Gas cell- and Fabry-Pérot interferometer-based self-calibration filtering system for a tunable laser to enhance the optical signal-to-noise ratio.

This study presents a self-calibrating synchronous filtering system that improves the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of external-cavity tunable lasers. It integrates a hydrogen cyanide gas cell with a Fabry-Pérot interferometer featuring a 1.5-GHz free spectral range for real-time wavelength calibration over a 1535-1555-nm sweep band. Leveraging this calibration process, a field-programmable gate array processes spectral fingerprints and dynamically controls a microelectromechanical system-based tunable optical filter, allowing the passband of the filter to synchronously track the instan

A new approach to generate a two-dimensional asynchronous spectrum with improved signal-to-noise ratio using multiple two-trace two-dimensional spectra.

In this paper, a new approach is proposed to construct a two-dimensional (2D) asynchronous spectrum with a much-improved signal-to-noise level. The method produces a total number of sub-2D asynchronous spectra via a two-trace two-dimensional method (2T2D method) using n one-dimensional (1D) spectra. The final 2D asynchronous spectrum is a linear combination of this set of sub-2D asynchronous spectra with optimized combinatorial coefficients. The signs of the sub-2D asynchronous spectra are aligned to be consistent, thereby preventing undesirable cancellation of signals among different sub-2D a

Combining Engineered Probe Library with Tiered Screening for the Rational Discovery of Alzheimer's Diagnostic Probe with an Enhanced Signal-to-Noise Ratio.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is neuropathologically defined by the deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques, a key diagnostic biomarker. However, current fluorescence probes targeting Aβ plaques are often limited by poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration and short blood circulation half-lives, resulting in insufficient signal-to-noise ratios for in vivo imaging. To address this, we developed a rationally engineered near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent molecular probe library and implemented a tiered, closed-loop screening strategy for the discovery of probes, enabling high-fidelity in situ visualizatio

Iodine-Vacancy BiOI Nanosheets-Embedded on Bi2O3 Electrospun Heterojunction for Label-Free Interleukin-6 Photoelectrochemical Aptasensor with High Signal-to-Noise Ratio.

Lower-background photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis is crucial for high-sensitivity biomolecule detection and early clinical disease screening by effectively eliminating matrix interference and reducing the background photocurrent noise. In this work, a novel, simple, label-free split-type PEC aptasensor was successfully constructed for interleukin-6 (IL-6) analysis based on electrospun Bi2O3 nanofibers (NFs) coupled with in situ grown iodine vacancy (IV) BiOI nanosheets (IV-BiOI/Bi2O3 NFs). The introduction of heterojunction interfaces and IV in BiOI/Bi2O3 NFs can synergistically regulate

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization matrix incorporation evaluation algorithm for improved peak coverage and signal-to-noise ratio in mass spectrometry imaging.

RATIONALE: Despite decades of implementation, the selection of optimal sample preparation conditions for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) imaging is still ambiguous due to the lack of a universal and comprehensive evaluation methodology. Thus, numerous experiments with different matrix application conditions accompany a translation of the method to novel sample types and matrices. METHODS: Mouse brain tissues were covered with 9-aminoacridine through sublimation, followed by recrystallization in vapors of 5% (v/v) methanol solution in water. The samples were analyzed by MAL

Signal-to-noise ratio of bilateral nonimaging transcranial Doppler recordings of the middle cerebral artery is not affected by age and sex.

Differences between transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) recordings of symmetrical vessels can show true physiologic differences, but can also be caused by measurement error and other sources of noise. The aim of this project was to assess the influence of noise on estimates of dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA), and of age, sex and breathing manoeuvres on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was monitored in 30 young (<40 years) and 30 older volunteers (age >60 years) during baseline conditions, breath-holding and hyperventilation. Noise was defined as the diffe

Influence of signal-to-noise ratio, glaucoma stage and segmentation algorithm on OCT usability for quantifying layer thicknesses in the peripapillary retina.

PURPOSE: OCT can be used for glaucoma assessment, but its usefulness may depend on image quality, disease stage and segmentation algorithm. We aimed to determine how layer thicknesses as assessed with different algorithms depend on image quality and disease stage, how reproducible the algorithms are, and if the algorithms (dis)agree. METHODS: Optic disc OCT data (Canon OCT-HS100) from 20 healthy subjects and 28 early, 29 moderate, and 23 severe glaucoma patients were assessed with four different algorithms (CANON, IOWA, FWHM, DOCTRAP). We measured retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFLT) a

Investigation of a glottal related harmonics-to-noise ratio and spectral tilt as indicators of glottal noise in synthesized and human voice signals.

The harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) of the voiced speech signal has implicitly been used to infer information regarding the turbulent noise level at the glottis. However, two problems exist for inferring glottal noise attributes from the HNR of the speech wave form: (i) the measure is fundamental frequency (f0) dependent for equal levels of glottal noise, and (ii) any deviation from signal periodicity affects the ratio, not just turbulent noise. An alternative harmonics-to-noise ratio formulation [glottal related HNR (GHNR')] is proposed to overcome the former problem. In GHNR' a mean over the

Development of an Imaging Spectrometer with a High Signal-to-Noise Ratio Based on High Energy Transmission Efficiency for Soil Organic Matter Detection.

Hyperspectral detection of the change rate of organic matter content in agricultural remote sensing requires a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, due to the large number and efficiency limitation of the components, it is difficult to improve the SNR. This study uses high-efficiency convex grating with a diffraction efficiency exceeding 50% across the 360-850 nm range, a back-illuminated Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) detector with a 95% efficiency in peak wavelength, and silver-coated mirrors to develop an imaging spectrometer for detecting soil organic matter (SOM). Metacontrol-related aperiodic and periodic neural activity in cognitive aging: enhancing the neural signal-to-noise ratio through anodal transcranial direct current stimulation.

Metacontrol, the ability to adapt cognitive control to task demands, declines with age and is thought to be reflected in aperiodic and periodic neural dynamics. Given that anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (atDCS) can modulate cortical excitability via membrane potential shifts, we tested whether atDCS alters the neurophysiological signatures of metacontrol in younger and older adults. In a mixed design, younger and older participants performed a Go/Nogo task under both atDCS and sham stimulation conditions; resting-state EEG data were also acquired. Aperiodic activity was analyze

Firing Rate Adaptation of the Human Auditory Nerve Optimizes Neural Signal-to-Noise Ratios.

Several physiological mechanisms act on the response of the auditory nerve (AN) during acoustic stimulation, resulting in an adjustment in auditory gain. These mechanisms include-but are not limited to-firing rate adaptation, dynamic range adaptation, the middle ear muscle reflex, and the medial olivocochlear reflex. A potential role of these mechanisms is to improve the neural signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the output of the AN in real time. This study tested the hypothesis that neural SNRs, inferred from non-invasive assessment of the human AN, improve over the duration of acoustic stimulati

Infants born very preterm react to variations of the acoustic environment in their incubator from a minimum signal-to-noise ratio threshold of 5 to 10 dBA.

INTRODUCTION: Very early preterm infants (VPIs) are exposed to unpredictable noise in neonatal intensive care units. Their ability to perceive moderate acoustic environmental changes has not been fully investigated. RESULTS: Physiological values of the 598 isolated sound peaks (SPs) that were 5-10 and 10-15 dB slow-response A (dBA) above background noise levels and that occurred during infants' sleep varied significantly, indicating that VPIs detect them. Exposure to 10-15 dBA SPs during active sleep significantly increased mean heart rate and decreased mean respiratory rate and mean systemic

Harmonics-to-noise ratio estimation with deterministically time-varying harmonic model for pathological voice signals.

The harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) and other spectral noise parameters are important in clinical objective voice assessment as they could indicate the presence of nonharmonic phenomena, which are tied to the perception of hoarseness or breathiness. Existing HNR estimators are built on the voice signals to be nearly periodic (fixed over a short period), although voice pathology could induce involuntary slow modulation to void this assumption. This paper proposes the use of a deterministically time-varying harmonic model to improve the HNR measurements. To estimate the time-varying model, a two-

The intensitive DL of tones: dependence of signal/masker ratio on tone level and on spectrum of added noise.

In Greenwood [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 33, 484-502 (1961a)] the ratio of masked signal threshold to masker level (S/M) decreased about 4 dB at a masker level of about 50 dB SL, the 'transition' level, when noise bands were subcritical but not when supercritical. Schlauch et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 71, S73 (1982)] report a related result. A pilot study [Greenwood, Harvard Psychoacoustic Lab. Status Report 37, 8-9 (1961)] in which pure tones masked identical tones in-phase showed a larger change in S/M. Detailed tone-tone growth-of-masking curves from over a dozen subjects in 1967-69, and in 1960, a

Detecting Triple-Vessel Disease with Cadmium Zinc Telluride-Based Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography Using the Intensity Signal-to-Noise Ratio between Rest and Stress Studies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if a novel parameter, the stress-to-rest ratio of the signal-to-noise ratio (RSNR) obtained with a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) SPECT scanner, could be used to distinguish triple-vessel disease (TVD) patients. Methods. One hundred and two patients with suspected coronary artery disease were retrospectively involved. Each subject underwent a Tl-201 SPECT scan and subsequent coronary angiography. Subjects were separated into TVD (n = 41) and control (n = 61) groups based on coronary angiography results using 50% as the stenosis cutoff. The RSNR was ca

Comparing anti-drug antibody signal-to-noise ratios to assess immunogenicity and interchangeability in adalimumab biosimilar studies.

BACKGROUND: To support an interchangeability designation for Sandoz adalimumab biosimilar (GP2017), antidrug antibody (ADA) signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios were assessed in the GP2017 ADACCESS trial to directly assess potential changes in immunogenicity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: ADACCESS was a 51-week trial in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis that included patients treated continuously with reference adalimumab (cH), and patients who experienced four switches between reference adalimumab and GP2017 (H2H). ADAs were measured every 6 weeks during the switching phase using an e

Furan-modulated ClO- probe with typical turn-on fluorescence response, high signal-to-noise ratio and reactivity for applications in food samples, test strips, live cells and zebrafish.

As a reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antibacterial agent, hypochlorite (ClO-) is crucial in both food processing and life activities, and ClO- fluorescent probes have been widely proposed in recent years. However, research on further improving their sensing performance is still not comprehensive enough. In this work, by introducing benzene and furan groups with different electronegativity, three aggregation-induced emission (AIE) based ClO- fluorescent probes with CN bond as the reaction site were rationally prepared. After comparative analysis, it was found the furan group with stronger ele

Seasonal and diel variation of hormone metabolites in European stonechats: on the importance of high signal-to-noise ratios in noninvasive hormone studies.

Most vertebrates living in seasonal environments show seasonal reproductive cycles and diel rhythms. The rhythmicity in behavior and morphology is accompanied by diel and seasonal patterns of hormone secretions. In small animals, the investigation of diel patterns of hormones has been hampered because repeated blood sampling is difficult and may influence subsequent measurements. A possibility to avoid these caveats is to investigate excreted hormone metabolites instead. Here, we describe the diel excretion patterns of testosterone and corticosterone metabolites in a small captive songbird dur
