Autologous blood and corticosteroid injection and extracoporeal shock wave therapy in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis.

Lateral epicondylitis is a common disorder characterized by pain and tenderness over the lateral epicondyle. It occurs most frequently as a result of minor, unrecognized trauma during sports activities and occupation-related physical activities. The goal of this study was to evaluate the short-, medium-, and long-term effects of corticosteroid injection, autologous blood injection, and extracorporeal shock wave therapy in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis.Sixty patients (32 women, 28 men) with lateral epicondylitis were randomly divided into 3 groups: group 1 received a corticosteroid inj

Short wave diathermy in the symptomatic management of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease pain: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to both residue of acute and sub-acute recurrence of a previous infection or/and as a result of late detection of and intervention for upper tract pelvic infection. Owing to the chronic nature of the disease, which may require large doses of analgesics and/or antibiotics both of which may have side effects on the body, there is a need for a non-invasive therapeutic and symptomatic chronic pain management. The main purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of short wave diathermy (SWD) in the symptomatic manageme

(Third-wave) cognitive behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder in adults: A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) imposes a substantial burden on the patient and society. To manage GAD, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized psychotherapeutic approach. Moreover, the third-wave CBTs expand the treatment options and have the potential to positively impact patient outcomes and preferences. However, which CBT protocols or third-wave CBTs are the most effective and appropriate for use in primary care settings remains uncertain. This study explored the short-and long-term relative efficacy of various CBT protocols and third-wave CBTs in reducing GAD symptom

Anaesthesia for shock wave therapy in musculoskeletal disorders: a preliminary report.

The potential for using external applied energy to rectify or ameliorate musculoskeletal disorders has been explored for decades. A shock wave is a pressure disturbance: tissue effect is cavitation, producing microtrauma or microfracture and haematoma formation, inducing, as to date is thought, increase in vascularization, increased soft callus and faster enchondral ossification. Anaesthesiological interest in this field is focused in non-union or delayed osseous union, joint stiffness or osteochondrosis and femoral head necrosis in adults. Actually, because of the pain associated with high en

[Anaesthesia for shock wave therapy in orthopaedics].

Shock wave therapy (orthotripsy) is a non-invasive method to treat or ameliorate many musculoskeletal disorders. When higher energies are applied on bones pain is associated with treatment, and anaesthesia is necessary, but there is no need of analgesia after shock wave application. Patients usually receive treatments during a short hospital stay: therefore, short duration drugs and techniques should be preferred, avoiding those causing unpleasant postanaesthetic sequelae. Between February 2002 and October 2004, a series of 136 patients have been treated with orthotripsy requiring some kind of

A case of a short-coupled variant of torsades de Pointes with electrical storm.

This case report describes a short-coupled variant of Torsades de Pointes with a characteristic ECG pattern consisting of a prominent J wave in leads V3-V6, in which an electrical storm was evoked with autonomic receptor stimulation and a blockade test. The patient's frequent VF attacks were triggered by short-coupled premature ventricular contractions with a right bundle branch block morphology and left-axis deviation, and were suppressed by deep sedation followed by a combination therapy using verapamil and mexiletine. Interestingly, with the use of those drugs, the prominent J wave diminish

EEG Spectral Power Changes in Patients With Dysexecutive Syndrome Following Cognitive Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Acquired brain injury (ABI) leads to cognitive deficiencies, alteration of brain activity associated with an increase in slow-wave (delta and theta bands) power, and reduced fast-wave (alpha, beta, and gamma bands) power. To compensate for the cognitive deficits that impact autonomy and quality of life, patients in a chronic phase can benefit from cognitive intervention. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the effects of cognitive intervention on brain activity, measured by electroencephalography (EEG), and on executive functioning, assessed by the Test of Attentional Performance (TAP)

A comparative study of the efficacy of radial and focused shock wave therapy for tennis elbow depending on symptom duration.

INTRODUCTION: In physical therapy, the duration and severity of pain complaints determine the choice of an appropriate physical agent and parameters needed. The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy of focused and radial shock waves for tennis elbow with respect to the dysfunction period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients with acute (n = 27) and chronic (n = 31) tennis elbow were randomly assigned to a treatment arm: focused shock wave therapy (3 sessions, 2000 shocks, 4 Hz, 0.2 mJ/mm²) or radial shock wave therapy (3 sessions, 2000 shocks, 8 Hz, 2.5 bar). In order to obj

[Hyperthermia in malignant tumors of the extremities--experimental heating by a radiofrequency applicator and its clinical significance].

We studied hyperthermia for malignant tumors of the extremities, and obtained the following findings. In osteosarcoma cultured cells from OST (Human) and Dunn (Mouse), proliferation was clearly inhibited on being heated to 42 approximately 43 degrees C. On heat-treating the femurs of pigs, a rise in temperature to 42.5 degrees C or above was observed so that an antitumor effect could be anticipated. Moreover, no abnormal rise in temperature in the tissues surrounding the bone and light microscopy revealed no particular abnormalities. Clinically, a rise in temperature above 42.5 degrees C was o

Invasive Aspergillosis Complicating Severe COVID-19: Cumulative Incidence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes Between the First Wave of the Pandemic and Subsequent Waves, According to the ECMM/ISHAM Classification and a Local Case Assessment.

The role of severe COVID-19 as an independent risk factor for invasive aspergillosis remains debated, with reported incidences varying widely across studies. We compared the cumulative incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of invasive pulmonary mold infection (IPMI) in intensive care unit patients with confirmed COVID-19 during the first epidemic wave and subsequent waves up to March 2021 at La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris, France. Patients were systematically screened for fungal infections and classified according to ECMM/ISHAM criteria and a more stringent local assessment. The study in

Improved guinea pig model of cardiac tachyarrhythmias.

Guinea pigs are frequently used as models for ventricular tachyarrhythmias, including polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation. However, applications of the model for short-term therapies are limited because the arrhythmias are transient, typically lasting <5 sec. Thus, spontaneous termination cannot be easily distinguished from effective short-term therapy in standard models. Results of this study confirmed an improved induction method that consistently extends the arrhythmias to 30 sec or longer. In 10 (400- to 1200-g) male guinea pigs, a pacing electrode was adv

Protective measures of patients with cardiovascular diseases from exposure to heat waves: medicated and non-medicated.

In conditions of climate warming with an increase in heat waves associated with an increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the particular interest is the effect of cardiovascular drugs on adaptation to high temperatures. The review reflects the results of European and domestic studies on the safety of therapy during long and short heat waves. Recommendations for the correction of therapy during this period are given. Self-control of blood pressure (SCAD) is a mandatory component of the therapy of arterial hypertension during heat waves. With the development of clinically significan
