Recentering environmental context in the conceptualization of borderline personality disorder among sexual and gender minority individuals.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) prevalence is higher among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals compared with cisgender heterosexuals; SGM individuals are additionally diagnosed with BPD more frequently in clinical settings. There appears to be a small effect of clinician bias-particularly for gender minority individuals. However, it does not fully explain this observed psychiatric disparity. In the current article, we review the historical origins of the BPD diagnosis as well as the present-day conceptualization of the disorder. The theory, research, and treatment of BPD overwhe

Measurement invariance of obsessive-compulsive disorder self-report measures in sexual and gender minority individuals.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals comprise up to one fifth of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) clinical samples and appear to be at greater risk for OCD than their cisgender, heterosexual peers. Recent research has examined the psychometric properties of several commonly used OCD self-report measures within an SGM sample and found them adequate to strong in terms of factor structure and loadings, internal consistency, and convergent validity. However, measurement invariance testing is needed to ensure that these measures perform similarly across individuals of diverse sexual orie

Microcosting the optimization of PrEP implementation among sexual and gender minority individuals with a substance use disorder.

AIM: Substance Use Disorder (SUD) increases HIV risk and is often a barrier to advancement along the PrEP Care Continuum. In the United States ~ 40,000 new HIV diagnoses occur annually, the majority among sexual and gender minorities who use substances. Insufficiently treated HIV and SUD results in substantial costs to society. Effective strategies that focus on SUD as part of a client-centered approach to improve PrEP engagement and address social determinants of health (SDoH), are critical. Understanding resources/cost requirements is important to know for prospective sites. METHODS: The pa

Sexual Functioning and Eating Disorder Symptoms: Examining the Role of Gender and Internalizing Symptoms in an Undergraduate Population.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) are frequently associated with sexual dysfunction; however, research has not tested this relationship while adjusting for the known effects of anxiety and depression on sexual functioning. Furthermore, there is a notable lack of research on sexual functioning problems and ED symptoms among men. METHOD: Undergraduate cisgender women (n = 1488) and men (n = 646) completed measures of ED psychopathology and sexual functioning problems. Hierarchical linear regressions predicting sexual functioning problems were conducted separately by gender including BMI, age, s

Sexual orientation and prevalence of disordered eating among young adults: Intersections with race, ethnicity, and gender.

OBJECTIVE: Disordered eating is a public health concern linked with many adverse outcomes. Research has identified disparities in disordered eating prevalence across multiple social positions, but less work has examined sexual orientation as a primary consideration alongside other marginalized positions. This study examines prevalence of disordered eating behaviors across sexual orientation in combination with race/ethnicity and gender among young adults. METHODS: Participants included 960 young adults involved in Project EAT 2023. The adjusted probabilities of disordered eating outcomes (die

Gender as a moderator of associations between military sexual trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder treatment utilization.

The present study sought to investigate whether gender moderates the relationship between military sexual trauma (MST) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment utilization, among veterans with clinically significant PTSD symptoms. Participants were 2,664 veterans with probable PTSD from a nationwide, population-based survey. Participants reported sociodemographic information, history of MST (including military sexual harassment and military sexual assault), and lifetime receipt of PTSD psychotherapy and medication treatment. We found that gender significantly moderated relationships

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents' disordered eating: Exploring general and SGM-specific factors.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents disproportionately report disordered eating, yet have primarily been considered under a larger SGM umbrella. The current study 1) compared disordered eating between sexual minority (SM) and gender minority (GM) adolescents; 2) examined how general psychological factors (self-esteem, depression, and stress) and SGM-specific factors (e.g., feelings about SGM identity, access to SGM resources) were associated with disordered eating; and 3) examined whether associations between these factors differed for SM versus GM adolescents. METHOD: SGM

Socioeconomic status and eating disorder prevalence: at the intersections of gender identity, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Longstanding biases have fostered the erroneous notion that only those of higher socioeconomic status (SES) experience eating disorders (EDs); however, EDs present across all SES strata. Considering the dearth of ED research among those of lower SES, this study examined (1) the overall association between SES and ED prevalence, and (2) ED prevalence in the context of four relevant social identities (i.e. SES, gender identity, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity) from an intersectional perspective, as unique combinations of multiple social identities may differentially influence

Adolescent Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, and Cannabis Use: Potential Mediations by Internalizing Disorder Risk.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Adolescents who identify as nonbinary gender or as not heterosexual report higher levels of mental illness than their counterparts. Cannabis use is a commonly employed strategy to cope with mental illness symptoms among adolescents; however, cannabis use can have many deleterious health consequences for youth. Within the frame of minority stress theory, this study investigates the relationships between gender identity and sexual orientation, internalizing disorder symptoms, and cannabis use among adolescents. METHOD: A national cross-sectional survey of a generalizable sample

Gender by Dasein? A Heideggerian critique of Suzanne Kessler and the medical management of infants born with disorders of sexual development.

This article explores the relationship between gender, technology, language, and how infants and children born with disorders of sexual development are shaped into intelligible members of the community. The contemporary medical model maintains that children ought to be both socially and surgically assigned and reared as one particular gender. Gender scholar Suzanne Kessler rejects this position and argues for the acceptance of greater genital variability through the use of language. Using a Heideggerian lens, the main question I seek to answer in this article is: does Kessler's approach succee

Call to Action: Recommendations for Justice-Based Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder With Sexual Orientation and Gender Themes.

Gender and sexual minorities are subjected to minority stress in the form of discrimination and violence that leads to vigilance; identity concealment and discomfort; and internalized homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. These experiences are related to increased susceptibility to mental health concerns in this population. Historically, the behavioral treatment of sexual orientation (SO) and gender-themed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has inadvertently reinforced anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) stigma and contributed to minority stress in clients, t

An Examination of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-Related Symptoms Among a Sample of Latinx Sexual- and Gender-Minority Immigrants.

Latinx sexual- and gender- minority (SGM) immigrants experience stress across multiple axes of identity, which can lead to negative health consequences. Using an intersectional-cultural theory of stress, the current study sampled 194 Latinx SGM immigrants to examine the association between intersectional discrimination (i.e., race- and sexual orientation-based), acculturative stress, symptoms related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and somatic distress. We used moderated hierarchical linear regression analysis to determine whether social support moderated the associations among inters

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in three understudied populations: A review of Latino, Black, and Sexual & Gender Minority Individuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review overviews the research base for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) among three historically understudied populations; Latino/Latin Americans, Black/African Americans, and Sexual and Gender Minority individuals. RECENT FINDINGS: Findings suggest that while core OCD symptoms are broadly similar across groups, sociocultural factors such as discrimination, minority stress, stigma, family context, spirituality, and access to care significantly influence symptom presentation, severity, and treatment utilization. Recent studies have evaluated assessment tools and prov

The role of gender and child sexual abuse history in treatment response in two treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested whether a reported history of child sexual abuse (CSA) differentially affected treatment outcomes in men and women receiving written exposure therapy (WET) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: Participants were treatment-seeking men (n = 66) and women (n = 60) with a primary diagnosis of PTSD randomized to either WET or CPT. Approximately half of the sample (n = 60) reported a history of CSA. Masked evaluators assessed participants' PTSD symptoms and remission status at baseline and 6, 12, and 24 weeks after the

Sexual orientation versus age of onset as bases for typologies (subtypes) for gender identity disorder in adolescents and adults.

The most widely used and influential typologies for transsexualism and gender identity disorder (GID) in adolescents and adults employ either sexual orientation or age of onset of GID-related symptoms as bases for categorization. This review compares these two typological approaches, with the goal of determining which one should be employed for the diagnosis of GID in Adolescents or Adults (or its successor diagnosis) in the forthcoming revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Typologies based on sexual orientation and age of onset of GID-related symptoms ar

'Bodies that never grow': How psychiatric understanding of autism spectrum disorders affects autistic people's bodily experience of gender, ageing, and sexual desire.

This paper investigates the intersections of gender, sexuality, ageing in the way autism spectrum disorder is medically described as a discrete category. On one hand, the construction of autism as a male-centric phenomenon results in a significant gender gap in autism diagnosis, with girls diagnosed with autism significantly less and later than boys. On the other hand, the focus on depicting autism as a pediatric condition exposes adult autistics to discriminatory practices such as infantilization and contributes to the disregard of their sexual desires or to the misconception of their sexual
