Effect of ultraviolet-protective 2-ethylhexyl salicylate incorporation on the mechanical properties of different maxillofacial silicone elastomers.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Whether the incorporation of ultraviolet-protective 2-ethylhexyl salicylate (UV-ES) affects the mechanical properties of different maxillofacial silicone elastomers, limiting the service life of facial prostheses, is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to examine the mechanical properties of different maxillofacial silicone elastomers incorporating different ratios of UV-ES. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three different ratios of UV-ES were incorporated into 3 different types of maxillofacial silicones (M511, TechSil-25, and A-2000), and the mechanical prop…

Optimization of Candida tropicalis growth conditions on silicone elastomer material by response surface methodology.

Biofilm in the emerging pathogen Candida tropicalis and the most prevalent Non-Albicans Candida infections is linked to fouling of medical devices and virulence. The growth conditions (temperature, media pH, incubation time, inoculum size, and shaker speed) for clinical cultures of C. tropicalis were optimized on silicone elastomer material by Central composite design based on Response surface methodology. Six clinical cultures (C4, U873, U951, U1179, U1309 and U1360) and a standard culture (MTCC-184) were chosen for the study. Growth and biofilm were quantified for all the cultures by crystal

Effect of silicone elastomer contact lens wear on endothelial cell morphology in aphakic eyes.

We prospectively evaluated the effect of extended silicone elastomer contact lens wear on the endothelial mosaic of aphakic subjects. Endothelial cell photography and central corneal thickness measurements were performed on 23 eyes of 15 aphakic subjects (mean age 60 +/- 10 years). These measurements were made before lens wear (n = 23) and were repeated after 1 year (n = 19) and again after 5 years (n = 10) of lens wear. No statistically significant change in mean endothelial cell size or coefficient of variation of cell size was found. Central corneal thickness was significantly decreased at

Percutaneous and surgical placement of fine silicone elastomer central catheters in high-risk newborns.

Percutaneous insertion of fine silicone elastomer catheters (0.6 millimeters outside diameter) have been used for central parenteral nutrition of very low birth weight and other high risk infants. Because peripheral venous access can be limited in the newborn, we report the previously undescribed surgical cannulation of the superficial arm veins with this catheter, and compare our experience with this technique and the percutaneous method in neonates. A central catheter position was attained in 88% of surgical (38 of 43) and 74% of percutaneous (17 of 23) cannulations. The two groups did not d

Effect of 2-ethylhexyl salicylate incorporation on the color stability of different maxillofacial silicone elastomers after outdoor weathering.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Silicone elastomers are considered the most favorable materials for the prosthetic rehabilitation of facial defects. However, color change, because of the ultraviolet (UV) light, limits the life of facial prostheses. The addition of 2-ethylhexyl salicylate as a UV-protective may improve the color stability of different maxillofacial silicone elastomers. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of 2-ethylhexyl salicylate on the color stability of 3 different maxillofacial silicone elastomers after outdoor weathering. Long-term intravenous therapy with use of peripherally inserted silicone-elastomer catheters in orthopaedic patients.

We studied the results of prolonged intravenous therapy with antibiotics through a central venous silicone-elastomer catheter that had been peripherally inserted in thirty-five orthopaedic patients. The catheters remained in place for an average of twenty-nine days (range, five to seventy-four days). The 20-gauge (one-millimeter-diameter) catheters used in our study were smaller in diameter than the triple-lumen catheters or the double-lumen Hickman catheters used in previous studies. The catheters in our study were left indwelling for as long as, or for longer than, those in other studies. Ou

Aesthetic rehabilitation of amputated phalanx by three part mould technique using silicone elastomer - case report.

The unfortunate loss of all or part of a finger caused by traumatic amputation has a negative impact on physical and psychological well-being of a person. Thus an aesthetic prosthesis can offer psychological, functional and rehabilitative advantages. One of the major problems with the prosthetic replacement of a partially amputated finger is inadequate retention of the prosthesis and there are numerous means to enhance the retention. The most routinely used are adhesives, adhesive tape, magnets and implants. The present article describes a technique which utilizes room temperature vulcanizing

A review of the biologic effects, clinical efficacy, and safety of silicone elastomer sheeting for hypertrophic and keloid scar treatment and management.

Silicone elastomer sheeting is a medical device used to prevent the development of and improve the appearance and feel of hypertrophic and keloid scars. The precise mechanism of action of silicone elastomer sheeting has not been defined, but clinical trials report that this device is safe and effective for the treatment and prevention of hypertrophic and keloid scars if worn over the scar for 12 to 24 hours per day for at least 2 to 3 months. Some of the silicone elastomer sheeting products currently on the market are durable and adhere well to the skin. These products are an attractive treatm

Immunotoxicity of 180 day exposure to polydimethylsiloxane (silicone) fluid, gel and elastomer and polyurethane disks in female B6C3F1 mice.

Millions of people have been exposed to silicones which are present in consumer goods such as cosmetics and toiletries, processed foods and household products. In addition, silicones have been used extensively in medical practice as a lubricant in tubing and syringes, and as implantable devices. A silicone widely used in medical practice is polydimethylsiloxane. This study was undertaken to determine the immunotoxicologic potential of long term exposure to the principal constituents of breast implants: silicone fluid, silicone gel and silicone elastomer. An alternative covering for devices con

Silicone elastomer lens wear induces less overnight corneal edema than sleep without lens wear.

Corneal thickness was measured on awakening in both eyes of ten subjects who slept with a silicone elastomer lens in one eye only. The mean corneal edema level with the silicone lens after eight hours of sleep was 2.0 +/- 2.0% and was significantly lower (p less than 0.01) than the level in the eye that did not wear a lens (3.6 +/- 2.1%). This indicates that the oxygen level supplied to the anterior cornea during sleep with silicone elastomer lenses is higher than without a lens. We hypothesize that the lower overnight swelling with the silicone lenses is a result of reduced resistance to oxyg

A simple silicone elastomer colonization model highlights complexities of Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus interactions in biofilm formation.

Introduction. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) significantly contribute to the burden of antimicrobial resistance. A major factor in HAIs is the colonization of indwelling medical devices by biofilm-forming opportunistic pathogens such as Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. These organisms frequently co-infect, resulting in synergistic interactions with enhanced virulence and resistance to treatment.Hypothesis/Gap statement. C. albicans and S. aureus readily form dual-species biofilms on silicone elastomers, a commonly used medical device material, yet the colonization phenotype…

Effect of manufacturing and experimental conditions on the mechanical and surface properties of silicone elastomer scaffolds used in endothelial mechanobiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Mechanobiological studies allow the characterization of cell response to mechanical stresses. Cells need to be supported by a material with properties similar to the physiological environment. Silicone elastomers have been used to produce various in vitro scaffolds of different geometries for endothelial cell studies given its relevant mechanical, optical and surface properties. However, obtaining defined and repeatable properties is a challenge as depending on the different manufacturing and processing steps, mechanical and surface properties may vary significantly between researc…

Vacuum arc plasma deposition of thin titanium dioxide films on silicone elastomer as a functional coating for medical applications.

Silicone elastomer is a promising material for medical applications and is widely used for implants with blood and tissue contact. However, its strong hydrophobicity limits adhesion of tissue cells to silicone surfaces, which can impair the healing process. To improve the biological properties of silicone, a triggerless pulsed vacuum cathodic arc plasma deposition technique was applied to deposit titanium dioxide (TiO2) films onto the surface. Scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and contact angle measurements were used for
