Mineralization of equine proximal sesamoid bones precedes articular cartilage and fibrocartilaginous enthesis maturation in early postgestational development.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the development and maturation of equine proximal sesamoid bones (PSBs) in fetuses and young horses using radiography, microcomputed (micro)-CT, and histology. METHODS: A descriptive study. Forelimb PSBs from 12 equids ranging in age from 105 days of gestation to 540 days postgestation were evaluated. Radiography was used for preliminary assessment of metacarpophalangeal joint and PSB mineralization, and micro-CT imaging was performed to assess mineralized PSBs. Tissue volume, bone volume fraction, height, width, depth, trabecular thickness, and anisotropy were quantifi

Accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones of the ankle and foot: imaging findings, clinical significance and differential diagnosis.

Accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones are frequent findings in routine radiographs of the ankle and foot. They are commonly considered fortuitous and unrelated to the patient's complaint; however, they may eventually cause painful syndromes or degenerative changes in response to overuse and trauma. They may also suffer or simulate fractures. Our aim was to review, illustrate and discuss the imaging findings of some of the more frequent accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones of the ankle and foot region, with particular emphasis on those that may be of clinical significance or simulate fractures

Symptomatic Fracture of the Subhallucal Interphalangeal Sesamoid Bone: A Case Report.

The hallucal interphalangeal sesamoid bone can often be misdiagnosed when fractured and show presenting symptoms of forefoot pain. Primary presentation is asymptomatic but can become symptomatic in cases of trauma, overuse, or pressure to the area. However, even when symptomatic, misdiagnosis can often occur and lead to improper management that can exacerbate or prolong symptoms. This case is unique in revealing a rare anatomical variation and shows the proper approach to treatment and management from a prior misdiagnosis of right big toe pain without indication of a fracture.

Fracture of the Sesamoid Bone of the Thumb: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

CASE: Fracture of a sesamoid bone of the thumb is rare. We report a case of such a fracture after hyperextension of the thumb in a 26-year-old woman. After a volar plate injury was excluded, she was treated nonoperatively with 5 weeks of immobilization followed by physical therapy. CONCLUSION: After reviewing the current literature describing sesamoid fractures of the thumb, we recommend that fracture of the sesamoid of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint should be regarded as an avulsion fracture. The role of surgical intervention should be limited to patients with a painful nonunion.

Fabella prevalence rate increases over 150 years, and rates of other sesamoid bones remain constant: a systematic review.

The fabella is a sesamoid bone located behind the lateral femoral condyle. It is common in non-human mammals, but the prevalence rates in humans vary from 3 to 87%. Here, we calculate the prevalence of the fabella in a Korean population and investigate possible temporal shifts in prevalence rate. A total of 52.83% of our individuals and 44.34% of our knees had fabellae detectable by computed tomography scanning. Men and women were equally likely to have a fabella, and bilateral cases (67.86%) were more common than unilateral ones (32.14%). Fabella presence was not correlated with height or age

THE BONE SCINTIGRAPHY AS A COMPLEMENTARY EXAM IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF THE AVASCULAR NECROSIS OF THE SESAMOID.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to present seven cases of avascular necrosis of the sesamoid and report the role of bone scintigraphy in the diagnosis of these patients. METHODS: Seven patients with clinical suspicion of avascular necrosis of the sesamoid underwent three-phase bone scintigraphy with 30 mCi of (99m)Tc-MDP. RESULTS: Most of the patients were young female adults with complaints of limiting pain in the forefoot, who were making use of inappropriate footwear and/or had a history of injury with or without fracture. There was no predominance of either of the feet or between the femoral

Clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic and computed tomographic features of nonseptic osteitis of the axial border of the proximal sesamoid bones.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Lysis of the axial aspect of equine proximal sesamoid bones (PSBs) is a rare condition reported to have septic or traumatic origins. Limited information exists regarding imaging of nonseptic axial osteitis of a PSB. OBJECTIVES: To report the clinical, radiographic, ultrasonographic, computed tomographic and intra-arterial contrast-enhanced computed tomographic abnormalities in horses with axial nonseptic osteitis of a PSB. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. METHODS: Eighteen horses diagnosed with nonseptic osteitis of the axial border of a PSB between

A False Step in a Ballerina: A Rare Case of Osteonecrosis of Subhallucal Sesamoid Bone.

Subhallucal interphalangeal osteonecrosis is an uncommon cause of forefoot pain, and a rarely reported clinical entity, being often overlooked. Imaging, particularly computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have an essential role in early and differential diagnosis and guiding for appropriate therapy. The first approach should be conservative, and surgical treatment should be considered when it proves ineffective. In this case report, we describe a rare case of hallucal interphalangeal osteonecrosis manifesting a long-term hallux discomfort, successfully managed throu

A bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation at the sesamoid bone of the hallux: A case report.

A bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) is a rare, benign, osseous tumor that presents as an exophytic cortical growth consisting of bone, cartilage, and fibrous tissue. However, the identification of BPOP by preoperative imaging along with appropriate diagnosis and treatment without recurrence is challenging, particularly for BPOPs that rarely develop in certain parts of the body. Herein, we report a rare case involving a BPOP at the sesamoid bone of the hallux that was first suspected on preoperative computed tomography imaging. There has been no recurrence 3 years after

Epidemiology and imaging appearance of the normal Bi-/multipartite hallux sesamoid bone.

BACKGROUND: Turf toe is a hyperextension injury of the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint that can be difficult to diagnose on physical examination and imaging. Diastasis of the bi- or multipartite sesamoid of the hallux has been implicated as 1 potential radiographic finding of turf toe injury, and when present may require operative management. However, the normal interval for the bi-/multipartite sesamoid has not yet been established. METHODS: A total of 671 foot radiograph series were reviewed in effort to quantify the dominant interval of the bi-/multipartite sesamoid bone with respect to p

[Ulnar sesamoid bone of the small finger causing painful trigger finger].

We report on a 38-year-old woman suffering from painful trigger finger. Contrary to the expected intraoperative finding of a simple stenosing pulley and ganglion cyst on a thickened flexor tendon sheath, we found fibrotic cords between an abnormal ulnar sesamoid bone at the fifth finger and the A1-pulley to be responsible for distortion of the tendon sheath and a consecutive "klicking"-phenomenon. A coherence between sesamoid bones and trigger finger has repeatedly been found on the thumb but there is no such description regarding the long fingers.

Locking of the Metacarpophalangeal Joint of the Thumb Caused by Entrapment of the Radial Sesamoid Bone.

Locking of metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints of the thumb may be a consequence of dorsal subluxation from hyperextension injury. The joint is locked in mild hyperextension and cannot flex actively or passively. We report four patients with locked MCP joint of the thumb due to radial sesamoid entrapment after hyperextension or forced flexion injury. All patients had a prominent radial condyle of the metacarpal bone. Three patients had a deformity of the longitudinal groove on which the sesamoid was overlaid. The radial sesamoid was entrapped proximal to the radial condyle which could result in l

Human biological variation in sesamoid bone prevalence: the curious case of the fabella.

The fabella is a sesamoid bone located in the gastrocnemius behind the lateral femoral condyle. In humans, fabellae are 3.5 times more common today than they were 100 years ago, with prevalence rates varying between and within populations. In particular, fabellae have been assumed to be more common in Asians than non-Asians, equally common in men and women, potentially more common in older individuals, and bilateral cases (one per knee) appear to be more common than unilateral ones. The roles of genetic and environmental factors in this phenotypic variation have been hypothesized, but not rigo

Fracture of the distal sesamoid bone in horses: 17 cases (1982-1992).

Medical records of 17 horses in which a distal sesamoid bone fracture was diagnosed between 1982 and 1992 were reviewed. There were 8 Standardbreds, 6 Quarter Horses, 2 Thoroughbreds, and 1 Arabian. Mean age was 4.7 years. A forelimb was affected in 15 horses, and a hind limb was affected in 2. All horses were lame, and most were grade III/V lame at the trot. In all horses, the diagnosis was confirmed by means of radiography. Five horses were treated with stall rest alone; 5 underwent neurectomy; 4 were treated with stall rest and corrective shoeing; and 1 was treated with stall rest and exter
