The sex ratio of 147 fetuses with presumed multifactorial neural tube defect (NTD) was studied. Overall, the ratio (males:females) was 0.73 with expected female excess. However, when the NTDs were subdivided according to the site of the lesion, the sex ratios varied. Total craniorachischisis, anencephaly with cervical spina bifida, holoacrania, and thoracic spina bifida showed a greater female excess than that overall; the sex ratio for meroacrania was close to unity, while that for low spinal lesions, particularly those involving the sacrum, showed an extreme bias towards males. These finding

With data from the birth registry of the Katsina Local Government Authority, the sex ratio was calculated for 1113313 Hausa children born alive between 1961 and 1980. The sex ratio was 1.07, which is significantly higher than the usually accepted value (less than 1.04) for populations of African origin. There was no seasonal variation or apparent relation to coital frequency or gonadotrophin levels. The sex ratio in another set of data comprising 5780 hospital births was 1.17 for normal and 1.31 for complicated deliveries. The sex ratio did not appear to be influenced by maternal age or parity

Natural selection is expected to maintain a stable 1:1 sex ratio in randomly mating populations. However, obligate parasites, especially nematodes with complex host-migratory life cycles, often show pronounced departures from this equilibrium. Ascaris suum, a globally distributed nematode with an XX/XO sex-determination system, exhibits an obvious female-biased sex ratio in adults, making it an ideal model to investigate when and how sex-ratio bias arises. Progress has been limited because, at present, no practicable method exists to identify worm sex at stages other than adulthood. Here, we a

We explored sex ratio at birth, defined as the proportion of male live births, in women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and eating disorders not otherwise specified-purging type (EDNOS-P) relative to a referent group in a large population-based sample of 38,340 pregnant women in Norway. Poisson regressions were adjusted for mother's age, pre-pregnancy BMI, lifetime smoking status, maternal education, income, marital status, gestational age, and parity. Lower proportions of male live births were observed in the anorexia and bulimia groups, while binge eating disor

The possibility of modifying the sex ratio of rabbit litters was examined in two experiments involving artificial insemination (AI) with fresh semen. Three time periods of AI, relative to ovulation, were used in Experiment 1: (a) control, GnRH was administered immediately after AI with ovulation estimated to occur 10-12h after AI; (b) early AI, GnRH was given 6h after AI so that ovulation was delayed until 16-18 h after AI; (c) late AI, GnRH was administered 6h before AI, which was performed 4-6h before ovulation. There were 13 does per treatment, and each doe was used in the same treatment fo

The offspring of 214 otosclerotic x normal couples were investigated, and within these sibships, the segregation of otosclerosis is compatible with autosomal dominant inheritance. However, the overall sex ratio is approximately 0.73, with otosclerosis being approximately 1.8 times more frequent in female offspring. These observations are interpreted as the consequence of selection against males carrying the otosclerosis gene. Elimination of such males occurs only in certain sibships. The remaining families demonstrate a sex ratio approximating unity with similar rates of otosclerosis in both s

The problem of the functioning specificity of sex chromosomes during the early stages of embryogenesis in man and the associated problem of the sex ratio in spontaneous and induced abortions, as well as in newborns, remains open. We have conducted a cytogenetic examination of 342 spontaneous abortions divided into three clinical groups on the basis of the severity of the developmental disturbances of the embryo: spontaneous abortions sensu stricto with a developed embryo without any significant intrauterine delay of development (n = 100), nondeveloping pregnancies (n = 176), and anembryonic fe

Transsexualism has been described in numerous papers as a condition appearing, on the average, four times as often with somatic males than with somatic females. Against this background we consider the situation in Poland, where, during three consecutive observation cycles over 6 years, the results obtained were reversed. Among our transsexuals the ratio was 5.5:1, with the majority being somatic females.

BACKGROUND: Skewed male:female ratios at birth have been observed among certain immigrant groups. Data on abortion practices that might help to explain these findings are lacking.
METHODS: We examined 1 220 933 births to women with up to 3 consecutive singleton live births between 1993 and 2012 in Ontario. Records of live births, and induced and spontaneous abortions were linked to Canadian immigration records. We determined associations of male:female infant ratios with maternal birthplace, sex of the previous living sibling(s) and prior spontaneous or induced abortions.
RESULTS: Male:femal

The objective of this study was to investigate whether the occurrence of cryptorchidism in a litter is associated with the sex ratio in this litter. The analysis included for dog 1,339 litters of 4 different breeds, of which 12.8% had 1 and 3.1% had 2 cryptorchids, and for pig 119,920 litters of 14 different populations, of which 2.2% had 1 and 0.2% had 2 cryptorchids. The data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS. In dog, the presence of cryptorchids in a litter does not affect litter size or the stillborn rate. In pig, litter size increases significantly with an increasing number

For a number of years, the time of insemination or mating during estrus has been believed to influence the sex ratio of offspring, with early insemination resulting in more females and late insemination, more males. Possible mechanisms of altering the sex ratio include facilitating or inhibiting the transport of either X- or Y-chromosome-bearing sperm through the reproductive tract, preferential selection of sperm at fertilization, or sex-specific death of embryos after fertilization. In livestock species, there is evidence for preferential selection of X- or Y-bearing sperm, based on the matu

The sex ratios of offspring associated with various types of placental pathology were studied in order to investigate whether this may throw light on the causes of the pathology. The literature was searched for data on the sex ratios of offspring associated with: abruptio placenta, placenta praevia, placenta accreta, extrauterine pregnancy, acute fatty liver of pregnancy or toxaemia of pregnancy. Highly significant male excesses associated with abruption placenta, placenta praevia, fatty liver of pregnancy and toxaemia were noted. Highly significant female excesses were found to be associated

The timing of insemination relative to ovulation and the frequency of insemination appear prominently in analyses of variations in human secondary sex ratios. Explanations invoking these variables are shown to be inadequate. A new synthetic model of sex determination is proposed in which the sex of offspring is powerfully determined by the state of the cervical mucus. The cervical state is then shown to be a function of hormonal factors endogenous to the female in interaction with the effects of previous inseminations.

It has been conjectured that mothers who give birth to neurodevelopmentally disordered (ND) children may have hormonal or immunological characteristics that bias them toward giving birth to male children. We examined this hypothesis in an epidemiological sample of 2,080 ND children drawn for the National Collaborative Perinatal Project (NCPP) who had one of nine kinds of NDs. No assumptions were made regarding the sex ratio of non-ND children since this could be computed from NCPP data for 11,213 families. The sex ratio of families with ND children was not significantly biased toward boys as c

The relationship between human sex ratios at birth and caloric availability per capita was examined across different countries. Significant positive correlations were obtained between the amount of food a country had available and the percentage of male births. Furthermore, increases or decreases in a country's caloric availability were related to corresponding changes in that country's sex ratio. These results provide evidence of adaptive sex ratio biasing in humans. The physiological mechanism by which this effect operates is probably higher mortality rates for male embryos and fetuses as a

Sex ratios of adult schistosomes in mice are almost invariably different from 1.0 and are biased towards males. The bias applies to wild rats infected with Schistosoma japonicum and trapped in an endemic area of the Philippines (male:female ratio = 1.7). It also applies to cercariae of snails collected in such areas and assessed by infection of laboratory mice using cercariae from individual snails (male:female ratio may approach 6.0). Experiments were designed to determine if duration of infection in the mammalian host was a factor that influenced the sex ratio of miracidia used for infecting
