Recognition bias for critical faces in social phobia: a replication and extension.

Studies using linguistic stimuli have provided little support for explicit memory biases among individuals with social phobia (SP). However, using facial stimuli rated on their criticalness, Lundh and Ost (1996) found that individuals with SP recognized more critical than accepting faces, whereas non-anxious controls tended to show the opposite pattern. Since the publication of Lundh and Ost's findings, additional studies using a variety of facial stimuli have produced inconsistent findings (J. Anxiety Disord. 14 (2000) 501; Behav. Res. Ther. 39 (2001) 967). Unfortunately, these inconsistencie

TMS of the anterior intraparietal area selectively modulates orientation change detection during action preparation.

Perception of relevant visual object features can be modulated by the preparation of an action toward it ("action-modulated perception"). For instance, the perception of the orientation of a book can be enhanced when preparing to grasp it (but not when pointing to it). However, the underlying neuronal mechanisms are poorly understood. We argue that brain areas controlling arm movements are involved in establishing this effect through top-down feedback to early visual areas, similar to the neuronal mechanisms linking visual attention and eye movements. To investigate this involvement, we applie

Does scent attractiveness reveal women's ovulatory timing? Evidence from signal detection analyses and endocrine predictors of odour attractiveness.

Odour cues associated with shifts in ovarian hormones indicate ovulatory timing in females of many nonhuman species. Although prior evidence supports women's body odours smelling more attractive on days when conception is possible, that research has left ambiguous how diagnostic of ovulatory timing odour cues are, as well as whether shifts in odour attractiveness are correlated with shifts in ovarian hormones. Here, 46 women each provided six overnight scent and corresponding day saliva samples spaced five days apart, and completed luteinizing hormone tests to determine ovulatory timing. Scent

Is There a Relationship Between Speech Identification in Noise and Categorical Perception in Children With Dyslexia?

PURPOSE: Children with dyslexia have been suggested to experience deficits in both categorical perception (CP) and speech identification in noise (SIN) perception. However, results regarding both abilities are inconsistent, and the relationship between them is still unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CP and the psychometric function of SIN perception. METHOD: Sixteen children with dyslexia, 16 chronological-age controls, and 16 reading-level controls were evaluated in CP of a voicing continuum and in consonant identification in both stationary and flu

The perception of lexical tone in Mambila.

The issue of the perception of lexical tone has been addressed mainly through studies of Southeast Asian languages which feature phonological contour tones as well as level tones. Little attention has been paid to African languages which have, almost exclusively, only level tones. This paper examines tone perception in Mambila, a Benue-Congo language with four level lexical tones. A categorization experiment was run to determine some of the salient aspects of the perceptual nature of these tones. Since the four tones are well defined with respect to production, we sought to determine whether t

False recognition in women with a history of childhood emotional neglect and diagnose of recurrent major depression.

While previous research has suggested that adults with a history of childhood sexual abuse may be more prone to produce false memories, little is known about the consequences of childhood neglect on basic memory processes. For this reason, the authors investigated how a group of women with a history of childhood emotional neglect (CEN) and diagnosed with recurrent Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) performed on the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm in comparison to control groups. The results indicated that women with MDD and CEN were actually less prone to produce false memories relative to both

To Believe or Not to Believe in Conspiracy Claims? That Is a Question for Signal Detection Theory.

Conspiracy mentality is conceptualized as a continuum. Research on this topic has focused on unwarranted conspiracy claims and the upper end of the conspiracy-mentality continuum-people seeing conspiracies everywhere. This focus neglects warranted conspiracy claims and the lower end of the continuum. To better understand conspiracy mentality, we aimed to clarify both ends of the continuum using signal detection theory. We examined how people evaluate warranted and unwarranted conspiracy claims across levels of conspiracy mentality in two studies with 331 French-speaking adult participants from

Interaural level difference discrimination thresholds for single neurons in the lateral superior olive.

The lateral superior olive (LSO) is one of the earliest sites in the auditory pathway that is involved in processing acoustical cues to sound location. Here, we tested the hypothesis that LSO neurons can signal small changes in interaural level differences (ILDs), a cue to horizontal sound location, of pure tones based on discharge rate consistent with psychophysical performance in the discrimination of ILDs. Neural thresholds for ILD discrimination were determined from the discharge rates and associated response variability of single units in response to 300 ms tones in the LSO of barbiturate

The effect of gender in the perception of elder physical abuse in court.

Two experiments investigated mock jurors' perceptions of elder abuse (EA) in a physical assault case. In Experiment 1, participants read a fictional criminal trial summary of a physical assault case in which the alleged victim was 66, 76, or 86 years old. In Experiment 2, the age of the alleged victim was 76 years old, but the gender of the alleged victim and the gender of the defendant were crossed. The results of the experiments showed that women believed the alleged victim more and rendered a guilty verdict more often than men. Overall, the alleged victim was believed more than the defendan

Memory for facial expressions in social phobia.

Memory biases toward threat have been documented in several anxiety disorders, but contradictory findings have recently been reported in social phobics' recognition of facial expressions. The present study examined recognition memory in clients with social phobia, in an effort to clarify previous inconsistent results. Just before giving a speech to a live audience, social phobia clients and normal controls viewed photographs of people with reassuring and threatening facial expressions. The stimuli were later presented again alongside photographs of the same person with a different facial expre

What's working in working memory: a role for the Central Executive.

Two experiments are reported which seek to explore the nature of the Central Executive of Baddeley's (Baddeley and Hitch, 1974) model of working memory. Experiment 1 uses a dual task methodology to compare performance on two storage tasks, making use of the two slave systems, the Phonological Loop (PL) and the Visuo-Spatial Scratch Pad (VSSP). Results suggest that storage can be thought of as based on the use of slave system independent resources. Experiment 2 uses a similar approach to compare performance on 2 processing tasks, again one PL based, the other VSSP based. These results suggest t

The effects of repetitive contractions and ischemia on the ability to discriminate intramuscular sensation.

In order to investigate whether repetitive, low-level, muscular contractions or ischemia affect the ability of subjects to discriminate electrical stimuli delivered to the forearm musculature, a total of 25 experiments was performed on a group of five healthy subjects utilizing signal detection methodology. EMG needle electrodes were inserted into the forearm extensor musculature and the discriminability of two different pairs of constant current electrical stimuli were measured for sequential blocks of 100 trials, before and after the experimental interventions. Repetitive muscular activity c

A signal-on electrochemiluminescence sensor for clenbuterol detection based on zinc-based metal-organic framework-reduced graphene oxide-CdTe quantum dot hybrids.

Clenbuterol (CLB) is harmful to human health when used long term, and it has been listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In this work, a novel zinc-based metal-organic frameworks-reduced graphene oxide-CdTe quantum dots (ZnMOF-RGO-CdTe QDs) hybrid was used to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for detecting CLB. CdTe QDs, loaded by RGO, exhibited an enhanced ECL signal. In addition, the ZnMOFs catalyzed OH• generation by coreactant H2O2, which further strengthened the ECL signal of the CdTe QDs. The integration of ZnMOFs and RGO-CdTe QDs endowed the sensor with high sen

A full-range sweat rate sensor with superhydrophobic heterophase shunt for psychology, skin health and body dehydration evaluating.

Sweat secretion provides insights into physiological and psychological states. However, the current single detection method is not compatible with the simultaneous monitoring of gaseous and liquid sweat, which restricts its application for exploring dynamic physiological processes. Herein, a fully integrated sweat sensor with a heterophase shunt for full-range sweat rate monitoring is reported. Through non-interfering integration of epidermal microfluidic conductivity sensing and humidity detection, continuous measurement across 0.182 ∼ 10 μL/(min·cm2) is achieved. The effect of auditory verbal imagery on signal detection in hallucination-prone individuals.

Cognitive models have suggested that auditory hallucinations occur when internal mental events, such as inner speech or auditory verbal imagery (AVI), are misattributed to an external source. This has been supported by numerous studies indicating that individuals who experience hallucinations tend to perform in a biased manner on tasks that require them to distinguish self-generated from non-self-generated perceptions. However, these tasks have typically been of limited relevance to inner speech models of hallucinations, because they have not manipulated the AVI that participants used during t

Coherent versus component motion perception in autism spectrum disorder.

Research on visual perception in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) tries to reveal the underlying mechanisms of aberrant local and global processing. Global motion perception is one way to study this aspect of ASD. We used plaid motion stimuli, which can be perceived as a coherently moving pattern, requiring feature integration, or as two transparent gratings sliding over each other. If global motion detection is impaired in ASD, this would lead to a decrease of the total time that a coherent pattern is perceived. However, in contrast to other studies in the literature, our results gave no eviden

The role of experience-based perceptual learning in the face inversion effect.

Perceptual learning of the type we consider here is a consequence of experience with a class of stimuli. It amounts to an enhanced ability to discriminate between stimuli. We argue that it contributes to the ability to distinguish between faces and recognize individuals, and in particular contributes to the face inversion effect (better recognition performance for upright vs inverted faces). Previously, we have shown that experience with a prototype defined category of checkerboards leads to perceptual learning, that this produces an inversion effect, and that this effect can be disrupted by A

Menstrual cycle effects on a VDT-based simulation task: cognitive indices and subjective ratings.

It is unclear whether the menstrual cycle affects the basics of performance, mainly task performance and cognitive functions. We examined menstrual cycle effects on VDT-based task performance, cognitive indices based on the signal-detection theory, and subjective ratings in questionnaires. We experimented in three phases: premenstrual, menstrual and postmenstrual phases. Previous studies reported premenstrual tension syndrome (PMST) in the premenstrual phase. Women used physiological and psychological strategies to cope during the menstrual phase. However, task performance, cognitive indices a

Multiplexed femtomolar detection of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in biofluids using a reduced graphene oxide field-effect transistor.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that accounts for 70% of all dementia. Early stage diagnosis of AD is essential as there is no certain treatment after the lesion has progressed in the late stage. Nevertheless, there are still limitations of early diagnosis of AD using neuroimaging and psychological memory assessments. Here, we demonstrate ultrasensitive and multiplexed detection of pivotal AD biomarkers (Aβ1-42 and t-Tau) in biofluids using a reduced graphene oxide field-effect transistor (gFET). The proposed approach provides a wide logarithmically linear range of dete
