcare and accommodation, and may force individuals to sleep on the streets. People experiencing homelessness with a dog are therefore a stigmatised minority within a minority, often invisible to support services and hard to reach. The bond between human and canine in these situations is usually strong; the dog is often the most significant 'other' in that person's life. Failure to accommodate this relatio

Effect of heat stress on reproductive performances of dairy cattle and buffaloes: A review.

Heat stress has adverse effects on the reproductive performances of dairy cattle and buffaloes. The dairy sector is a more vulnerable to global warming and climate change. The temperature humidity index (THI) is the widely used index to measure the magnitude of heat stress in animals. The objective of this paper was to assess the decline in performances of reproductive traits such as service period, conception rate and pregnancy rate of dairy cattle and buffaloes with respect to increase in THI. The review stated that service period in cattle is affected by season of calving for which cows cal

A Multilevel Intervention Framework for Supporting People Experiencing Homelessness with Pets.

Approximately one in 10 people experiencing homelessness have pets. Despite the psychosocial benefits derived from pet ownership, systemic and structural barriers can prevent this group from meeting their basic needs and exiting homelessness. A multilevel framework is proposed for improving the health and well-being of pet owners experiencing homelessness. Informed by a One Health approach, the framework identifies interventions at the policy, public, and direct service delivery levels. Policy interventions are proposed to increase the supply of pet-friendly emergency shelters, access to marke

Reproductive performance of Japanese Black cattle: Association with herd size, season, and parity in commercial cow-calf operations.

The Japanese Black is the most common breed of beef cattle in Japan. However, only limited data are available on the associations of season, parity, and herd size with reproductive performance in Japanese Black cattle. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to determine the associations of these factors with reproductive performance parameters, such as the calving to first service interval (CFSI) and first service conception rate in Japanese Black cattle. Data were collected from 34,763 calvings in 13,186 animals from 826 commercial cow-calf operations in the Miyazaki prefecture, wh

Animal bites and rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, active and reserve components, U.S. Armed Forces, 2011-2018.

During 2011-2018, there were 22,729 diagnoses of animal bites among active and reserve component members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Of these, 899 (4.0%) were documented during medical encounters associated with deployments to overseas theaters of operations. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps members were affected by 55.6%, 23.5%, 14.2%, and 6.7% of all animal bites diagnosed in theater, respectively. More than four-fifths of total animal bite cases (82.4%) and bites diagnosed in theater (88.4%) affected enlisted members. The crude overall incidence rate of animal bite diagnoses was 175.7

"Is That Really a Service Dog?": How Service Dog Handlers With Invisible Disabilities in the United States Communicate to Manage Stigma With Implications for Policy and Interventions.

In the United States of America, the Americans with Disabilities Act allows for service dogs, dogs that are task-trained to assist disabled individuals in the management of their condition, to accompany their handler in public spaces. Recently, widespread media coverage of fake service dogs-pet dogs misrepresented as service dogs-has led to a perceived prevalence of fake service dogs. This, combined with a lack of knowledge about laws protecting service dog handlers, complicates the lives of legitimate service dog handlers, especially those with invisible disabilities who have no visible marks

The present and future organisation of Veterinary Services in Asia: the examples of the Republic of Korea and Japan.

The Veterinary Services of the Republic of Korea and Japan are reviewed and summarised. To cope with ever-increasing demands on Veterinary Services, both countries have made continued efforts to expand the services, which currently only have a limited number of government personnel. To overcome some of the problems associated with international trade, e.g. outbreaks of foot and mouth disease and classical swine fever (hog cholera), the authorities of the Republic of Korea are considering strengthening quarantine services by combining the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service and

Considerations for the Writing of Certification Letters Endorsing Use of Emotional Support Animals.

Emotional support animals (ESAs) are different from service animals, therapy animals, and other disability-related assistance animals. Although pet ownership may confer psychological benefits, limited research has supported the use of ESAs to realize such benefits. If clinicians are asked to write a letter of support for use of an ESA, they need to be familiar with relevant federal, state, and local laws that regulate ESAs and with the essential components of an ESA evaluation. This article provides an overview of terminology; federal, state, and local laws related to ESAs; and clinical and et

Impact of bovine neosporosis on reproductive performance of Girolando cows from a closed herd in Brazil.

Bovine neosporosis, caused by Neospora caninum, is a major cause of reproductive disorders and economic loss in dairy cattle worldwide. This study evaluated the association between N. caninum serostatus and reproductive performance in Girolando cows in a closed herd in Valença, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 144 cows were analyzed between September 2023 and April 2024. Blood samples were collected and tested for N. caninum antibodies using ELISA and confirmed by an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Reproductive indices, including the number of services per conception, service peri

Characterisation of the repeat breeding syndrome in Swedish dairy cattle.

Repeat breeding (RB), defined as cows failure to conceive from 3 or more regularly spaced services in the absence of detectable abnormalities, is a costly problem for the dairy producer. To elucidate the occurrence of RB in Swedish dairy herds and to identify risk factors of the syndrome totally 57,616 dairy cows in 1,541 herds were investigated based on data from the official Swedish production-, AI- and disease-recording schemes. The characteristics of the RB syndrome were studied on both herd and individual cow level. The effects of risk factors on the herd frequency of RB were studied by l

The Meaning of Social Support in Nature-Based Services for Young Adults with Mental Health Problems.

In previous studies, social context and social support have been found to be important in nature-based services. However, no studies have previously focused on the meaning of different dimensions of social support in these contexts. The aim of this study is therefore to uncover dimensions of social support in relation to mental health among young adults with mental health problems participating in nature-based services in Norway. This study applies data from a survey of 93 young adults participating in nature-based services; in addition, qualitative interview data from 20 interviews are also u

Factors associated with fertility outcomes in cows treated with protocols to synchronize estrus and ovulation in seasonal-calving, pasture-based dairy production systems.

Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with fertility outcomes in cows treated with protocols to synchronize estrus and ovulation. Lactating dairy cows (n=1,538) were enrolled in a completely randomized block design study to evaluate synchronization treatments. Within each herd (n=8), cows were divided into 3 calving groups: early [≥ 42 d in milk (DIM) at mating start date (MSD); n=1,244], mid (21 to 41 DIM at MSD; n=179), and late (0 to 20 DIM at MSD; n=115), based on DIM at MSD. Cows in the early-, mid-, and late-calving groups were synchronized to facilitate estrus or t
