Sick building syndrome (SBS) is the term used to describe the medical condition in which people in a building suffer from symptoms of illnesses for no apparent reason. SBS was found to be associated with indoor air quality (IAQ) but there are a variety of determinants (buildings, in particular). Identifying and controlling factors related to SBS is crucial for improving worker health and efficiency. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate (1) the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and skin SBS and (2) their associations with IAQ among office workers in administrative offices in an

UNLABELLED: There are few incidence studies on sick building syndrome (SBS). We studied two-year change of SBS in Chinese pupils in relation to parental asthma/allergy (heredity), own atopy, classroom temperature, relative humidity (RH), absolute humidity (AH), crowdedness, CO₂, NO₂, and SO₂. A total of 1993 participated at baseline, and 1143 stayed in the same classrooms after two years. The prevalence of mucosal and general symptoms was 33% and 28% at baseline and increased during follow-up (P < 0.001). Twenty-seven percent reported at least one symptom improved when away from school. Heredi

There are few studies on associations between airborne microbial exposure, formaldehyde, plasticizers in dwellings and the symptoms compatible with the sick building syndrome (SBS). As a follow-up of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS II), indoor measurements were performed in homes in three North European cities. The aim was to examine whether volatile organic compounds of possible microbial origin (MVOCs), and airborne levels of bacteria, molds, formaldehyde, and two plasticizers in dwellings were associated with the prevalence of SBS, and to study associations between M

In this questionnaire study, the authors compared the prevalence of certain symptoms and signs associated with Sick Building Syndrome and perceptions relative to environmental discomfort of employees in a central-air-conditioned dropping center and in natural-ventilation commercial shops located on the streets of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There was a statistically significant higher prevalence of symptoms (e.g., water and itching of eyes, sore throat, nose irritation, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, sneezing) that were characteristic of Sick Building Syndrome in the air-condition

Modern, non-industrial workplaces may, because of building techniques, widespread use of synthetic materials and artificial ventilation, create risks for the health and well-being of workers. Indoor air pollution by chemical, biological and sometimes physical agents constitutes a significant risk factor, particularly for the respiratory system. The most common effects of exposure to, and inhalation of, indoor air pollutants include acute and chronic inflammations, acute worsening of pre-existing respiratory symptoms or illnesses and airway sensitization to indoor allergens. Upper airway distur

Microscopic fungi are important biological pollutants in the indoor environment, they are spread generally: on building materials, carpets, ceiling tiles, insulations, any surfaces, wallpapers, or in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Molds are able to grow on any materials, as long as moisture and oxygen are available. Exposure to fungi in indoor environments (esp. in water-damaged buildings) can cause adverse health effects, such as allergy, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonia, mucous membrane irritation, different toxic effects, or even mycoses (in immunocompromised individu

Moisture, microbial and in particular mold related indoor exposure and health problems in homes, offices, and public buildings (Kindergartens, schools, library, and hospitals) have been gaining recognition as one of the most common indoor environmental health issues. Proper recognition of microbial related health problems and the differential diagnosis of sick building syndrome (SBS) or building related illness (BRI) are important for early and effective exposure intervention, treatment, referral and prevention of more serious illness.

Building related illnesses are a common problem in developed countries and are expected to increase rapidly in urban India. Although objective physical abnormalities are not generally found except in a few specific diseases like Legionnaires' disease, the symptoms can be uncomfortable and even disabling. In this review we initially introduce the concept of indoor air pollution and building related illnesses. Subsequently we review the sources of and exposure to the pollutants along with their health effects and the approach to a patient of suspected building related illness. We conclude by dis

A methodology for identifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and determining air quality of indoor air has been developed. The air samples are collected using pump samplers by the inhabitants when they perceive odorous and/or discomfort episodes. Glass multi-sorbent tubes are connected to the pump samplers for the retention of VOC. The analysis is performed by automatic thermal desorption (ATD) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). This methodology can be applied in cases of sick building syndrome (SBS) evaluation, in which building occupants experience a series of vari

In 'sick building syndrome' and other questionable environmental conditions, it is important to consider eye troubles. This review deals with several objective methods relevant for pollution keratoconjunctivitis. A hypothesis is put forward: A reduced lipid layer of the tear film causes reduced break-up time, increased vital staining and increased number of cells in the conjunctival fluid.

This study reviews the occurrence and most common health effect of exposure to moulds in different environment. The short characteristic of chosen toxigenic fungi and the major mycotoxin classes was also presented. Exposure to allergens may cause human disease, including allergic rhinitis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis asthma and sick building syndrome. Moulds also reveal carcinogenic, cytotoxic, and neurotoxic properties.

Building materials have been developed mainly for thermal performance, strength, low energy consumption, and aesthetics. Consequently, large amounts of chemicals have been added to building products, resulting in the release of abundant pollutants that adversely affect human health. In particular, pollutants from the materials used to build modern dwellings can cause sick house syndrome, which leads to health resilience problems and diseases. In this study, more than 100 investigations were conducted annually from 2004 to 2017 by using the 20 L small chamber method to analyze the contents of f

Increasingly recognized as a potential public health problem since the outbreak of Legionnaire's disease in Philadelphia in 1976, polluted indoor air has been associated with health problems that include asthma, sick building syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Symptoms are often nonspecific and include headache, eye and throat irritation, chest tightness and shortness of breath, and fatigue. Air-borne contaminants include commonly used chemicals, vehicular exhaust, microbial organisms, fibrous glass particles, and dust. Identified causes include defectiv

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is one of the fundamental elements affecting people's health and well-being. Currently, there is a lack of awareness among people about the quantification, identification, and possible health effects of IAQ. Airborne pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (NO), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) microbial spores, pollen, allergens, etc. primarily contribute to IAQ deterioration. This review discusses the sources of major indoor air pollutants, molecular toxicity mecha
