Sex-linked gene expression and the emergence of hermaphrodites in Carica papaya.

PREMISE: One evolutionary path from hermaphroditism to dioecy is via a gynodioecious intermediate. The evolution of dioecy may also coincide with the formation of sex chromosomes that possess sex-determining loci that are physically linked in a region of suppressed recombination. Dioecious papaya (Carica papaya) has an XY chromosome system, where the presence of a Y chromosome determines maleness. However, in cultivation, papaya is gynodioecious, due to the conversion of the male Y chromosome to a hermaphroditic Yh chromosome during its domestication. METHODS: We investigated gene expression

Disorders of Sex Development in a Large Ukrainian Cohort: Clinical Diversity and Genetic Findings.

BACKGROUND: The clinical profile and genetics of individuals with Disorders/Differences of Sex Development (DSD) has not been reported in Ukraine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We established the Ukrainian DSD Register and identified 682 DSD patients. This cohort includes, 357 patients (52.3% [303 patients with Turner syndrome)] with sex chromosome DSD, 119 (17.5%) with 46,XY DSD and 206 (30.2%) with 46,XX DSD. Patients with sex chromosome DSD and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH, n=185) were excluded from further studies. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed for eight 46,XX bo

Evaluating the Scope of Language Impairments in a Patient with Triple X Syndrome: A Brief Report.

The phenotype of triple X syndrome comprises a variety of physical, psychiatric, and cognitive features. Recent evidence suggests that patients are prone to severe language impairments. However, it remains unclear whether verbal impairments are pervasive at all levels of language, or whether one domain is relatively more spared than others. Here we document the language profile of one patient with triple X, using standardized language tests and reports. Results concur in showing that impairments are noticeable both in expressive and receptive language skills, and in vocabulary as well as in st

A clue to the etiology of disorders of sex development from identity-by-descent analysis in dogs with cryptic relatedness.

Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are discrepancies between sex chromosomes and phenotypical sex. Quite common forms of DSD in canine populations include testicular and ovotesticular XX DSDs with a normal set of sex chromosomes. The objective of this study was to identify genes and putative harmful variants for canine XX DSDs. I have reanalyzed data from the whole-genome sequencing of 11 XX DSD French Bulldogs and six XX DSD American Staffordshire Terriers. Identity-by-descent analysis revealed cryptic relatedness in affected French Bulldogs. Causative genes were sought in chromosomal segmen

Sex differences in psychiatric disorders: what we can learn from sex chromosome aneuploidies.

The study of sexual dimorphism in psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders is challenging due to the complex interplay of diverse biological, psychological, and social factors. Males are more susceptible to neurodevelopmental disorders including intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, and attention-deficit activity disorder. Conversely, after puberty, females are more prone to major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders compared to males. One major biological factor contributing to sex differences is the sex chromosomes. First, the X and Y chromosomes have unique and specifi

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in two patients with chromosomal disorders involving the X chromosome.

INTRODUCTION: The etio-pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be explained using a biopsychosocial model. Little is known about obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in the context of chromosomal disorders involving the X chromosome. METHODS: Case studies of two patients with chromosomal disorders involving the X chromosome (Patient 1 with a variant of Turner syndrome and Patient 2 with triple X syndrome). RESULTS: Both patients were treated due to severe OCS. In the research MRI analysis, the most pronounced MRI change in both patients was a gray matter volume loss in the

A review of cytogenetics in equine reproduction.

The karyotype of the horse consists of 64 chromosomes; 18 pairs have a terminal centromere and 13 pairs a non-terminal centromere. Identification of individual chromosomes is enhanced by the use of band-staining techniques which allow recognition of minor structural rearrangements of chromatin material. Seven previously reported cases of male pseudohermaphroditism with chromosome studies are reviewed. Three were genetic females, one was basically an XX/XY chimaera, one was an XX/XXY chimaera, and one was an XXXY. Also reviewed is an infertile mare with 63 chromosomes and no distinguishable sex

[Genetic mechanism of human sex differentiation].

The genetic mechanism controlling sexual differentiation had remained unknown for a long time. Karyotype analysis of sex-inverted patients or individuals with ambiguous sexual differentiation has enabled the localization and identification of genes involved. It is currently known that the SRY gene is responsible for the initiation of a cascade reaction leading to male differentiation of the primitive gonad. SRY is a +/- 820 base pairs gene located on the small arm of the Y chromosome, more precisely within the 1A1 alpha sub-segment. Although a few other genes are known to be involved in the do

Meiotic Arrest and Synaptonemal Complex Failure in Infertile Men with Y Chromosome Microdeletions.

BACKGROUND: The Y chromosome microdeletions are common genetic cause of male infertility. Mechanisms of impaired spermatogenesis and meiosis, as well as phenotypic variability, have not been sufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: The paper provides results of the spermatogenesis and meiotic study based on the analysis of synaptonemal complex (SC) in the spermatocyte nuclei in infertile men with Y chromosome microdeletions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Examined cohort consisted of 9 male patients 27-32 years old with primary infertility with non-obstructive azoospermia. The patients had a 46,XY karyotype
