Impact of imaging cross-section on visualization of thyroid microvessels using ultrasound: Pilot study.

Non-invasive, contrast-free microvascular imaging of human thyroids can be potentially beneficial in reducing the large number of benign biopsies of suspicious nodules. However, motion incurred by thyroid due to its proximity to the pulsating carotid artery significantly impacts the visualization of blood flow in small vessels. Singular value based spatiotemporal clutter filtering (SVD-STF) improves the performance of tissue rejection in the presence of motion. However, despite effective clutter filtering, motion in thyroid imaging can impact coherent integration of the Doppler ensemble and de

Noninvasive heart rate estimation using semantic segmentation and parameter optimization on 4K UAV videos.

We propose a method for noninvasive heart rate (HR) estimation from ultra-high-definition (4K) UAV-recorded videos, leveraging general-purpose instance segmentation without retraining or manual annotation. The method integrates Fast Segment Anything (FastSAM) with silhouette tracking and signal processing techniques. To address segmentation reliability, we introduce a lightweight heuristic metric (Cseg) that detects abrupt changes in the region of interest, enabling the rejection of unreliable frames. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm is further employed to fine-tune preprocessing and estimatio

Compensation method for the influence of angle of view on animal temperature measurement using thermal imaging camera combined with depth image.

In the study, we proposed an animal surface temperature measurement method based on Kinect sensor and infrared thermal imager to facilitate the screening of animals with febrile diseases. Due to random motion and small surface temperature variation of animals, the influence of the angle of view on temperature measurement is significant. The method proposed in the present study could compensate the temperature measurement error caused by the angle of view. Firstly, we analyzed the relationship between measured temperature and angle of view and established the mathematical model for compensating

High-Density and High-Coverage Composite Atrial Activation Maps: An In-Silico Validation Study.

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive atrial activation patterns (RAAPs) during complex atrial tachycardia could be associated with localized mechanisms that can be targeted. Clinically available electroanatomical mapping systems are limited by either the spatial coverage or electrode density of the mapping catheters, preventing the adequate visualization of transiently occurring RAAPs. This work proposes a technique to overcome this shortcoming by stitching spatially overlapping conduction patterns together to a larger image- called a composite map. METHODS: Simulated stable mechanisms and meandering reentr

Quantification and Analysis of Laryngeal Closure From Endoscopic Videos.

OBJECTIVE: At present, there are no objective techniques to quantify and describe laryngeal obstruction, and the reproducibility of subjective manual quantification methods is insufficient, resulting in diagnostic inaccuracy and a poor signal-to-noise ratio in medical research. In this work, a workflow is proposed to quantify laryngeal movements from laryngoscopic videos, to facilitate the diagnosis procedure. METHODS: The proposed method analyses laryngoscopic videos, and delineates glottic opening, vocal folds, and supraglottic structures, using a convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based

Parsing local signal evolution directly from a single-shot MRI signal: a new approach for fMRI.

In this work a new single-shot MRI method, single-shot parameter assessment by retrieval from signal encoding (SS-PARSE), is introduced. This method abandons a fundamental simplifying assumption that is used in conventional MRI methods. Established MRI methods implicitly assume that the local intrinsic signal does not change its amplitude or phase during signal acquisition, even though these changes may be substantial, especially during the relatively long signals used in single-shot image acquisitions. SS-PARSE, on the other hand, acknowledges local decay and phase evolution, and models each

A Deep Learning Framework Based on Denoising and 2D Image Encoding for Arrhythmia Classification.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are essential for arrhythmia detection; however, they are frequently degraded by noise during acquisition, and their evaluation is vulnerable to data-leakage and patient-overlap issues that can compromise model assessment. Therefore, in this study, we propose an image-encoding-based arrhythmia classifier combined with a morphology-aware denoising autoencoder. We evaluate signals under a corrected, patient-independent protocol in which every model-selection decision was made on a separate validation partition. On a leakage-free test partition, the autoencoder ach

Computer-aided diagnosis of congestive heart failure using ECG signals - A review.

The heart muscle pumps blood to vital organs, which is indispensable for human life. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is characterized by the inability of the heart to pump blood adequately throughout the body without an increase in intracardiac pressure. The symptoms include lung and peripheral congestion, leading to breathing difficulty and swollen limbs, dizziness from reduced delivery of blood to the brain, as well as arrhythmia. Coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and medical co-morbidities such as kidney disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure all take a toll on the heart an

Explainable framework to detect Parkinson's disease related depression from EEG.

Depression is a non-motor symptom inherent to Parkinson's disease (PD). As an early manifestation of PD, PD-related depression is hard to diagnose, thereby contributing to morbidity. Recent endeavors have employed deep learning networks to assist in the diagnosis of PD and depression, achieving commendable levels of accuracy. However, little attention has been directed toward PD-related depression, and the decision process of the network lacks transparency and explainability. What has been learned by the network and whether pathological mechanisms contribute to the classifier's result remain m

Real-Time Hybrid DAS/F-DMAS Blockwise Beamforming in Imaging Systems With 2-D Matrix Arrays and Embedded Microbeamformers.

The high-quality 3-D imaging can be obtained by means of densely populated 2-D matrix array probes that embed a microbeamformer ( $\mu $ BF). Delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming is achieved by compensating for fine delays in the $\mu $ BF, and for coarse delays in the associated scanner. Modifying the operation of the $\mu $ BF integrated into the probe is really challenging, and this has discouraged the possible adoption of different beamforming algorithms. This experimental study evaluates whether the contrast and resolution benefits of the filtered-delay multiply and sum (F-DMAS) beamforming al

Ultra-high resolution and multi-shell diffusion MRI of intact ex vivo human brains using kT-dSTEAM at 9.4T.

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) in ex vivo human brain specimens is an important research tool for neuroanatomical investigations and the validation of dMRI techniques. Many ex vivo dMRI applications have benefited from very high dMRI resolutions achievable on small-bore preclinical or animal MRI scanners for small tissue samples. However, the investigation of entire human brains post mortem provides the important context of entire white matter (WM) network systems and entire gray matter (GM) areas connected through these systems. The investigation of intact ex vivo human brains in large bore systems cre

Blood flow measurement by magnetic resonance imaging in congenital heart disease.

Investigation of blood flow in the heart and vessels may provide insight into the function of the cardiovascular system and aid patient management decisions. Phase velocity cine magnetic resonance imaging (PVC MRI) is a powerful and accurate noninvasive technique to quantitate and analyze blood flow. This article describes the principles, performance, and potential limitations of PVC MRI measurements. Clinical applications of PVC MRI are then reviewed with an emphasis on the assessment of congenital heart disease.

Physics-Informed Tensor Velocity Reconstruction From 2-D Velocity Estimates Using Row-Column Probes.

A method is presented for estimating 3-D velocity fields over space-time (tensor velocity fields) by combining 2-D velocity estimates acquired in multiple imaging planes with the continuity equation. The proposed tensor velocity estimator accurately reconstructs flow within the aliasing limit and mitigates motion-related artifacts observed in synthetic aperture (SA) and plane wave imaging (PWI) techniques, which typically reduce estimation accuracy at higher velocities. The estimator is demonstrated using both a short imaging sequence, which estimates the tensor velocity field in a thin volume

Attenuation Tomography Using Low-Frequency Ultrasound for Thorax Imaging: Feasibility Study.

Low-frequency ultrasound can permeate human thorax and can be applied in functional imaging of the respiratory system. In this study, we investigate the transmission of low-frequency ultrasound through the human thorax and propose a waveform matching method to track the changes in the transmission signal during subject's respiration. The method's effectiveness is validated through experiments involving ten human subjects. Furthermore, the experimental findings indicate that the traveltime of the first-arrival signal remains consistent throughout the respiratory cycle. Leveraging this observati

Investigation of alterations in multifractality in optical coherence tomographic images of in vivo human retina.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables us to monitor alterations in the thickness of the retinal layer as disease progresses in the human retina. However, subtle morphological changes in the retinal layers due to early disease progression often may not lead to detectable alterations in the thickness. OCT images encode depth-dependent backscattered intensity distribution arising due to the depth distributions of the refractive index from tissue microstructures. Here, such depth-resolved refractive index variations of different retinal layers were analyzed using multifractal detrended fluctu

MCAN: Multimodal Causal Adversarial Networks for Dynamic Effective Connectivity Learning From fMRI and EEG Data.

Dynamic effective connectivity (DEC) is the accumulation of effective connectivity in the time dimension, which can describe the continuous neural activities in the brain. Recently, learning DEC from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) data has attracted the attention of neuroinformatics researchers. However, the current methods fail to consider the gap between the fMRI and EEG modality, which can not precisely learn the DEC network from multimodal data. In this paper, we propose a multimodal causal adversarial network for DEC learning, named MCAN. The
