Oral manifestations of sexually transmitted diseases.

Sexually transmitted diseases frequently affect the mucous membranes producing characteristic and potentially diagnostic lesions on the oral mucosa. This article reviews the classic route of transmission and the corresponding clinical presentation of several of the sexually transmitted viruses, including herpes virus types I and II, Epstein Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, human papilloma virus, molluscum contagiosum, as well as the human immunodeficiency virus. Bacterial infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea, as well as the fungus candida are reviewed under the umbrella of STDs with potential or

Sexually transmitted diseases treatment guidelines.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major health problem for adolescents. Health care providers for adolescents play a critical role in preventing and treating STDs. In May 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines 2002. These evidence-based guidelines are based on a systematic literature review focusing on information that had become available since the 1998 Guidelines for Treatment of STDs. This article reviews the new STD treatment guidelines for gonorrhea, chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas, vulvova

Syndromic approach to a case of balanoposthitis.

The newly introduced simplified syndromic approach for the mamagement of sexually transmitted diseases was used in a case of balanoposthitis. Gram staining from the glans penis confirmed the case as bacterial balanoposthitis. Topical zinc-sulphadiazine cream was found to be very effective in curing bacterial balanoposthitis within seven days.

Epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases: the global picture.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are now the commonest group of notifiable infectious diseases in most countries, particularly in the age group of 15 to 50 years and in infants. Their control is important considering the high incidence of acute infections, complications and sequelae, their socioeconomic impact, and their role in increasing transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The worldwide incidence of major bacterial and viral STD is estimated at over 125 million cases yearly. STD are hyperendemic in many developing countries. In industrialized countries, the bacterial S

Hormonal contraception and risk of sexually transmitted disease acquisition: results from a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between use of oral contraceptive pills or depot medroxyprogesterone acetate and sexually transmitted disease acquisition. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort included 948 Kenyan prostitutes. Multivariate Andersen-Gill proportional hazards models were constructed, adjusting for sexual behavioral and demographic variables. RESULTS: When compared with women who were using no contraception, users of oral contraceptive pills were at increased risk for acquisition of chlamydia (hazard ratio, 1.8; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-2.9) and vaginal candidiasis (hazar

Bacterial Vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis, the most prevalent cause of vaginal discharge in the United States, is characterized microbiologically by a shift in the vagina away from a lactobacillus-predominant flora and toward a predominantly anaerobic milieu. The cause of bacterial vaginosis is unknown, but the epidemiology of the syndrome suggests that it is sexually associated. Bacterial vaginosis has been associated with various complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, preterm birth, postoperative gynecologic infections, and abnormal Pap smears. Abnormal vaginal flora may also be a biologic risk facto

Cutaneous diphtheria masquerading as a sexually transmitted disease.

A 41 year-old, sexually promiscuous, married male, an agricultural laborer by occupation, presented to our sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic with multiple ulcers over the scrotum and genitalia of 20 days' duration. Bacterial culture from swabs taken from the genital ulcer, grew organisms morphologically and biochemically characteristic of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. He made a complete and uneventful recovery after two weeks of therapy with antidiphtheria serum and crystalline penicillin. This case brings into light this hitherto unreported presentation of wound diphtheria mimicking a

A follow-up study of methods of contraception, sexual activity, and rates of trichomoniasis, candidiasis, and bacterial vaginosis.

A randomized, clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the spermicidal agent nonoxynol 9 as prophylaxis for sexually transmitted diseases. Eight hundred eighteen women using birth control who attended a sexually transmitted disease clinic were evaluated monthly for trichomoniasis, candidiasis, and bacterial vaginosis for 6 months. Women using the active spermicide experienced a somewhat lower incidence rate of trichomoniasis (relative rate 0.83; 95% confidence interval 0.61 to 1.12) and bacterial vaginosis (relative rate 0.86; 95% confidence interval 0.69 to 1.12) as compared with placebo user

Newer and emerging sexually transmitted infections: A narrative review.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including traditionally curable diseases like syphilis and gonorrhoea, have seen a recent resurgence. Concurrently, newer atypical infections presenting as STIs have emerged, driven by changes in pathogen virulence, host behaviours, and environmental factors. The spectrum of STIs is expanding due to evolving behaviours, globalisation, and pathogen adaptability. This review aims to highlight key viral, bacterial, fungal, and enteric infections that are newly identified or increasingly transmitted through sexual contact, introducing the concept of sexually

Bacterial Lesions of the Oral Mucosa.

Nonodontogenic bacterial infections of the oral cavity are not a common finding in the United States. Nevertheless, there has been an increase in prevalence of certain bacterial sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis and gonorrhea, and conditions such as tuberculosis still pose a serious threat to certain segments of the population. Finally, given the uncommon nature and pathophysiology of these diseases, diagnosis is often delayed, resulting in more clinically significant disease and potential contamination of individuals. Thus, it is prudent that clinicians be familiar with these un
