[Shigella boydii strains possessing a new serovar (SM00-27) isolated from diarrhea of overseas travelers in Japan].

Five Shigella strains isolated from stool cultures of five sporadic imported diarrheal cases in Japan during 1999-2001, did not react to any antisera of the established Shigella serovars. These strains had the typical biochemical characteristics of Shigella boydii, and were biochemically identical. All strains were positive in a PCR assay and a cultured-cell invasion test for invasiveness; these indicate that they can cause shigellosis in humans. The results of antigenic analysis revealed that they did not belong to any of the recognized or provisional serovars, and were serologically indistin

Development of a cost-effective vaccine candidate with outer membrane vesicles of a tolA-disrupted Shigella boydii strain.

Our previous studies on outer membrane vesicles based vaccine development against shigellosis, revealed the inability of Shigella to release significant amount of vesicles naturally, during growth. Disruption of tolA, one of the genes of the Tol-Pal system of Gram negative bacterial membrane, has increased the vesicle release rate of a Shigella boydii type 4 strain to approximately 60% higher. We also noticed the vesicles, released from tolA-disrupted strain captured more OmpA protein and lipopolysaccharide, compared to the vesicles released from its wild type prototype. Six to seven weeks old

Plasmid profiles of drug resistant Shigella boydii types 1-5, 8, 10, 12-14 from Ethiopia (1974-85).

Plasmid profile analysis by agarose gel electrophoresis was performed on 42 drug resistant strains of Shigella boydii serotypes 1-5, 8, 10, 12-14, collected between 1974 and 1985 from endemic cases of shigellosis in Ethiopia, and their Escherichia coli K12 transconjugants. Resistance factors (R factors) were further characterized by incompatibility testing. Patterns of small plasmids, less than 15 kb, were similar within each of the individual S. boydii serotypes. Plasmids of about 3.3-3.7 kb were found in all strains of serotypes 2 and 4. Plasmids of about 4.3-4.6 kb were found in about 86% o

Drug resistance in Shigella dysenteriae, S flexneri and S boydii in England and Wales: increasing incidence of resistance to trimethoprim.

A total of 2753 strains of shigella belonging to subgroups A, B, and C that were isolated from patients in England and Wales during the period from 1979 to mid-1983 were studied. Of these, 1690 (61%) were from patients recently returned from abroad or in contact with recent travellers, and 760 (45%) of these affected travellers from the Indian subcontinent. The number of strains resistant to sulphonamides and streptomycin remained at a high level throughout (average 76% and 72% respectively). Resistance to tetracyclines, ampicillin, and chloramphenicol rose, reaching 63%, 51%, and 48%, respect

Immunoinformatics-based design of a next generation multi-epitope vaccine candidate against Shigella boydii using a hierarchical subtractive proteomics approach.

Shigella boydii (strain CDC 3083-94 / BS512) is a Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacterium that plays a significant role as a pathogen causing bacillary dysentery, especially in developing areas where hygiene is poor. Although less frequently reported compared to other Shigella species, S. boydii still contributes substantially to global shigellosis cases, particularly in low-income endemic regions. Despite its clinical relevance, there has been limited research dedicated on identifying strain-specific antigenic targets for vaccine development. The current study utilized the subtractive p

Imported shigellosis: aerogenic Shigella boydii 74 (Sachs A 12) in a traveller followed by two cases of laboratory-associated infections.

During their holiday in Tunesia two members of a family developed severe dysentery which prompted hospitalization of one of them after their return to Germany. Shigella boydii 4 was isolated from a stool culture. From another, healthy family member an aerogenic, mannitol negative strain of S. boydii 14 (formerly Sachs A 12) was isolated which subsequently infected a laboratory technician when she was handling the fecal specimen. A second laboratory infection due to this organism occurred while performing the Serény test of pathogenicity. Both persons developed a severe dysenteric syndrome. The

Characterization of endemic Shigella boydii strains isolated in Iran by serotyping, antimicrobial resistance, plasmid profile, ribotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis.

BACKGROUND: Shigellosis is one of the major causes of morbidity in children with diarrhea in Iran. The present study was undertaken to characterize apparently sporadic Shigella boydii strains isolated from pediatric patients in Iran. FINDINGS: Ten S. boydii strains isolated from pediatric cases of gastroenteritis and acute diarrhea in Tehran between December 2002 and November 2003 were submitted to serotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, plasmid profile analysis, ribotyping and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Seven isolates were attributed to serotype 2, whereas the remaini

Virulence and Antibiotic Resistance of aEPEC/STEC Escherichia coli Pathotypes with Serotype Links to Shigella boydii 16 Isolated from Irrigation Water.

Irrigation water can serve as a reservoir and transmission route for pathogenic Escherichia coli, posing a threat to food safety and public health. This study builds upon a previous survey conducted in Hermosillo, Sonora (Mexico), where 445 samples were collected from a local Honeydew melon farm and associated packing facilities. Among the 32 E. coli strains recovered, two strains, A34 and A51, were isolated from irrigation water and selected for further molecular characterization by PCR, due to their high pathogenic potential. Both strains were identified as hybrid aEPEC/STEC pathotypes carry

Comparative analysis of Shigella boydii 18 foodborne outbreak isolate and related enteric bacteria: role of rpoS and adiA in acid stress response.

Shigella boydii CDPH (Chicago Department of Public Health) serotype 18 was implicated in an outbreak of foodborne illness in 1998. The suspected food vehicles were parsley and cilantro imported from Mexico used to prepare bean salad. Previous studies revealed that S. boydii CDPH serotype 18 can survive in bean salad, which contains organic acids and whose pH decreases over time. Acid challenge assays in acidified tryptic soy broth at pH 4.5, acidified Luria-Bertani broth at pH 4.5, and acidified M9 minimal salts medium at pH 2.5 containing amino acids, arginine, or glutamic acid were performed

An outbreak of Shigella boydii serotype 20 in January 2015 amongst United Kingdom healthcare workers involved in the Ebola response in Sierra Leone.

In January 2015, Public Health England and the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defence investigated cases of diarrhoea and fever in military personnel recently returned to the UK after supporting the response to the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone. Tests for Ebola virus infection were negative. PCR tests detected the ipaH gene in 10/12 faecal specimens, and Shigella boydii serotype 20 was isolated from 7 patients. A case control study was undertaken and analysed using multivariable logistic regression. Consumption of a coronation chicken lunch at the transit camp in Sierra Leone (SL) 24-48 h pr

Antimicrobial resistance trends in Shigella serogroups isolated in Israel, 1990-1995.

From a total of 31319 Shigella strains isolated in Israel between 1990 and 1996, 17574 were sent to the National Shigella Reference Center for typing. Of these, 15287 were identified as Shigella sonnei, 1833 as Shigella flexneri, 327 as Shigella boydii and 127 as Shigella dysenteriae. In all, 4395 strains were tested for sensitivity to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid and ofloxacin. All strains tested were sensitive to ofloxacin, and only three strains were resistant to nalidixic acid. Only 113 of 3240 (3.5%) Shigella sonnei strains, 172

Multiple independent origins of Shigella clones of Escherichia coli and convergent evolution of many of their characteristics.

The evolutionary relationships of 46 Shigella strains representing each of the serotypes belonging to the four traditional Shigella species (subgroups), Dysenteriae, Flexneri, Boydii, and Sonnei, were determined by sequencing of eight housekeeping genes in four regions of the chromosome. Analysis revealed a very similar evolutionary pattern for each region. Three clusters of strains were identified, each including strains from different subgroups. Cluster 1 contains the majority of Boydii and Dysenteriae strains (B1-4, B6, B8, B10, B14, and B18; and D3-7, D9, and D11-13) plus Flexneri 6 and 6A

Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli strains are derived from distinct ancestral strains of E. coli.

The differentiation between Shigella subspecies, and the phylogenetic position of Shigella clones within Escherichia coli clones was determined by analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphisms of rDNA (ribotyping). Seventy-five Shigella strains belonging to the four subspecies and 13 enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) strains were compared with the 72 E. coli strains of the ECOR collection, which have been classified into four phylogenetic groups (A, B1, B2 and D). Seventeen Shigella dysenteriae ribotypes, 12 Shigella flexneri ribotypes, 23 Shiegella boydii ribotypes, 12 Shigella sonnei rib

Genomic insights into Shigella species isolated from small ruminants and manure in the North West Province, South Africa.

This study investigated Shigella species' antibiotic resistance patterns and genomic characteristics from small ruminants and manure collected in Potchefstroom, North West, South Africa. Whole genome sequencing was used to determine resistome profiles of Shigella flexneri isolates from small ruminants' manure and Shigella boydii from sheep faeces. Comparative genomics was employed on the South African 261 S. flexneri strains available from GenBank, including the sequenced strains in this study, by investigating the serovars, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and plasmid replicon types. Polymicrobial and recurrent bacteremia with Shigella in a patient with AIDS.

Shigella gastroenteritis is uncommon among HIV seropositive patients and may be complicated in some patients by bacteremia; S. flexneri being the most frequently detected serogroup. While recurrent Salmonella bacteremia is common among HIV-seropositive patients, recurrent Shigella bacteremia is not. We report here an HIV-seropositive patient with Shigella gastroenteritis, polymicrobial bacteremia due to S. flexneri and S. boydii, and recurrent gastroenteritis and bacteremia with S. boydii. Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of Shigella isolates in Singapore.

Serogrouping of 506 Shigella strains isolated in Singapore from 1986 to 1990 showed that Shigella flexneri (60.3%) was the most common, followed by S. sonnei (33.6%), S. boydii (3.2%) and S. dysenteriae (3%). Of the 23 Shigella serotypes identified, the predominant ones were S. flexneri types 2a and 1b, S. boydii types 1 and 5, and S. dysenteriae types 1 and 3. More than 80% of the Shigella species were resistant to at least one antimicrobial drug, and the incidence of multiresistance was particularly high in S. flexneri strains. Due to the high incidence of antimicrobial resistance, the susce
