Comparing mating systems and the strength of sexual selection across three congeneric species of pipefish spanning the continuum of sexual dimorphism.

The strength of sexual selection is often linked to genetic mating system and is thought to be a driving force in the evolution of sexual dimorphism. Here, we compared selection between males and females across three closely related species: the dusky (Syngnathus floridae), Northern (S. fuscus), and Gulf (S. scovelli) pipefishes, using new and previously published datasets. These three species exhibit male pregnancy but vary in mating systems and sexual dimorphism, enabling us to test if (i) the species differ in their opportunities for pre- and post-copulatory selection, (ii) females demonstr

Sexual Selection Does Not Increase the Rate of Compensatory Adaptation to a Mutation Influencing a Secondary Sexual Trait in Drosophila melanogaster.

Theoretical work predicts that sexual selection can enhance natural selection, increasing the rate of adaptation to new environments and helping purge harmful mutations. While some experiments support these predictions, remarkably little work has addressed the role of sexual selection on compensatory adaptation-populations' ability to compensate for the costs of deleterious alleles that are already present. We tested whether sexual selection, as well as the degree of standing genetic variation, affect the rate of compensatory evolution via phenotypic suppression in experimental populations of

Testing the Role of Natural and Sexual Selection on Testes Size Asymmetry in Anurans.

Directional asymmetry in testes size is commonly documented in vertebrates. The degree of testes size asymmetry has been confirmed to be associated with natural and sexual selection. However, the role of natural and sexual selection driving variations in testes size asymmetry among species of anurans are largely unknown. Here, we studied the patterns of variations in testes size asymmetry and the factors shaping its variations among 116 anuran species. The results indicated that the left size-biased testes in 110 species (94.83% of 116 species) is more common than the right size-biased testes

The effect of sexual selection on phenotypic diversification among human populations: A simulation study.

Despite the generally low level of inter-population genetic differentiation in humans as compared with great apes, it has long been acknowledged that there is a considerable amount of geographic variations in human phenotypes, for example, skin pigmentation, cranial morphology, and soft-tissue facial morphology, to name but a few. Indeed, recent studies have suggested that the extent of inter-population diversity in some human phenotypes is greater than expected from random drift alone. Such an excess of phenotypic diversity is often attributed to adaptation to local environment. However, this

The impact of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse on contraceptive method selection and discontinuation.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the impact of exposure to emotional, physical, or sexual abuse on contraceptive method selection and discontinuation. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of 7170 women enrolled in the Contraceptive CHOICE Project in St. Louis, Missouri, a prospective cohort study in which 9256 women were provided their preferred method of contraception at no cost from 2007 to 2011. We defined contraceptive discontinuation as device removal or nonuse for at least 4 weeks within the first 12 months after initiation. RESULTS: One third of women experienced some abuse in their lif

Genetic biases for showy males: are some genetic systems especially conducive to sexual selection?

Male secondary sexual characters (conspicuous ornaments, signals, colors) are among nature's most striking features. Yet, it is unclear why certain groups of organisms are more likely than others to evolve these traits. One explanation for such taxonomic biases is that some genetic systems may be especially conducive to sexual selection. Here, we present theory and simulation results demonstrating that rare alleles encoding either male ornaments or female preferences for those ornaments are better protected against random loss in species with ZZZW or ZZZO sex chromosome systems (male homogamet

Mechanisms of rapid sympatric speciation by sex reversal and sexual selection in cichlid fish.

Mechanisms of speciation in cichlid fish were investigated by analyzing population genetic models of sexual selection on sex-determining genes associated with color polymorphisms. The models are based on a combination of laboratory experiments and field observations on the ecology, male and female mating behavior, and inheritance of sex-determination and color polymorphisms. The models explain why sex-reversal genes that change males into females tend to be X-linked and associated with novel colors, using the hypothesis of restricted recombination on the sex chromosomes, as suggested by previo

Sexual selection purges mutation load, but not overall genetic diversity, decreasing vulnerability to extinction.

Theory suggests sexual selection will enhance population viability by purging deleterious alleles. However, direct genomic evidence for this fundamental idea is scarce and contradictory. We combined long-term experimental evolution with whole-genome resequencing to directly test how sexual selection affects mutation load, genomic divergence, and extinction risk in small populations (maximum Ne = 40) of Tribolium castaneum. After 156 generations, populations evolving under strong sexual selection carried substantially fewer deleterious alleles than populations under weak sexual selection, based

Sexual Activity and Weekly Contraceptive Discontinuation and Selection Among Young Adult Women in Michigan.

Understanding young women's contraceptive and pregnancy prevention behaviors is important for helping women and their partners control if and when they have children. Prior research on associations between patterns of sexual activity and contraceptive behaviors is limited. We assessed the influence of recent sexual activity on discontinuation and selection of specific contraceptive methods. We used weekly data from the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life (RDSL) study, a longitudinal 2.5-year population-based project that sampled woman ages 18 and 19 (N = 1,003) in one Michigan county. We est

[Epidemiological developments of selected sexually transmitted infections in Germany].

The number of people living with HIV infection has been increasing since the mid 1990s and is expected to rise further in the coming years. The HIV epidemic in Germany is still most affected by developments in the group of men who have sex with men (MSM). In this group, the number of newly diagnosed HIV infections has increased in recent years especially in large cities. Despite increased efforts to motivate HIV-infected people, who were not previously diagnosed, to be tested as early as possible and to seek medical treatment, the number of undiagnosed HIV-infected persons has increased. There

Sex in Australia: selected characteristics of regular sexual relationships.

OBJECTIVE: To describe selected characteristics of Australian adults' regular or ongoing sexual relationships. METHOD: Computer-assisted telephone interviews were completed by a representative sample of 10,173 men and 9,134 women aged 16-59 years. The overall response rate was 73.1% (69.4% men, 77.6% women). Respondents indicated how often they had sex in the past four weeks, contraceptive use, their own and their partners' expectations about having sex with other people during their relationship, whether they had discussed these expectations with their partners and whether they had an explic

Efficacy of selected diagnostic tests for sexually transmitted diseases.

Direct urethral and cervical smears for gonorrhea in women are useful because of their high specificity. Male rectal smears are less efficacious. Direct tests for candidiasis and trichomoniasis are also specific, but less sensitive than generally thought. Most tests exhibit only moderate month-to-month variability. No association between infection with trichomonads and gonococci was demonstrated. The gonococcal tests all perform best under conditions of high prevalence, such as those that obtain in venereal disease clinics in the United States.

Impact of rape on female sexuality: review of selected literature.

This article reviews the medical and psychologic literature on the impact of rape on female sexuality. Studies documented moderately high rates of genital injuries and moderate rates of sexually transmitted infections postrape and significantly greater difficulties with aspects of reproductive/sexual functioning, including dyspareunia, endometriosis, menstrual irregularities, and chronic pelvic pain for raped compared with nonraped women. Raped women also engaged in significantly more high-risk sexual behaviors. Posttraumatic stress disorder emerged as an important mediator of sexual victimiza

Schizophrenia as one extreme of a sexually selected fitness indicator.

Schizophrenia remains an evolutionary paradox. Its delusions, hallucinations and other symptoms begin in adolescence or early adulthood and so devastate sexual relationships and reproductive success that selection should have eliminated the disorder long ago. Yet it persists as a moderately heritable disorder at a global 1% prevalence--too high for new mutations at a few genetic loci. We suggest that schizophrenia persists and involves many loci because it is the unattractive, low-fitness extreme of a highly variable mental trait that evolved as a fitness ("good genes") indicator through mutua

Sexual selection and 'species recognition' revisited: serial processing and order-of-operations in mate choice.

Following the modern synthesis, mating signals were thought of principally as species recognition traits, a view later challenged by a burgeoning interest in sexual selection-specifically mate choice. In the 1990s, these different signal functions were proposed to represent a single process driven by the shape of female preference functions across both intra- and interspecific signal space. However, the properties of reliable 'recognition' signals (stereotyped; low intraspecific variation) and informative 'quality' signals (condition dependent; high intraspecific variation) seem at odds, perha

Oral processing, sexual selection, and size variation in the circumorbital region of Colobus and Piliocolobus.

OBJECTIVES: The function of the browridge in primates is a subject of enduring debate. Early studies argued for a role in resisting masticatory stresses, but recent studies have suggested sexual signaling as a biological role. We tested associations between circumorbital form, diet, oral processing, and social behavior in two species of colobus monkey-the king colobus (Colobus polykomos) and western red or bay colobus (Piliocolobus badius). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We quantified circumorbital size and dimorphism in a sample of 98 crania. Controlling for age and facial size, we tested whether va

Was facial width-to-height ratio subject to sexual selection pressures? A life course approach.

Sexual selection researchers have traditionally focused on adult sex differences; however, the schedule and pattern of sex-specific ontogeny can provide insights unobtainable from an exclusive focus on adults. Recently, it has been debated whether facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR; bi-zygomatic breadth divided by midface height) is a human secondary sexual characteristic (SSC). Here, we review current evidence, then address this debate using ontogenetic evidence, which has been under-explored in fWHR research. Facial measurements were collected from 3D surface images of males and females aged

Whole-genome resequencing uncovers molecular signatures of natural and sexual selection in wild bighorn sheep.

The identification of genes influencing fitness is central to our understanding of the genetic basis of adaptation and how it shapes phenotypic variation in wild populations. Here, we used whole-genome resequencing of wild Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) to >50-fold coverage to identify 2.8 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and genomic regions bearing signatures of directional selection (i.e. selective sweeps). A comparison of SNP diversity between the X chromosome and the autosomes indicated that bighorn males had a dramatically reduced long-term effective populati

Sexual selection and sex differences in the prevalence of childhood externalizing and adolescent internalizing disorders.

Despite the well-established sex difference in prevalence of many childhood and adolescent psychopathological conditions, no integrative metatheory of sex differences in psychopathology exists. This review attempts to provide a metatheoretical framework to guide empirical examination of sex differences in prevalence of childhood-onset "externalizing" and adolescent-onset "internalizing" disorders, based on sexual selection evolutionary theory. Sexual selection theory suggests important between-sex differences in markers, mechanisms, etiology, and developmental timing of risk and resilience rel
