Regeneration of iron for trichloroethylene reduction by Shewanella alga BrY.

Zero valent iron (ZVI), the primary reactive material in several permeable reactive barriers, is often oxidized to ferrous or ferric iron, resulting in decreased reactivity with time. Iron reducing bacteria can reconvert the ferric iron to its ferrous form, prolonging the reduction of chlorinated organic contaminants. In this study, the reduction of Fe(II,III) oxide and Fe(III) oxide by a strain of iron reducing bacteria of the group Shewanella alga BrY(S. alga BrY) was observed in both aqueous and solid phases. S. alga BrY preferentially reduced dissolved ferric iron over the solid ferric iro

Necrotizing fasciitis caused by Shewanella putrefaciens in a uremic patient.

Shewanella putrefaciens rarely causes infections in humans. This report describes a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by S. putrefaciens in a uremic patient who recovered in spite of inadequate antibiotic treatment. S. putrefaciens is a possible causative organism of necrotizing fasciitis, and the absence of any sign of systemic infection cannot rule out the possibility of invasive infection in uremic patients. Surgical intervention is important in such cases.

Elucidating the physiological significance of iodate reduction in Shewanella species.

The reduction of iodate by Shewanella species plays a crucial role in iodine biogeochemical cycling. However, the physiological significance of this reduction process remains poorly understood, because Shewanella species are capable of reducing only low concentrations of iodate. This study systematically examined the physiological and transcriptomic responses of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to iodate exposure. Our results showed that phenol-mediated elimination of hypoiodous acid did not increase the upper limit of iodate reduction achieved by S. oneidensis MR-1, and dimethyl sulfoxide was prefe

SXP01: a novel bacteriophage for combating Shewanella xiamenensis in aquaculture.

INTRODUCTION: The emergence of multi-drug resistant Shewanella xiamenensis poses a significant threat to aquaculture and public health, driving the need for alternative therapies like bacteriophages. METHODS: A novel bacteriophage, SXP01, was isolated using S. xiamenensis A001 as a host. Its kinetic parameters (MOI, latent period) and stability across temperature (4-60°C), pH (6-11), and chloroform were characterized. The lysis cassette was identified genomically, and a recombinant endolysin (LysSXP-1) was expressed to test lytic activity. In vivo efficacy was evaluated in a crucian carp infe

Analysis of clinical characteristics of infections caused by Shewanella species.

PURPOSE: The Shewanella genus is a rare pathogen of marine origin. In recent years, there has been a continuous increase in infection cases caused by this bacterium, and we have observed the uniqueness of infections caused by this microorganism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study conducted a retrospective analysis of the medical history and laboratory examination data of patients infected with the Shewanella genus over the past decade. Additionally, it employed bioinformatics methods to analyze the relevant virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes associated with the Shewanella genus.

[Research on the bioaccesibility of HgS by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1].

The biological dissolution and methylation of solid HgS by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and influenced factors under laboratory conditions were studied. Results showed that S. oneidensis MR-1 could grow well at the low concentration of Na2S, but its growth was inhibited at the high concentration of Na2S, which mainly happened in the prolonged lag phase. Iron reducing bacteria S. oneidensis MR-1 could access the solid mercuric sulfide, and rapidly promote the biological dissolution and methylation of HgS. In the appropriate range of sulfide to S. oneidensis MR-1, the biological solubility of HgS

[Infectious cellulitis and Shewanella alga septicemia in an immunocompetent patient].

BACKGROUND: Shewanella alga is a Gram-negative bacilla often found in water or soil. Clinical infections in humans are rare, with serious infections described generally in immunocompromised hosts. CASE REPORT: A 66 year-old man with a heel wound had developed, after numerous sea baths in the Atlantic ocean (Oleron island, France), an infectious cellulitis of the leg with Shewanella alga septicemia. Despite the absence of immunodeficiency in this patient, infectious cellulitis and septicemia occurred via a wound to the skin and contact with sea water. Healing was seen after treatment with cefo

Periplasmic Protein Mobility for Extracellular Electron Transport in Shewanella oneidensis.

Extracellular electron transport (EET) supports the survival of specific microorganisms on the Earth's surface by facilitating microbial respiration with diverse electron acceptors. A key aspect of EET is the organization of electron relays, i.e., multi-heme c-type cytochromes (MHCs), within the periplasmic space of microbial cells. In this study, we investigated the mobility of periplasmic electron relays in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a model strain capable of EET, using in vivo protein crosslinking to the MHCs. First, we established that crosslinking efficiency correlates with the spatial p

Severe Shewanella Cellulitis Following Saltwater Exposure in an Elderly Patient.

Shewanella algae is an opportunistic Gram-negative bacillus primarily found in marine environments. It can cause a range of infections in humans, from superficial soft tissue infections to more severe conditions like bacteremia, otitis, and hepatobiliary infections. While infections are rare, they can be significant, leading to complications such as sepsis and tissue necrosis. We present the case of severe cellulitis caused by Shewanella in an 88-year-old patient with multiple comorbidities. Following a blue crab pinch and consequent saltwater exposure, the patient developed severe cellulitis,

Survival of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 after UV radiation exposure.

We systematically investigated the physiological response as well as DNA damage repair and damage tolerance in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 following UVC, UVB, UVA, and solar light exposure. MR-1 showed the highest UVC sensitivity among Shewanella strains examined, with D37 and D10 values of 5.6 and 16.5% of Escherichia coli K-12 values. Stationary cells did not show an increased UVA resistance compared to exponential-phase cells; instead, they were more sensitive at high UVA dose. UVA-irradiated MR-1 survived better on tryptic soy agar than Luria-Bertani plates regardless of the growth stage. A

Shewanella alga bacteremia in two patients with lower leg ulcers.

The first Danish cases of Shewanella alga bacteremia in two patients with chronic lower leg ulcers are reported. Both patients were admitted to the hospital during the same month of a very warm summer and had been exposed to the same marine environment, thereby suggesting the same source of infection. Both patients survived; however, one of them had extensive myonecrosis, while the other patient had an uncomplicated course. The strains were initially believed to be Shewanella putrefaciens on the basis of key characteristics and results of the API 20NE identification system (bioMérieux, Marcy l
