Shyness and timidity in young adults who were born at extremely low birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have noted personality differences among adult survivors of very preterm birth, including higher neuroticism and cautiousness and lower extraversion. We attempted to replicate and extend these recent studies by examining personality characteristics across multiple components of personality that traditionally define personality structure in a birth cohort of young adults born at extremely low birth weight (501-1000 g), the smallest and most at-risk infants. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: We assessed 71 (76% of the original birth cohort) extremely low birth weight and 83 (7

Behavioral inhibition system and self-esteem as mediators between shyness and social anxiety.

Shyness has been demonstrated to be an important factor associating with social anxiety. However, it is less clear on the mechanisms responsible for such association. The aim of the present study was to examine whether behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and self-esteem mediated the relationship between shyness and social anxiety. A sample of 521 healthy volunteers in the age range of 18-25 years completed self-report measures of BIS, self-esteem, shyness and social anxiety. Our correlational analyses showed that shyness was positively associated with social anxiety, supporting the overlapping

Pre-treatment shyness mindset predicts less reduction of social anxiety during exposure therapy.

This study examined the moderating role of shyness mindset on the reduction of social anxiety during exposure-based treatment. Participants (N=60) in an intensive outpatient program for anxiety disorders were assessed at pre- and post-treatment. Social performance anxiety decreased dramatically during treatment, but the amount of decrease differed as a function of pre-treatment shyness mindset. At one standard deviation above the mean on both the social performance anxiety and shyness mindset measures, an average reduction of 15 points on the social performance anxiety measure was observed. At

Positive Shyness in the Brain: Frontal Electroencephalogram Alpha Asymmetry and Delta-Beta Correlation in Children.

Positive shyness is thought to be an approach-dominant form of shyness, whereas non-positive shyness is thought to be an avoidance-dominant form of shyness. This study examined electrocortical and behavioral correlates of motivation and emotion in relation to these shy subtypes in 67 children (Mage  = 10.41 years, SD = 3.23). Using resting state electroencephalography, findings revealed that positive shy and low shy children had greater relative left frontal alpha asymmetry compared to non-positive shy children, and positive shy children had a higher frontal delta-beta correlation compared to

Influence of the serotonin transporter promoter gene and shyness on children's cerebral responses to facial expressions.

BACKGROUND: Childhood shyness can predate social anxiety disorder and may be associated with biased discrimination of facial expressions of emotions. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether childhood shyness, or the serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism genotype, can predict participants' visual event-related potentials in response to expressions of children of similar ages. DESIGN: Study group drawn from an inception cohort of 149 subjects characterized 1 year before the present study by their degree of shyness. SETTING: Third- and fourth-grade schoolchildren. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-nine of th

Shyness 3: randomized controlled trial of guided versus unguided Internet-based CBT for social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: In two previous randomized controlled trials Titov et al. demonstrated significant benefit from an Internet- and email-based treatment programme for social phobia. The present study (Shyness 3) explores whether participants are able to complete this programme independently. METHOD: A total of 98 individuals with social phobia were randomly assigned to a clinician-assisted computerized cognitive behavioural treatment (CaCCBT) group, a self-guided computerized CBT (CCBT) group, or to a waitlist control group. CaCCBT group participants completed the usual Shyness programme consisting

What Do We Think of Shy Adults? Influence of One's Own Shyness and Sociability.

OBJECTIVE: Shyness is a ubiquitous personality characteristic present across historical time and cultures. Yet, little is known about perceptions of shy adults in Western society. We examined emerging adults' perceptions of shy and sociable women and whether one's own personality influenced their perceptions. METHOD: Participants (N = 301, Mage = 19.07 years) were randomized to read a vignette describing either a prototypical shy woman or a prototypical sociable woman and rated their perceptions of the woman in the vignette on various qualities. Participants' shyness and sociability were self

Vigilant or avoidant? Children's temperamental shyness, patterns of gaze, and physiology during social threat.

Temperamental shyness is characterized by fear, wariness, and the perception of threat in response to social novelty. Previous work has been inconsistent regarding attentional patterns to social threat among shy children, with evidence for both avoidance and vigilance. We examined relations between children's shyness and gaze aversion during the approach of a stranger (i.e., a context of social novelty), and tested whether these patterns of gaze moderated relations between shyness and autonomic reactivity and recovery. Participants included 152 typically-developing children (Mage  = 7.82 years

Linking Temperamental Shyness and Social Anxiety in Childhood and Adolescence: Moderating Influences of Sex and Age.

Although childhood shyness has been linked to social anxiety problems, the factors playing a role in this association have gone largely unexplored. Here we examined the potential moderating roles of sex and age on this relation in a sample of 119 (75 girls) children (10-12 years) and adolescents (14-16 years). As predicted, shyness was positively associated with social anxiety symptoms. Sex, but not age, served as a moderating factor in linking shyness and social anxiety. Specifically, shyness was more strongly associated with social anxiety symptoms among girls than boys. These results sugges

Childhood Shyness and Negative Social Cognitions in Emerging Adulthood: Adolescent Negative Peer Experiences as Moderators.

The purpose of this study was to use long-term longitudinal data to determine whether childhood shyness is associated with later negative social cognitions (rejection sensitivity and fear of negative evaluation) in emerging adulthood. Additionally, the prospective exacerbating roles of adolescent victimization and exclusion (self- and peer-reported) were examined. Participants were 119 Dutch individuals (50.5% male) from the Nijmegen Longitudinal Study, assessed at ages 9, 13, 16, and 21. Results showed a positive association between childhood shyness and emerging adult rejection sensitivity t

Relations between shyness-sensitivity and internalizing problems in Chinese children: moderating effects of academic achievement.

Shy-sensitive children are likely to develop adjustment problems in today's urban China as the country has evolved into an increasingly competitive, market-oriented society. The main purpose of this one-year longitudinal study was to examine the moderating effects of academic achievement on relations between shyness-sensitivity and later internalizing problems in Chinese children. A sample of 1171 school-age children (591 boys, 580 girls) in China, initially at the age of 9 years, participated in the study. Data on shyness, academic achievement, and internalizing problems were collected from m

Avoidant personality disorder, generalized social phobia, and shyness: putting the personality back into personality disorders.

With increasing recognition of social phobia as a common and often debilitating disorder, interest is developing in its boundaries with other disorders such as avoidant personality disorder and temperamental constructs such as shyness. Such interest reflects the more general debate concerning Axis I disorders, personality disorders, and what is considered normal personality variance. This review summarizes the available literature comparing avoidant personality disorder (APD), generalized social phobia (GSP), and shyness. In studies comparing APD and GSP, comorbidity rates have varied from app

Exploring the interplay of discrimination perception, alexithymia, and shyness among hearing-impaired college students: a network approach.

BACKGROUND: Hearing-impaired college students face limitations in auditory and verbal communication, placing them at higher risk for mental health problems. While previous studies have mostly used traditional structural equation models to examine the relationship between discrimination perception and psychological adaptation issues, these approaches have difficulty capturing complex nonlinear associations and dynamic interactions between variables. This study adopted a network analysis perspective to explore the association patterns between discrimination perception, shyness, and alexithymia a

The relationship between smartphone addiction and shyness among medical college students: The mediating effect of self-acceptance.

Smartphone addiction has become a widespread issue affecting the mental health of medical students. Shyness, a common personality trait, and self-acceptance have not been fully explored for their associative relationships with smartphone addiction among this population. This study aimed to explore the relationships among shyness, self-acceptance, and smartphone addiction, and to examine the mediating role of self-acceptance in these relationships. We adopted a cross-sectional survey, using the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version, Shyness Scale, and Self-Acceptance Questionnaire, to conduc

Vascular disease risk factors, urinary free cortisol, and health histories in older adults: shyness and gender interactions.

We studied relationships between shyness and health during a health screening survey of older adults (ages 50-88) living in an active retirement community in the southwestern United States (n = 232). As in previous studies of infants, older individuals with hay fever, insomnia and constipation were more shy than those without these problems. Shy persons overall showed higher sitting systolic blood pressure and a larger fall in orthostatic systolic blood pressure on standing; shy men had a greater prevalence of hypertension histories than did low-shy men. Shy subjects of both sexes had lower HD

Examination of Early Childhood Temperament of Shyness and Social Avoidance and Associations With Cardiometabolic Health in Young Adulthood.

IMPORTANCE: A child temperament characterized by shyness and avoidance of social interactions is associated with poor peer relationships and emotional problems, yet its long-term associations with adult cardiometabolic health are largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether a childhood temperament characterized by shyness and avoidance of social interactions is associated with poor cardiometabolic health. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included participants who were recruited at birth between April 1991 to December 1992 as part of a prospective longitudinal cohort, th

Shyness, social anxiety, social anxiety disorder, and substance use among normative adolescent populations: A systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Researchers have increasingly studied shyness, social anxiety, and social anxiety disorder (SAD) as potential precursors of substance use. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to review the relationships between these variables and tobacco use, alcohol use, and cannabis/drug use in normative adolescent populations and the extent to which these associations differ by gender. METHODS: A systematic search in PsycINFO and PubMed was conducted, reference screening was performed, and five experts were consulted. RESULTS: Fifty articles published between 1980 and 2016 were inclu

[Case study--relationship between prevalence of shyness, social phobia and avoidant personality in male sexual disorders].

UNLABELLED: Social phobia, avoidant personality disorder and shyness are very akin disorders, despite the fact that the first two are mental disorders, whereas the third is found mainly in lay or psychological literature. The relationship between these disorders and male sexual disorders can only be hypothesized from clinical studies and psychopathological theories. Social phobia, avoidant personality disorder, and shyness, share a probable indirect responsibility in sexual disorders because they impair the ability of subjects to meet partners. There are only a few direct studies of the negati

The role of shyness in cyberbullying perpetration: a moderated mediation model of relative deprivation, anger rumination, and Internet morality.

Although the relationship between shyness and aggression has been well established, whether shyness is associated with cyberbullying perpetration and its underlying mechanisms has been unclear. Guided by the General Aggression Model (GAM), this study proposed that shyness, as a personal trait, is related to cyberbullying perpetration through cognitive and emotional processes. Specifically, we developed a moderated mediation model to examine the mediating roles of relative deprivation and anger rumination, as well as the moderating role of Internet morality, in the relationship between shyness
