Synergistic effects of calcium silicate/zinc silicate dual compounds andin-situinterconnected pores on promoting bone regeneration of composite scaffolds.

Rapid bone regeneration in implants is important for successful transplantation. In this regard, we report the development of calcium silicate/zinc silicate (CS/ZS) dual-compound-incorporated calcium phosphate cement (CPC) scaffolds with a three-dimensional poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) network that synergistically promote bone regeneration. In vitroresults demonstrated that the incorporation of CS/ZS dual compounds into the CPC significantly promoted the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells compared to the addition of CS or ZS alone. Moreover, the bone-regeneration efficacy of the composi

Enhanced Vascularity in Gelatin Scaffolds via Copper-Doped Magnesium-Calcium Silicates Incorporation: In-Vitro and Ex-Ovo Insights.

Addressing a critical challenge in current tissue-engineering practices, this study aims to enhance vascularization in 3D porous scaffolds by incorporating bioceramics laden with pro-angiogenic ions. Specifically, freeze-dried gelatin-based scaffolds were infused with sol-gel-derived powders of Cu-doped akermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7) and bredigite (Ca7MgSi4O16) at various concentrations (10, 20, and 30 wt%). The scaffolds were initially characterized for their structural integrity, biodegradability, swelling behavior, impact on physiological pH, and cytocompatibility with human umbilical vein endothe

Remineralisation effect of a dual-phase calcium silicate/phosphate gel combined with calcium silicate/phosphate toothpaste on acid-challenged enamel in situ.

OBJECTIVES: To test if a novel dual-phase gel system (calcium silicate and phosphate with 1450 ppmF, as NaF/MFP; TG) combined with a toothpaste (calcium silicate and sodium phosphate with 1450 ppmF, as MFP; TG) was able to re-harden previously acid-challenged enamel to a greater extent than other toothpastes. METHODS: The study consisted of a double-blind, randomised, cross-over design with four 7-day treatment legs. In each leg, subjects wearing a partial denture holding four demineralised enamel specimens (25 min in 0.3% citric acid, pH3.8) used either the test regimen (TG+TP) or one of the

Electrochemically Assisted Calcium Silicate Utilization for Phosphate Recovery.

Electrochemical pH-swing systems have demonstrated significant potential across diverse applications, including chemical production, carbon capture, and water treatment. However, conventional systems predominantly depend on costly ion exchange membranes, which are often plagued by fouling and scaling challenges. Here, we introduce an ingenious electrochemically assisted calcium silicate (EACS) system capable of achieving a rapid pH swing from 8.5 to 10 within 1 h through the in situ utilization of H+ and OH- ions, eliminating the need for membranes. The EACS system incorporates a novel 3D-prin

SO2, silicate clouds, but no CH4 detected in a warm Neptune.

WASP-107b is a warm (approximately 740 K) transiting planet with a Neptune-like mass of roughly 30.5 M⊕ and Jupiter-like radius of about 0.94 RJ (refs. 1,2), whose extended atmosphere is eroding3. Previous observations showed evidence for water vapour and a thick, high-altitude condensate layer in the atmosphere of WASP-107b (refs. 4,5). Recently, photochemically produced sulfur dioxide (SO2) was detected in the atmosphere of a hot (about 1,200 K) Saturn-mass planet from transmission spectroscopy near 4.05 μm (refs. 6,7), but for temperatures below about 1,000 K, sulfur is predicted to prefera

Calcium-phosphorus interactions at a nano-structured silicate surface.

Nano-structured calcium silicate (NCS), a highly porous material synthesized by controlled precipitation from geothermal fluids or sodium silicate solution, was developed as filler for use in paper manufacture. NCS has been shown to chemisorb orthophosphate from an aqueous solution probably obeying a Freundlich isotherm with high selectivity compared to other common environmental anions. Microanalysis of the products of chemisorption indicated there was significant change from the porous and nano-structured morphology of pristine NCS to fibrous and crystalline morphologies and non-porous detri

Bacteria and pulpal reactions under silicate cement restorations.

Silicate cement was inserted in deep unlined cavities in 70 human teeth; 35 cavities were cleaned with an antibacterial cleanser, and the other 35 cavities in the contralateral teeth were treated with water spray only. In all teeth, invasion of bacteria from the tooth surface was prevented with a surface seal. Histologic examinations after 4 weeks revealed bacterial growth on dentinal walls in 9 of the uncleaned and in 2 cleaned cavities. Only in these 11 teeth was an inflammatory reaction seen in the pulp. Under eight cavities without bacterial growth and with silicate cement placed directly

Oxide- and Silicate-Water Interfaces and Their Roles in Technology and the Environment.

Interfacial reactions drive all elemental cycling on Earth and play pivotal roles in human activities such as agriculture, water purification, energy production and storage, environmental contaminant remediation, and nuclear waste repository management. The onset of the 21st century marked the beginning of a more detailed understanding of mineral aqueous interfaces enabled by advances in techniques that use tunable high-flux focused ultrafast laser and X-ray sources to provide near-atomic measurement resolution, as well as by nanofabrication approaches that enable transmission electron microsc

Calcium silicate/bortezomib combinatory therapy for multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematologic malignancy. Bortezomib (BOR), a first-generation proteasome inhibitor, is the basic agent for the treatment of MM and has greatly improved the survival of patients with MM. However, the side effects of BOR (e.g. peripheral neuropathy) occur frequently and almost all MM patients eventually develop resistance to BOR and go on to develop refractory relapsed multiple myeloma (RRMM). Therefore, it is of great significance to find a method to increase the sensitivity of MM to BOR to reduce toxicity and drug resistance. Herein, we found that

Multifocal discrete osteolysis in a horse with silicate associated osteoporosis.

Silicate associated osteoporosis (SAO) was diagnosed post mortem in an adult horse with the shortest documented exposure to cytotoxic silicates of 2 years. The horse was evaluated for a 6-months history of progressive back tenderness and acute onset of lameness. The horse had a marked (4/5) [American Association of Equine Practitioners scale] left forelimb lameness, moderate (2/5) hindlimb ataxia and weakness, and cervical pain upon palpation. Physical examination did not reveal clinical skeletal deformities or respiratory compromise. Radiographs revealed widespread, discrete, sharply delineat

Structural effects of phosphorus inclusion in bioactive silicate glasses.

Molecular dynamics simulations of four bioactive silicate glasses containing between 0 (P0) and 12 (P12) mol % P2O5 have been carried out in order to elucidate the structural role of phosphorus in these materials. In particular, we have focused on structural features which can have a direct role in the bioactive mechanism of dissolution and bone bonding. The higher affinity of modifier Na and Ca cations for coordinating phosphate rather than silicate, together with the formation of P-O-Si linkages, lead to increasing repolymerization of the silicate network with increasing P2O5 content, which

[Death by peroral ingestion of soluble glass (sodium silicate)].

The intake of 0.51 of water glass (sodium metasilicate; colloid pH 12.5) led to death within 1-1.5 h. Autopsy revealed alkali burns of the stomach mucosa. The stomach contained a small amount of liquid with a pH of 11.5. Histologically, numerous bronchioles and alveoles were filled with amorphous material. This material was chemically proved to be condensed water glass. The obstruction of large parts of the lungs by water glass led to an inhibition of alveolar gas diffusion, which may have been the cause of death. The transformation of the water glass from liquid to solid occurred in the lungs

Pulp reactions to silicate cement in teeth with healing pulpitis.

Unlined silicate restorations were placed in intact and experimentally altered monkey, teeth. Pulpitis had been induced experimentally by sealing soft carious human dentin in Class V cavities with amalgam for 7 d. These fillings were then removed and healing allowed by inserting zinc oxide/eugenol cement. A protective effect of the secondary dentin in teeth with healing pulpitis could be demonstrated in short-term experiments. After a 1-month observation period no difference in response to silicate cement could be found between intact and experimentally altered pulps, both groups exhibiting no
